Are we posting Criterion wuxia wish lists? Because I have a few for that

None of these have a blu-ray release:
Eight Diagram Pole Fighter (1984, Lau Kar-Leung)
Dao (1995, Tsui Hark)
Last Hurrah for Chivalry (1979, John Woo)

And some Chang Cheh would be great. The Heroic Ones (1970) has a blu-ray release already, but One-Armed Swordsman (1967) and Golden Swallow (1968) do not. I wonder how difficult it would be to license Shaw Bros movies. Amazon has a bunch right now but most of them are English dub only which suuuucks

I love Eight Diagram so much. I keep meaning to do some searching for the original, pre Alex Fu death script but I’m sure it doesn’t exist in English and I’m lazy

I just saw that for the first time in a theater recently and it instantly jumped to the top of my (largely shallow) kung fu list.

How is Dragon Inn? Watched the trailer and it seems like a sure purchase, but wanted to check in the thread first.

It's great, though more for its atmosphere and characters than the fight scenes.

Is it just me or is that Bergman set an uncharacteristically great deal for Criterion? With the B&N sale it'll be $150, making it $3.85 per film. Pretty amazing.

Half of the set will likely be the exact same discs as already released other than the new 4K of The Seventh Seal and obviously the upcoming The Virgin Spring and Scenes from a Marriage since they're being upgraded in the coming months.

The rest of the films are probably transfers/restorations direct from Svensk Filmindustri. The four Bergmans I have all note transfers done by them directly without any Criterion involvement.

Since they're doing both during the same week, should someone who's never seen Fanny and Alexander start with the TV or theatrical version?

I’d say go for the TV cut. It asks a bit more of your patience but it’s by far the best version. It flows much better, characters are more rounded out and you won’t miss out on some marvelous, crucial scenes (like Alexander in the attic, more great stuff involving the bishop and the retelling of the dream at the end)

I've also never seen the theatrical cut of Fanny and Alexander, but I just can't imagine what would be cut. You'd either have to cut scenes from the first portion where you get to know the family, which are so amazingly beautiful, or the second half where you really need to feel like the kids are really going through an endurance test or I'd think it would lose something essential in the storytelling.

Samuel Clemens

I think we should call the Avengers.

Bergman himself said that he considered every scene he had to cut for the theatrical release an irreparable loss, so you definitely aren't alone.

What I want to know is how Sweden's public TV was able to fund such a lavish production. Bloody socialists!

It probably wasn't all that expensive. I'm always surprised by the economy of some period pieces. In my head Amadeus looks like it must have cost $100,000,000 but in reality it was like 18 million.

By 1982 Bergman was basically a god in Sweden and he was talking about Fanny & Alexander as his last feature film. So I imagine it was a "spare no expense" situation, at $7 million it was the most expensive Swedish film ever made at the time, but the wiki page makes it sound like Bergman had plenty of options for funding. It was a producer who had to convince Bergman that Sweden's film industry had enough man power to handle the production.
