Others can get lost in the lyrics themselves and completely forget about the surrounding music, and have no idea even what instruments are played (is there a piano? no idea! -- my dad sometimes) Most people are somewhere in between though, and it can change.. some times you might be more about lyrics but then later more about music. the change might come (and come back) over days or months or years or never. I sometimes listen to music in languages i dont understand so i can feel that one feeling, its interesting, try it! Is this surprising to you?

A bit yes. I am aware there is a lot of music without anyone singing but I just can't fathom listening to say, a classic rock radio station and not understanding the lyrics.

(Lead singer of Toad the Wet Sprocket; at this point almost as well known for supporting RAINN as for making music).

That's basically my entire childhood. Hell, there's jokes about how a lot of super famous songs most of their fans will admit they have no idea what the lyrics are. I used to think 'Ego' was 'Eagle'. It improves the song imo.
