IIRC, the science says that art can’t encourage specific behaviour (so playing TF2 won’t make you blow off your own feet with a bazooka), but it can influence your worldview (so it may well help you think of Germans as psychotic mad scientists and Russians as big, violent, and none too bright, and make you slightly more open to the idea of solving problems through violence). Which isn’t really all that surprising when you think about it - how many cultural mores and perspectives on the world did you pick up from the entertainment you consume?

Which still boils down to 'We have zero actual proof of any effect, but I dunno, maaaaybe...' Not exactly grounds for a moral crusade.

Yeah, no. There’s an entire field of research on the cultural impact of art, advertising and propaganda are gigantic, influential industries, and we have dramatic, well-documented examples of the power of individual artworks like the resurrection and destruction of the Ku Klux Klan through Birth of a Nation and Superman. It may sometimes be slight, but it absolutely exists. Seriously, ‘all art conveys a message’ is one of the most basic things you’ll learn when studying English literature (or equivalent courses), and it’s frankly pretty dumb to suggest that no sufficiently eloquent message has ever persuaded someone of something.

That is nothing new, a lot of parasitic wasps have huge stingers they use to inject eggs into other invertebrates. They usually don't bother with people, not even if you're eating ice cream or whatever like more common wasps do.

It sounds like either an interracial porn involving a Mexican and a petite white housewife, or something you pay a furry artist on DeviantArt to draw.

It’s a cute narrative but is it true?

And to the extent Superman can be credited, it’s not because Superman said the KKK was bad and kids listened.

Superman comics were a vehicle to expose the KKK’s goofy rituals as, well, goofy. Take the Klan out of the shadows and it’s just a bunch of losers in bed sheets.

I got a bunch of cicada hawks in and around my house a few years ago and after I got over the initial “holy gently caress that’s a huge wasp” response I realized they’re actually really cool. :3:

It’s bizarre and kinda great how the giant specialist wasp species are somehow completely chill around people or anything that isn’t their prey.
