My gym is moving next week about 10 miles closer to me and I'm so excited to have a shorter trip. I think I'll be able to attend class much more regularly and often. Also we will finally actually legit jiu-jitsu mats not crossfit/wrestling puzzle piece style mats.

I had that happen just a couple months ago! It's really not pleasant. It hurt way worse than actually just breaking a rib without injuring the cartilege around it as much. I also finally saw a specialist about my neck injury. Turns out it really was fractured cartilege on my throat. Recovery time 6-10 weeks before it's healed (so only another 1-5 weeks ). Up to 6 months until the discomfort goes away. But they did say I could get choked again in a couple weeks without risking it getting more damaged. Also yesterday I almost tapped my first purple belt. It was the very end of the roll after he had already tapped me like 6 times. He tried to do the move from the class (a sweep from open guard) but was sitting too upright and I locked in a really tight guillotine and rolled with him and ended up with him on top but the choke still locked in. Then the round timer went off a few seconds later. He said it was probably going to get him if the bell hadn't sounded. Not sure if he was being nice or if I actually had him there but I'd like to think I was doing something right.

I've done poo poo like that 5 times at different levels of severity - two tears and three kinda-break-kinda separation things, most recently March 20-something. Anyone have any good counter-defense tips for guillotines? I'm quite good at getting the head wrap, and extremely effective at finishing (Marcello and/or Karel Pravek style) if I get the proper leg position, but often enough I get the head wrapped and fail to get the legs into place and my opponents manage to get cross body, or at least enough in a favourable direction that they can hand fight and work their way out. None of my instructors or mentors are really guillotine guys. I feel as if prioritizing the over-the-back leg (once I have the neck) and fighting for the knee shield might work, but it seems like it's a system with more moving parts. Any ideas or suggestions?

The new Lachlan Giles DVD is what you’re after. His solutions to people going cross-body before his legs are in position are: Arm-out guillotine: Switch to a Marcelotine with the high elbow on the side they’re passing to, using it as a block to keep them in place until you get the tap: Arm-in guillotine: He clamps his seatbelt-or-whatever you’d call it tightly and sweeps them over into inverted north south (the anaconda finishing position where you’re face up) In both cases they’re fast and reactive, happening during the transition, because you’re hosed if they finish the pass. He prioritizes the bottom leg over the top leg, btw. 02-6611-0142-1 fucked around with this message at 02:55 on Jun 30, 2018 |

It's the most well-organized DVD I've seen, I think, it designed to be used as a troubleshooting reference. I think if it hadn't been released at the same time as Danaher's DVD it would've received a lot more attention. 02-6611-0142-1 fucked around with this message at 05:10 on Jun 30, 2018 |

Well I feel dumb. Ordered a gi off Amazon from Fuji that was on sale (im a bit too big for the stores in Seoul so I have to get stuff sent from the US) and its for an even bigger person. Its a judo gi and their size chart said my dimensions are a 5 but this feels like I'd be a 4 given how much bigger the gi fits. Hope I can either get it to shrink in the wash or a tailor an hem it a bit. Maybe worst case I can pick a gi up in Japan when I go in September. I'm asking because I've become the double-weave haberdasher in my neck of the woods. Also the basic quick check for judo gi sizing is to relax your arms to the sides, bend your wrists so your palms are parallel to the ground, and then swing your arms up in front of you til theyh're level. When you do that the gi should come up to the knob on your wrist. It could just be that you have a gi that fits properly, and you're just not used to judo fit.

Hot/hang will do a bit more. Where/how does it not fit? How far off is it? I'm 5'8" 155 and size 4s can be too small for me if they shrink. I typically order 4s or 4.5s for myself. I 100% would have ordered a 5 for someone your size. I'm wondering if it's mislablled.

I did the arm trick you suggested and it stays past the bulge of my wrist by about a quarter to a half inch. Then there's just a lot of looseness around my upper body. If I wear it, there's maybe 2 to 3 inches it hands from my arm if i hold it out. The pants also have to be pulled up to past my navel for them to not be dragging on the ground. I don't doubt Fuji makes great gis, this definitely seems like its well made but maybe it was mislabeled but I haven't ever had Fuji send me the wrong size when I got other gear off them. I'll try washing it this week and see if i can get it to shrink some. On the plus side the belt that came in the pack fits me, so I at least have a spare belt to use if my other one doesn't dry fast enough in a day.

Well remember that judo gis fit a lot bigger and looser than BJJ gis. Is it possible that it was not the fit you were expecting? I can see someone who is used to BJJ fit feeling as if a judo gi is a circus tent (just as people who are used to karate/tkd gis feel as if a judo or BJJ gi is made out of cardboard). For reference here's Travis Stevens in a blue judo gi vs a blue BJJ gi The BJJ gi has way less loose space around the wrists and chest, and the gi tail is quite a bit shorter.

Yeah a 5 ought to be pretty close for you. I'm 5'11" 180lbs and although I usually buy fuji 4s, they eventually shrink too far for high-level competition (no one gives a poo poo at practice/local tournaments.) A hot wash and dry might shrink the sleeves up to 1-2 inches so you should be good to go. Judo gis are also designed to look/feel unflattering on everyone.

You probably can't get away with a bjj gi in any judo competition. For the reason you just mentioned. Tighter, shorter sleeves are tougher to grab on to. The rules for competition judo gi fitment are actually very specific. What most referees will be looking for is basically sleeves that end near the wrist bone and are wide enough to fit four fingers inside. Similar for the pants.

I've actually seen competitors removed from the mats at local/regional judo tournaments for having a too-small gi. As refs we're usually instructed to just give it an eye test and be pretty forgiving before walking over and inspecting, but people still show up with poo poo that's obviously a size too small. Typically what happens is they're told that they have 4 minutes (one match length) to go find a proper one or they're DQed. At competitive stream tournaments you need to show up with two IJF approved gis (white and blue), and if you walk onto the mat with one that isn't approved and properly fitting, you're instantly DQed.
