Are we posting Criterion wuxia wish lists? Because I have a few for that None of these have a blu-ray release: Eight Diagram Pole Fighter (1984, Lau Kar-Leung) Dao (1995, Tsui Hark) Last Hurrah for Chivalry (1979, John Woo) And some Chang Cheh would be great. The Heroic Ones (1970) has a blu-ray release already, but One-Armed Swordsman (1967) and Golden Swallow (1968) do not. I wonder how difficult it would be to license Shaw Bros movies. Amazon has a bunch right now but most of them are English dub only which suuuucks

Is it just me or is that Bergman set an uncharacteristically great deal for Criterion? With the B&N sale it'll be $150, making it $3.85 per film. Pretty amazing.

Half of the set will likely be the exact same discs as already released other than the new 4K of The Seventh Seal and obviously the upcoming The Virgin Spring and Scenes from a Marriage since they're being upgraded in the coming months. The rest of the films are probably transfers/restorations direct from Svensk Filmindustri. The four Bergmans I have all note transfers done by them directly without any Criterion involvement.

Power of Pecota posted:Huh, awesome, I had no idea that was happening. I’d say go for the TV cut. It asks a bit more of your patience but it’s by far the best version. It flows much better, characters are more rounded out and you won’t miss out on some marvelous, crucial scenes (like Alexander in the attic, more great stuff involving the bishop and the retelling of the dream at the end)

I've also never seen the theatrical cut of Fanny and Alexander, but I just can't imagine what would be cut. You'd either have to cut scenes from the first portion where you get to know the family, which are so amazingly beautiful, or the second half where you really need to feel like the kids are really going through an endurance test or I'd think it would lose something essential in the storytelling.

Bergman himself said that he considered every scene he had to cut for the theatrical release an irreparable loss, so you definitely aren't alone. What I want to know is how Sweden's public TV was able to fund such a lavish production. Bloody socialists!

I've only seen the TV cut, and I was shocked at how briskly it all went by. It's a master class in great pacing without sacrificing patience and delicacy.

Samuel Clemens posted:What I want to know is how Sweden's public TV was able to fund such a lavish production. Bloody socialists! By 1982 Bergman was basically a god in Sweden and he was talking about Fanny & Alexander as his last feature film. So I imagine it was a "spare no expense" situation, at $7 million it was the most expensive Swedish film ever made at the time, but the wiki page makes it sound like Bergman had plenty of options for funding. It was a producer who had to convince Bergman that Sweden's film industry had enough man power to handle the production.

I've only seen Princess Bride once but it did absolutely nothing at all for me. It was the day after I saw a pretty grim documentary called Terror at the Mall though (Don't let the silly name fool you) so the mood that put me in probably affected me too much for such a light and fluffy film like that.
