Yeah, remember when you out-brawled a team with your hunchbacks in the basement? Me neither.

Clan Battle Mech = Good Mech. Also has some decently high mounts and a good mix of hardpoints on the different variants. Should be a couple of builds that're competitive with the Hunchie IIC. It'll be nice to have another half-decent Clan medium.

Also, it can fit an XL 400, so you'll be able to PPC kite brawlers all day in Scouting.

Oh poo poo, an actual Steel Viper mech.

And one of the very best in its weight class in TT, no less. It's a Storm Crow, but just a bit better.

edit: Actually, now that I think about it, there isn't much you can do with a Stormcrow that you can't do better with a Vapor Eagle. Unless it gets some really bad geometry (unlikely based on the concept art), or really bad maneuverability stats (but it has jump jets), this makes the Crow obsolete.

The Vapor Eagle is actually a full year older.

Vapor Eagle has cool concept art but the model will not be nearly as sleek and the animation will look like a guy holding a dump.

Grognards might resent it, might try to deny it, but the moment they look upon Kai Allard-Liao's smirking mug, they know the truth in their heart of hearts. Battletech is full anime; it has always been full anime.

But anyway, in other news!

quote:

In regard to addressing the high damage Clan alpha strikes, the PTS numbers moved in the right direction when trying to address this singular problem. However, it is not attaining the level of reduction in a manner that would be fair to all aspects of Clan gameplay. Energy boating aka 'Laser vomit' is a separate problem which does get affected by what is on PTS1.0, but PTS1.1 also hurt the lighter weight class 'Mechs that don't have the hardpoints to deal with the changes.

That being said, the numbers on PTS are NOT approved for implementation into the live environment. While some numbers could be refined and some numbers completely removed, as of right now, PTS1.0 and 1.1 values will not be put into the live environment.

At least they're able to grasp that what they've tried so far isn't working. Maybe if they keep at it, they'll have a decent set of patch notes in another year or two.

Fake edit: my grammar checker is very angry about the amount of passive voice in that quote.

Good news that they aren't pushing those laser nerfs out. I wonder where they are going next with it.

Who knows?

They've painted themselves into a corner in a lot of different ways. It's almost impossible to attack Clan laser vomit without cutting the legs out from under a bunch of marginal clan mechs. Even if they could, the current peak 'n poke meta is as much a function of the engine decouple and skill tree so if a major nerf did go through players will just transition to the next best alpha centric builds. And even if they didn't, there's still other stuff like sleeper over-quirked IS mechs (e.g., the IV-FOUR and ilk) and the current stupid state of LRMs waiting in the wings.

It's turtles all the way down, except instead of turtles it's myopic balance decisions. They've spent years laying on one fix after another to try and force some level of parity between the two factions, and we're now approaching the point where they can't drastically alter any of the extant systems without reworking the whole shebang.

Stealth armor makes it so that you can't be target locked and also makes you show up as dark on thermal vision regardless of your heat. The downside is that your heat sinking is basically multiplied by zero.

What makes the Vapor Eagle look good? I think the hardpoints are all over the place, I can't imagine any powerful builds on it. Not like the Stormcrow or Huntsman where you can boat missiles or lasers. I can't see it do well in scouting either. It does look very cool though, almost like a clan Assassin. I'll buy it but....make me feel the hype boys.

So you're not feeling mounting a pair of ER PPCs and 5 or so heavy machine guns, huh?

Also, the Veagle-A can boat 4 missiles, plus some supporting energy, that not good enough for you?

Arm mounted missiles make c-SRMs already atrocious spread even worse and you generally want ~6 SRM6s at that tonnage. Whatever it's optimal builds, I don't see the VGL being a missile brawler.

Looking over the options, I could see it running most of the same builds as the HBK-IIC with slightly lower mounts and give more tons to play around with. Dual PPCs, HLL vomit, ATMs, UACs, etc. Which is better for a given build will depend a lot on whether or not the higher set of side torso weapon mounts on the VGL have priority over the lower pair. If it's the latter, the HBK will remain the superior choice for almost everything.

You do understand that the VGL is a hell of a lot faster, right?

Skippy McPants
Mar 19, 2009

It can be, and I expect some builds, like dual PPC, might want to use the extra five tons over the HBK for more engine. However, you need look no further than the Black Lanner for a prime example of why heavier mediums don't want to over-invest in speed. I think most VGLs will want an XL300, which is faster than the 255 typically used in HBKs, but not by leaps and bounds.
