And now I'm salty that they wasted Power and Glory as quickly as they did. They had that really neat span of time where they crushed the Rockers (something that never happened), and then the next moment the Road Warriors are squashing them flat

I mentioned earlier in the thread how Paul Roma killed his WCW career by no-selling hot new star Alex Wright and being an outright dick. Turns out that Hercules truly was his drift compatible partner because Herc's final WWF days had the same sense of, "Man, gently caress this poo poo."

There's an MSG show where Herc takes on Sid Justice and gets squashed within seconds. After taking the powerbomb and getting pinned, Herc straight-up stops selling the move by walking to the back all pissed off. He wrestled one more house show match the next day and that was it for him.

Though the WWE didn't/wouldn't mention it, part of the Flair fun is how many of the guys he'd feuded with in the territories.

He'd had major feuds with Von Erich, Valentine, Piper, Snuka and Sheiky and faced most of everyone else in an NWA title match.

Rarity posted:

Addendum: I just need to jump in here for a moment because we've got a few more goodbyes to get through. Let's start things off with the Texas Tornado who's hanging up his prosthetic leg. To be honest, I think Kerry turned out to be a bit of a dud. When you look at this era the list of Intercontinental champions is just name after name of success stories. Savage, Steamboat, Warrior, Hennig, Bret and hell even Honky's run was memorable. Kerry is the only blip on the register. He didn't do anything as champion and as soon as he dropped the belt he disappeared. The truth is that him going isn't really going to be noticeable. And then we're also saying farewell to the Warlord which again isn't that big a deal. Ever since the Powers of Pain broke up he's been floating around doing nothing and he was never a good worker so I don't mind this one at all.

I was looking up some 1992 Kerry Von Erich matches, seeing if the end of his WWF run coincided with his personal issues.

Though Von Erich doesn't appear on any further PPVs, I'll spoiler the remainder.

Though he continued to work for the company, there's a quote from an old Meltzer/Observer article that Fritz Von Erich called the WWF about Kerry's drug issues in early 1992. The WWF sent him to rehab and brought him back, but according to Meltzer, everyone knew that it wasn't going to last. Von Erich was released in August. Personal and legal issues then caught up with him and as we all know, it wasn't pretty.

Rumble 92 is the first real moment of Hogan backlash on a major PPV at the end and the funny thing is the finish probably had a tonne of Hogan input so he could still seem like the guy. It just didn't work this time cause Flair put in an effort not really seen in a WWE/F to that time and ended up getting a face pop. Also Sid was super over and the crowd turned on Hogan for trying to rob Sid.

Something to note is that of the six-man tag match that opened up Summerslam 1991, the only guy who hasn't peaced out around this time is the British Bulldog. Steamboat, Tornado, Warlord, Roma and Fat Herc are gone.

I don't hold a high opinion of WrestleMania 8, but I feel that it's going to make for a really fun show for this thread.

The fact he thought he could do it after Ric Flair went an hour in a rumble fighting off all comers and still be over was also crazy but Hogan's one big flaw as a draw was he just refused to change his act at all. It's just it's finally starting to catch up to him with the first real audible crowd turn...and Attendance starting to noticeably go down for the first time for a top run for Hogan.

Hogan's one major weakness as a draw was that he often burn out a town if he worked there too often. Even during his peak drawing period if he a ran a town too often attendance started to go down. Now with WWF going national that wasn't an issue and Hogan's charisma meant that even if he was an rear end he just got super over and drew so well it didn't matter, but Hogan never fixed that weakness during his first WWF run and it finally caught up to him at the end of the Rumble. I also think Hogan really doubt Flair's ability to connect with a crowd thinking that just doing his usual Hogan stuff would be enough to steal the heat and that was a 100% bad call on the WWF's part.

Really the whole Hogan/Flair stuff up to this point in the WWF is just so weird and the fact Vince couldn't make it a money feud is both a indictment of Vince and also Hogan WCW made way more money off it's Hogan vs Flair

Wrestlemania VIII: Earthquake Is A Face Now And I Don't Know How To Deal With That

What I Think I Know

  • Somehow despite Flair coming away from the Rumble with the top belt this show is main evented by Hulk/Sid. I have no idea how this happens.
  • In one of my random Googling mishaps I found out that the IC title match is Bret/Piper so that could be interesting
  • Taker wins
  • I'm assuming we get wrap-ups for Jake/Savage and Disasters/LOD and maybe Shawn/Marty as well but besides that it's an open card, everything looks like fair game

It's April 1991, little Rarity is sick because she ate all her Easter chocolate in a day and across the Atlantic it's once again time for our annual wrestling extravaganza, it's Wrestlemania VIII! We kick-off the long awaited return of the shouty Vince McMahon intro as he talks us through our two main matchesand it looks like I've got my wires crossed somewhere cause things aren't as I expected. So Hulk will be facing Sid but he doesn't have the title but he might have his career on the line instead? I'm not sure, Vince could be clearer about this part. Of course this means that Flair still has the title and he's going to be defending against Savage. All of which means we get the joys Hulk screwing Savage out of the main event spot for the second year in a row. Hurray.

We are live from the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis, IN with our commentary provided by Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan, who is looking around the stands for pin-up photos of Elizabeth that Flair has promised to put up tonight. This may well be the first documented case of revenge porn. As it is Wrestlemania we must pause to honour the old ways as we get a performance of America the Beautiful by Reba McEntire. She's a country star so big that even I recognise her name so this looks like a decent get for Vince here. However, it seems he's still paying off the rental for the flags from last year's show because Reba's performance is very understated. We don't even get an inspiring, patriotic montage! Which means that this performance ends up not being an embarrassment and thus instantly into the top tier of Wrestlemania vocal performances.

With the performance all wrapped up we're ready for our first match and inoffensive salsa trumpets announce the entrance of El Matador. Heenan instantly claims that Reba is Tito's sister because she's “Arriba McEntire” which is pretty awful but there's so much horrendous poo poo coming out of people's mouths tonight that this barely moves the register. Tito takes the time to give Reba a bow before giving his cape a twirl in the ring and then...

OH!

OH, SHAWN!

Oh gently caress, oh god yes, oh yes this is the real loving deal right here it's Shawn Michaels and he's the Heartbreak Kid and he's already got Sherri with him and oh my god yes please. Oh my god this is literally the best thing. Shawn's strutting his way down to the ring and he's totally up himself and Sherri's there and this looks so perfect. Like, this is everything. This is already the HBK character all together in one package and it all immediately works. Just one look at him and you know he's going to be a big deal. And Sherri is just the perfect character for him to play off of as well, she's batshit and wild and non-conformist in the same way Shawn is so I can already see how this works. And of course it would be remiss for me to ignore the debut of third great entrance theme of the era as we get the introduction of 'Sexy Boy'. It's one of the most recognisable wrestling themes in the world and this version sung by Sherri is a great rendition. It's one of those themes that instantly sells the gimmick.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJKZNVShrtM

El Matador vs. Shawn Michaels w/ Sensational Sherri

Right, I could gush about Shawn and Sherri all night long but I should probably move on to talking about the match. ...Ok, maybe just a little bit more. Shawn's wearing a coat that says 'I'm too sexy for this crowd' on the back which just amazing. Anyone who takes a line out of Right Said Fred's book is fine with me. And this switch has done wonders for Sherri as well because she looks loving amazing tonight. drat. Meanwhile, there's still a whole bunch of empty seats in the arena with Gino and Heenan desperately scramble to cover for. Heenan calls the fans stupid for forgetting to move their alarm back an hour earlier. Boy, some poor ticket usher is getting fired tonight.

Before the match begins Sherri gives Shawn a smooch on the cheek. Aww, they're a couple! I never realised this! Aw, now that's just adorable. We get off to a fast start as Tito connects with a crossbody but then immediately slows it down with a headlock. I've never seen the pace of a match die so fast before. Shawn breaks out but eats a clothesline that knocks him out of the ring and Sherri comes over to help him and... Man, I don't really want to do this this time. This version of Sherri is awesome and I love her to pieces but geez, I can't steer away from this.

Ok, this is something we just need to confront head on. Because yes, Sherri looks gorgeous tonight without a doubt but at the same time her outfit is a hot mess. I don't even know how to begin to describe the top she's wearing which is like a v-neck croptop with bunched up shoulder and long sleeves. Then there's a white cinched and ruffled miniskirt, white tights and white fringed knee-high boots which would each be ok on their own but none of it works when combined together. But this is mostly about that top though. That hideous, hideous top.

Also, this is one of the few pics I grabbed which don't show her panties

Now unfortunately for being our first solo Shawn experience is not great. It's all just brawling and Tito doing headlocks. While Shawn is tied up in the ...third? ...fourth? one of these Gino claims that he's never seen anyone get pinned with a headlock. This leads Heenan to instantly jump in and claim that he's done it. In fact he even “had a guy give up one time during instructions”. Guys, I've just figured it out. Heenan is a topper. By which I mean he's one of those guys who hears a cool story and immediately has to jump in talking about going one better. Smart heeling there because those guys are jerks.

Out of nowhere Shawn reminds us this is a wrestling match when he hits a backbreaker. ...And then he transitions into a headlock. Really? I get he's probably trying to cut down on the flashy moves now he's a heel but this is a bit much. Tito creates some separation but Shawn nails him with a superkick! Gino calls it a “reverse crescent kick” but we know the truth, don't we friends? Tito replies with the Flying Forearm and a beautiful slingshot shoulder tackle. The action's finally starting to pick up. Shawn gives a huge sell for a Manhattan drop then Tito connects with El Paso Del Monte, which sends him rolling out of the ring. When he gets back on the apron Tito grabs him and goes for a body slam but Shawn grabs the top rope and falls on top him and... wins? Clean? I think? I've got no idea what the ending was meant to be.

This was a disappointing first match to kick off Shawn's solo run but I'm willing to overlook it just because of how drat hype I am to see Shawn and Sherri in action which meant I still quite enjoyed watching this. I know I've already gone on for ages about how brilliant this act looks right out the gates but I can't stop myself. This combination just has the X factor, even in a bland jobber match they stand out as something special. The best part about all this is that it's only getting better from here. I think I've finally found something that can fill the void left in my heart by Rick Rude's departure. And you guys know that I wouldn't say that lightly. Also, I need to reiterate how goddam cute Sherri looked here. She's always been beautiful but she was like next level here.

Just adding another pic of Shawn and Sherri together because I can

Addendum: The eagle-eyed among you may have spotted that this match wasn't Shawn against his former tag team buddy Marty Jannetty and it turns out there's a bit of a story to that one. Apparently Marty has managed to pull off the biggest Marty ever and Martied himself all the way out of a job. That's right, Marty was caught by a cop while high as a kite on coke and got done for that and resisting arrest so now he has been well and truly shitcanned. I think he may not be completely done with this thread yet but I'm not 100% sure and even if he's back next show I still wanted to acknowledge this because god drat, Marty. Quit being a Marty.

But that's not all! This is also the last time that we're going to be seeing Tito. After a strong seven year run that included both IC and Tag Team title reigns he's going to be calling it a day so he can never have to dress like a bullfighter again. All of which means we're saying goodbye to one of the few guys left to have been a mainstay throughout this thread. In fact, the only other dudes to have been here week in, week out since WM1 are Hulk Hogan and Greg Valentine. Because apparently wrestling hates me. But to bring this back to Tito, he looked all right in 1985 but was very quickly left behind. I'll remember him most for the neverending feud with Martel (don't think about it, J-Ru! It's fine!) but apart from that he didn't really do anything meaningful and I don't think he's going to be missed.

Reliving Royal Rumble 92 through this thread, it made me realize how loving weird WrestleMania 8 actually is via watching these from show to show. There's only two and a half months in-between and so much has happened that you'd think that there was a whole PPV mixed in there that you missed. There are a lot of crazy developments in-between the PPVs and some are outright bizarre, making it feel like we've gone from A to D. Having Savage vs. Flair for the title on its own raises so many questions.

With Sherri as Michaels' valet, I seem to recall a promo she did where she announced that she was smitten with Michaels after he decided to go out on his own. The way she explained that Dibiase graciously allowed her to move on to a different client because it was what she wanted made Dibiase sound like a really sweet guy despite being a greedy dickbag otherwise.

Since you established Bret vs. Piper happening, that means I can go into one of the strangest and stupidest matches of this era. With Piper beating the Mountie for the IC title, it made sense to give him a rematch that he had time to prepare for. Piper vs. Mountie II happened on Saturday Night's Main Event and it lasted just over three minutes. During the match, Piper never removed his shirt and completely no-sold it when the Mountie used his cattle prod on Piper's neck. After handily winning, Piper then removed his shirt to reveal a black vest with "SHOCK PROOF" written across the chest. So that happened.

Michaels has gone on record to say that his match with Tito was one of the most disappointing in his career and it's hard not to agree. Those two should have put on something amazing and it was just a wet fart.

no, what happened was that Marty went out to a club with a 19 year old, and spent the night dancing and drinking with her

at the end, the cops tried to bust her for underage drinking and there was a bit of a struggle over her fake ID and they both ended up being arrested initially for assault, but Marty never actually touched a cop so it got dropped to resisting arrest

the cops found less than a gram of coke on the girl, and Marty had "drug paraphanalia" (plastic baggies)

per the WON, Marty got house arrest and biweekly urine tests and the girl just probation, because apparently the judge hated pro wrestlers

Again, I think Shawn being a heel also tempers it a bit, although if you come at it from the kink angle that adds to the iffy-ness, as you're portraying any non-vanilla practices as 'evil', but if you're looking at it as mildly abusive, then well, you're not supposed to like Shawn or approve of him treating women like that.
