Yeah he's taken a lot of damage in his career. The JDS fight was nuts and he got dropped by Overeem. There is a reason why it's hard to defend the heavyweight title everybody hits hard.

Doesn't have to be a hard punch to knock you out, it has to be a good punch in the right spot. That's enough to explain why DC put Stipe away when bonafide power strikers couldn't.

With a 72 inch reach against an 80 inch reach DC was consistently popping Stipes head back with jabs and I'm still not sure how he does it.

He's one of the few fighters that seems to know exactly how to neutralize massive reach advantages.

The most impressive part about DC's win is that they watched tape and knew that Stipe keeps his hands down while breaking from the clinch.

The way DC gives up the neck collar in the clinch to give Stipe the exit out of the clinch only to set up the KO is something I imagine a lot of fighters will try to mimic.

His arms were extended way out, making it seem like he didn't have much more range when he some how did, and he managed to keep a low/medium distance.

I noticed DC kind of kept his arms extended when fighting Jones and Miocic... I guess to force them to throw strikes through his arms and tangle them up? Is that like a common thing people do with a reach disadvantage? I thought you were supposed to keep your poo poo tight

I noticed that he seemed real lax in keeping the arms up in a protective manner, though I will admit it probably only stood out so much in comparison to the last fight where both competitors did little but keep their hands up.

DC vs Lesnar is awesome. It’s a circus fight. It’s a legitimate fight. It’s a dumb wwe levels of hype fight.

Dude is 0-2-1 in his last 3 fights. There's no way in hell it's in any way a meritorious title fight. OTOH, DC deserves the payday heading into retirement, so whatever.

I feel you but who deserves it more? Blaydes? Lewis? There are plenty of talented guys but no one really at the top. I’m down with DC defending the lw strap, then fighting Lesnar, and in the meantime hopefully a top contender will show up.

Volkov just neutralized Werdum on the ground and then knocked him the gently caress out. I’d say that was title shot-worthy. Although it happened on a Fight Pass card no watched.

Don't they want the fight for November's MSG show? I don't think it's wise to have DC do another fight within the next 3 months even if he didn't hurt his hand beating up Stipe so bad

Nah. When you look at raw examples like Vitor and Johny, you realise that steroids have a profound impact on your ability to compete at fighting. Like, a staggering amount. They went from champion / knocking out champions to washing out of the big leagues as quick as the fight bookings / value to the UFC brand allowed. Jon Jones was absolutely a once in a lifetime talent - on steroids.

If you have a taller opponent and you're expecting a punch, having your arms out not only helps tie up incoming shots, but its also give you some counterweight to shift your weight away from. Having a loose guard and extending your arms toward the strikes gives your torso and head more acceleration away from the strikes. Keeping your guard tight to your chin means your core has to do all the work and move more weight.

The downside of course is if the strike is coming from below instead of above.

Yeah, I'd think blaydes is probably the most deserving at this point. DC mentioned on the post fight show he wanted to defend the lhw belt and then fight Brock since Lesnar will have to be in the usada pool for 6 months or whatever, so it'll be a bit before they could even fight, so it looks like that's the way its gonna go.

Werdum was really hard to finish as well, at one point. You have to have a decent chin to fight at heavyweight at all, and when it goes, it goes loving bad

The mummy guard doesn't involve moving your head or torso off-line. It's minimal movement aimed at pressuring the opponent, pawing your forearms in front to or deflect shots as you shuffle into range.

Volkov weighed in for this card as their back up if disaster struck the main event, so they ranked him highly enough for that. I'm guessing they have him and Blaydes fight for #1 contender after the Lesnar business is concluded.
