Yeah but without pop culture everything would be so boring and all I would be doing is work like some goddamn Puritan. I guess I would realize how bullshit everything is and that would create a mass movement to overthrow the capitalist system.

yea he was just a grumpy old puritan type who thought that any time you spent not reading history and politics you might as well just open the door for the fascists to hang out in your brain. Like, I disagree, but I get how a guy with his background would go 'maybe if you loving idiots read a book not about whatever the pop culture is right now you'd see the violent authoritarians eager to be handed power on a silver platter'.

What's funny is that kind of puritanical line of thinking is probably why American work culture is so awful and lends it well to capitalism/meritocracy; this country was founded by people who just wanted to work because if they didn't that would stray them away to hell because of decadence or something.

I dunno—he liked opera and the symphony and stuff (ie pop culture from 200 years ago) because he thought it took time and concentration to appreciate vs tv which is designed to be as facile as possible. If I remember right he also liked modern art and avant-garde theater for the same reason. His ideal society is probably Star Trek the Next Generation.

this is true, he was very much into the idea of 'high art' vs 'low art' which for someone of his social outlook is...odd....

I don't know scholarly types just tend to inject good politics into art of the past while anything "of the culture" is just the worst of our society's ills. You can see that with the critical perception country music pre-60's being more class conscious, gangster rap being viewed as a radical analysis of racial inequality, and lately critical thought of the star wars prequels being a study of how democracy turns to fascism.

I am amused how people try to push the prequels being high art. like there are some interesting basic ideas but the movies are crap on so many levels. on the music stuff. its just stuff people grew up with and the fact that music is even more a corporate creation(it always was but its more obvious now) then it was back then. that and i like older folk music then newer country.

thats what always amuses me. like all the "deep artistic old media that people love like Shakespeare and syphonys like Mozart such where made because money or mass market appeal or for patron appeal. but because it uses "old" english(its actually new English but whatever) and sounds fancy to our modern ears and people like Bloom love it, therefore its classic poo poo. none of shakespears stuff is original but he tells it in a classic way with timeless themes, it has staying power.

People in the present are always aware of how much the present sucks, so as soon as the present dies and becomes the past, people are ready to reassess it with the critical distance that then becomes possible and look especially at the parts of it that seem to escape whatever poo poo is intolerable about the present.

Adorno for example praised elements of art produced under aristocracy because those elements represent something outside capitalism that he was hungry for because capitalism had starved him for it, even though he would have found feudalism exactly as objectionable as capitalism.

I in the 21st century find it appalling that Adorno hated the idea of a society of comfort where most people had secure jobs and disposable income, as I would very much prefer those conditions to my own.

I always loved star wars, hell when i did make a wish for being a health deprived kid, i picked Lucas ranch. it was amazing and we saw all the props. that being said, as i got older i found other interests and even though i grew up with the prequels. i still think they are pretty garbage but i can understand why people like them because they have good memories attached to them(as do I) now a days, i still like star wars and i think the disney movies have for the most part been decent/good/whatever. but i just hate the fanbase because its seems to be either weird extreame chud types who hate everything star wars, or weird fans who think everything is perfect and magical. i just hate fanbases in general.

i thought she works well enough. both sides view rose as either the best part of the movie or the worst. I think she was fine both as a character or thematically but 8 in general is one of those movies that put its themes ahead of story so you get bad cringy poo poo like the ending with her and finn. sure it works thematically but as story its kinda badly done. yeah, most fandoms are terrible in general. they either become resetera or /pol/ with no inbetween.

I only saw the movie once, but it felt like a part of her role at first was to point at things and say how awesome they were. Her role near the end didn't bother me as much. It's a dumb reason for not liking her, and if I rewatched it I would probably pay more attention to the rest of what she did and find out I was wrong, which just adds to why I feel a bit guilty.
