Pretty much. The only one I would question is Bohemian Rhapsody, but it wasn't a true parody, just a polka version- which is still great. Two that come to mind are "Trash Day" (Nelly's Hot in Here) and "Trapped in the Drive Thru" (R Kelly's Trapped in the Closet). "Amish Paradise" definitively. He's a genius.

As a musician I have immense respect for Weird Al's band. Replication of just one other musician's sound and style is difficult and these guys replicate multiple bands and do it incredibly well. As such I can't really pick a single track as my favorite. I did enjoy showing my grandmother, who was a teacher for many years, Word Crimes so I'll go with that one.

It always kinda bugs me that in Drive Thru, the wife gets mad at the young female attendant for thinking that the husband is Paul. Like, why would you be jealous or mad about that? Still one of my favorites though.

I'm sad that Prince never gave All permission to do a cover.

Dare to be Stupid is a better Devo song than anything Devo ever did, and Mark Mothersbaugh admitted it.

When I was a kid I had a tape of Peter and the Wolf narrated by Weird Al, and side B was an original sequel to Camille Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals. The liner notes included interpretations of what each of the new songs meant, pointing out key changes and instrumentation and how they related to each animal, and it taught me a lot about music appreciation. I'm definitely going to track down a copy for my kid.

Traffic Jam is very obviously a parody of Prince's "Let's Go Crazy", which is an amazing song. Prince is one of the greatest artists of all time lol yeah you've been missing out, jump on that poo poo!

"Dare to be Stupid" just sounds like a straightforward Gang of Four song more and more these days.

Uhhh...that's not at all the story I heard. I thought it was sort of the other way around.

Al asked permission, and it went through Coolio's manger/agent/SOMEONE other than Coolio and responded to Al saying "yes."

Al made it, it was a hit, then Coolio said he never gave permission or was never asked. Al apologized for the miscommunication, and I think they're good now, but Coolio seemed upset for a while since I guess he thought it was too serious of a song to parody.

The going theory is that Coolio 100% gave permission, but then got mad that Al's song got so popular and detracted from his song, so then after-the-fact said he never gave permission.

It is, and it's one of my favorites from Al. It's also incredibly, ridiculously difficult to sing, to the extent that even Al himself doesn't perform it live because he knows he's not going to be able to nail that "Would you look at all that stuff..." section again, certainly not on the first try.

BioEnchanted posted:

I think you've got Coolio mixed up with Lady Gaga. (Well, there's a sentence I didn't expect to write today :v:) Gaga's management refused to give Al permission to parody "Born This Way" without ever actually consulting Gaga herself, and when she found out about this she contacted Al and gave him permission.

edit: Also, Nathan Rabin (former The Onion AV Club writer, author of Weird Al: The Book) is doing a feature on his website where he reviews every song in Al's catalogue: https://www.nathanrabin.com/happy-place/?category=The+Weird+Accordion+To+Al
