Can we talk about VHS for a minute? I bought two boxes of random tapes today. It’s wrestling, tv recordings of movies, Ninja Turtles and other random stuff. I love sorting through the mystery tapes. You never know what you’ll find! I got Problem Child 2 and poker on one!

Pretty sure there was something about the 2D disc of the 3D re-release having a new master. 88 Films has announced Simon Wincer's Harlequin for later this year, and are releasing Body Melt (as are Vinegar Syndrome). Body Melt has a new transfer according to VS, and apparently Umbrella in Australia has a new edition coming out around the same time (only a year and a bit after the last release...) but no word on a new transfer.

Mine's mostly TV recordings too, lots of weirdo sci-fi and cult horror movies. The guy I got them from was selling them as blanks, but he had really great taste. Even a handful of tapes with horror hosts, too. And there's a bunch of weird old porn in there. But it really is a massive treasure trove of amazing sounding stuff. I haven't even heard of 3/4 of it, but seeing how the guy called it "psychotronic" content in the auction, it looks like he's a real-deal cult cinema dude from back in the day, as he clearly got the word from the Psychotronic Video. It's really interesting watching these with no control over what's coming up next or the ability to change the channel. It's like watching antenna TV in my friend's basement when I was a kid. One channel and that's it. Incredibly nostalgic. And those commercials, man, it's like time travel. Almost Blue posted:I'd say the aforementioned Night of the Living Dead is an example. If this video is accurate Jurassic Park was futzed with in some scenes. Arguably, Blade Runner Final Cut. I heard the Lord of the Rings movies were made more green, but I haven't seen it on blu ray. Exactly what I was looking for, thanks. It's really interesting to see the difference in taste, there. I feel like I'm torn on every other scene. The original is how it looks in my mind (and on my earlier Blu) but there is something very attractive about some of the scenes from the re-grade. Been going through the tapes, having a laugh, but one of them broke. I think the actual tape stock broke in half. And it was on the WWF Half Time Heat empty arena match. Is there any way to fix this tape so I can watch it and possibly archive it?

I was watching Prince of Space on MST3K. And there's a few times where someone is talking and they aren't on screen, and so the bots are confused and are like "who's talking?" I feel like future generations won't get that joke and not realize that there film wasn't shot with invisible people, it's just that sometimes, when they panned and scanned films, they only used the center of the frame.

But try to use splicing tape and not scotch tape if you can.

My friend is one such person and he's spent thousands of dollars on old video tapes from some guy in Lebanon. The movies are usually just bland Indian and Pakistani dramas, with occasional action and horror films, but having watched many of them the movies are rarely anything interesting and are just 98% filler with a couple of good scenes. Also none of these movies are subtitled.

My prized VHS possession was an ex-rental Aus/NZ copy of Freddy's Dead with a puffy white cover (like a puffy sticker material, but a whole cover) that has a cutaway to art underneath. I can't find it now, and there's seemingly no evidence online that it ever existed. I might have been imagining it, but looking around on Google Image Search I was reminded of what our Dream Warriors tape looked like.  gently caress poster art. Impact font and orange! Watching a ton of old films from various special effects heavy genres(sci-fi, horror, big historical epics, etc.) I think does help a person appreciate each era for what it was and the new things it brought to the table. Like, when I watched Gone With the Wind the other day, you can appreciate the scale of everything a lot more if you have seen other films from that time and know just how above and beyond the production was compared to almost anything else people had experienced at the time.

To be honest, movies like Superman would be best served by high bitrate, 4K scanned regular Blu-rays. The upscale would help soften the image a bit. I mean, I doubt even original prints were high-res enough to be close to 4K.Trump posted:Sure those aren't just anamorphic prints? They're clearly spherical prints.
