He needed time to grow into the gimmick but was getting it when he faced Page at Long Beach and everything finally clicked when he faced Finlay at Koruken Hall

Yeah, it's very much a case of growing into the push he was given, it seems like he just needed a few months to bed the character in

An underrated part of his performance in the G1 so far is Rocky on the English commentary desk. Hearing one of his ostensible stablemates screaming at Tanahashi to kill him with a chair is pretty good at selling how much of a scumbag White is.

I also really like that Tana in particular isn't a dumb babyface. If a heel bring a chair into play or punches him in the cock, he's a-ok with returning the favour. Didn't help today, but gives him a level of credibility that WWE just wouldn't do.

Their interaction after the match ruled. Rocky hates Jay White so much and you can tell he is worried that Chaos might actually start to breath with the Switchblade (nobody knows what that means).

My entire WK scenario fell apart the first night of the B block so now my guess is Naito beating White in the finals and beating Kenny at WK. It's the best possible main event for Naito's big moment too because I think he has better chemistry with Kenny than he does with Okada.

Kenny's post-match promo was basically a neon sign saying "NAITO'S WINNING" because he was being such a douche about it.

Also, I can't wait to hear Rocky's reaction when Okada finally gets his mojo back.

STOP DOING HEROIN
I hate to keep picking on Yoshi but man, his butterfly lock sucks. It's like the John Cena STF on the level of "never looks like it's actually hurting someone" and I got worried EVIL would tap to it. Thankfully, sanity prevailed.

Otherwise, pretty good show. Elgin/Page was excellent, Suzuki/Makabe was a fun Dad Brawl, and Jay White delivered again.

Also his reaction if the YOSHI beating Jay theory comes to be.

He got kinda screwed by Tanahashi being all busted up right before Wrestle Kingdom, leading to a flat match for his return from excursion. Not to mention losing that match. They started the turnaround real good with the US title stuff, honestly, because he succeeded in manipulating Bullet Club. And he’s just improved drastically since then with Okada bringing him into CHAOS and Jay trying to corrupt them and take over

My fav part of the Yoshi Hashi match was when he tripped over EVIL and slid under the bottom ring rope to get to the turnbuckle.

I'm watching now and that Yoshi Hashi match really is tragic. Commentary is trying real hard to put him over but he just looked bad and botchy.

I already answered this! He's chilling in Hokkaido to escape from the ridiculous heat in Tokyo. He got beer with the lads after yesterday's show

He did post this great photo of a familiar face showing up to Miho's photobook signing looking super creepy

Weird reliance on repeat gimmicks in short succession thus far in the average-good matches. The great-amazing matches are still great-amazing. I'd expect the Firing Squad shenanigans to continue until it's time for Tama to lose an important match that eliminates him from contention.

Tonight I watched Ibushi vs ZSJ, Omega vs Naito, and White vs Tanahashi. That was a drat good chunk of wrestling. Kota beating Zack was my favorite match out of the three. I really want my boy Naito to get his wins now

Hey, whatever works. That's the downside of having such a concentration of matches, I guess, but I'd be willing to bet seems repetitive now will evolve and be countered later in the tourney.

turn it all around

Decently fun show. YOSHI is stinky but I feel like this is the most emotion I've seen from him before? Scary powerbomb botch, though.

I'm v much invested in YTR showing himself as a good wrestler and I really, really want him to tap ZSJ out in their match.

Main event was great and Jay taking down all the top names is fantastic. Way too many god drat ref bumps/distraction spots tonight, though.

Gumball Gumption
Jan 7, 2012

Barricade spots are just a modern wrestling thing and the low blows are telling a story. Ishii was playing Yano's game and I think Jay's low blows are a reference to Nakamura. It's just the ref bumps that feel like they go to that well too many times. Like, if Jay is doing a ref bump then have the rest of the nights matches do something different.

I have no idea how anyone managed to watch the Tana and Kenny matches after the Switchblade debut without being constantly distracted by him fixing his hair out of his face after Every. Single. Move. Thank god he got that sorted out.

My god that ending sequence on Ibushi and ZSJ had me screaming out loud. That was awesome as hell.

But oh man I never thought I’d fall in love with a socialist vegan, but goddamn ZSJ is a master of credible submission holds. They don’t look like rest holds, they look like things that actually hurt and are legit.

I love NJPW.
