A mobster with a rat, eh? Now that brings up some old memories... Shortly after I'd been made, still in the honeymoon all newly minted mobsters experience, I was called in to a meeting with the local boss. In the room with her was a tall, fidgety man who introduced himself as Ateppo the Rat. A most unusual name for one in our business, I'd remarked, and he had laughed, and so did the boss. "I'm not really the rat," he told me, and patted his coat pocket. "Lefty's the real rat here, but lucky for us I'm around to keep an eye on him, make sure he doesn't talk too much." Ateppo and I were to be business partners in a new operation, him managing the front half and me the back, and in the course of our association I came to know him and his rodent companion quite well. Ateppo was a man of many talents, but he had a special gift for enforcement. A creative, you might say. He developed quite a reputation for it among the shopkeepers in his territory. I only witnessed his work personally a few times myself, but what I saw was enough to make a lifelong impression. He had a favorite routine for new clients. He'd walk into a shop just before closing hours. I'm here to collect, he'd say by way of introduction. You may have heard of me. Do you know who I am? They would shake their head no. Ask about me, he'd say. I'll come back at the end of the week, and if you don't greet me by name then there'll be problems, whether you got the money or not. A week later he'd return. Good to see you, old chum! he'd say this time. Hope you had a good week. Business treating you good, and all that. You remember me, don't you? By now the shopkeeper would have asked his neighbors about the lanky fellow with the twitch, the one that visited late. And they would turn pale, and tell him to greet him as Ateppo and treat him with the utmost respect, and have the payment ready to go with the greeting. And usually the shopkeeper would follow this advice. If they were smart. Greetings, Ateppo, they would say. So good to see you! I've been waiting all week. Here is your sum of money, as requested. And Ateppo would smile and leave. I was with Ateppo for one of the exceptions. A tanner new to town had opened up shop, and within no time had gotten deep into the local gambling ring. He was a portly man and carried himself like an aristocrat. The man scowled when Ateppo entered his shop, and scowled further at Ateppo's exuberant introduction. "Of course I remember you, how could I not?" the man sneered. "You're the two-bit crook who came to shake me down. I asked about you, and was told nothing good. I don't have your money, nor will you get any pleasantries from me, Ateppo the Rat." The change in my partner's demeanor was immediate and alarming. His usual exaggerated good cheer evaporated instantly, replaced with an icy stillness. Gone was his twitch. "What did you just call me?" he said softly, and it was as if all the noise in the city had retreated in fear. The merchant seemed not to notice. "Ateppo the Rat, I said. That is your name, is it not? It is certainly what my fellows called you.'" Somehow without moving Ateppo was now looming over the shopkeeper. He was a tall man, but now he seemed taller, as if he had been slouching in all the months I had known him. He said nothing, just waited until the first crack in the merchant's demeanor, a flicker of the eyes toward the door and back. Then he spoke, in the same soft voice. "I'm not a rat. I've never been a rat. You haven't met the rat. Would you like to meet the rat?" "N... no," the man said, breaking out into a sweat. The room reeked of freshly cured leather, but I swear to this day that suddenly the very odor of the room was overpowered by a heavy musk. If fear has a scent, I experienced it in that moment. "This is the rat," Ateppo said, and reached into his coat pocket. "This is Lefty. Lefty the rat." Quick as a whip he pulled his hand out and flung a furry lump at the merchant's face. The man screamed first in shock, and then in pain, as the agitated animal clutched at his face, scratching and biting and gnawing. The merchant frantically clutched at the savage animal and Ateppo suddenly laughed, shedding the icy countenance as quickly as he put it on, back to his cheery self. He watched the merchant struggle with his frantic pet for a few minutes, a huge grin on his face, then tapped the rodent on the back. The rat calmed at once and Ateppo picked it up, feeding it a piece of cheese he'd kept in his other pocket before returning the rat to his coat. The merchant's face was ravaged and covered in blood. The man would lose at least one eye, and indeed would be lucky to keep the other one. Ateppo looked down at the maimed figure and laughed again. "Glad that's cleared up," he said. "I'm not the rat. Lefty's the rat. I'm Ateppo. You got it?" He gave the man a kick in the gut. "Next time you'll remember. I'll be back in a week for my money. Make sure you have something for Lefty too. He'll be hungry the next time we meet. I'm sure you'll find something for him to chew on." And with that Ateppo turned away and we walked out of the shop. We worked together for some few months after that, him at the front end of our business and me at the back and glad of the separation. Then one day the boss called me in and a new partner was waiting for me. I never saw Ateppo again, and the boss wouldn't tell me what happened to him, but eventually I got some of the details out. Ateppo had been telling the truth all along; he wasn't the rat, but his pet Lefty had done enough informing for the pair of them, thanks to an eavesdropping enchantment provided to him by Gen X. They had enough to indict a few of the lower level bosses and lieutenants, and for a while I feared they would come after me, but perhaps they decided I wasn't a big enough fish, or perhaps Ateppo had spared me his pet's attention. Whatever the case, the experience taught me to be a lot more careful with what I said around others in the business, and fostered within me a deep distrust for those who consorted with rats.

I “vanished” due to time zones, but I forgive jumping to that conclusion in the circumstances. My defence/outrage over the MMT case has been greatly exaggerated, I didn’t like it because it was an extremely meta case, based on literally zero content, that Max tried to both hard sell and soft sell afterwards, which to me made it come across as a disingenuous read. “Proving” that I’ve been playing mafia properly the whole time is something I can’t do at this point, but push comes to shove I can reveal day 2. Ehhhhh not really in the way I was describing them as scummy but if you want to call me scum for running the game you're entitled to that opinion but please don't for either of the reasons I gave about others since I don't think they apply at all. Passive play was specifically asking for others to challenge them. The whole point of a not-playing then playing thing would have been a scum tell if it occurred like over some period of time after others were playing and scum would feel uncomfortable not participating if a lot of other people were. Again, nobody even fit this pattern so its totally moot but that was what my thought process was. And again, I did not run this game as a scum hunting tool, or even have my two scum indicators in mind when I started the game. I just wanted to cut through the boredom of D1 and that cool flavor picture made me want to do something. It was only after I starting thinking a little more about it as people were playing that those two scenarios emerged in my mind of things that might be scummy and then I looked back through the play histories at that point to see if anyone fit the bill.
