I've had SiN on GOG for a while so I decided to give it a try. Took a little trial and error to get the controls dialed in. It feels a lot floatier than I'd like but not horrible. Then I got killed by turrets that seemed like bullet sponges.

You can't destroy those turrets, you need to turn them off elsewhere.

Those secutity turrets with the protetive shield on them (blue when you shoot em) can't be destroyed. Look for terminals to shut them off.

You can't be lenient with the shotgun early on in game, since you have a permenant limit of 50 shells and you only get them in few areas unless you know where the secrets are. That way the game limits you to bullets, specifically from your handgun since that's a hitscan unlike the submachine gun and the machine gun and it does more damage than the sub. That's one thing I don't like that much about the game, but if you're felling lucky with rng from dropped shotgun guys, you can be more shotgun crazy.

Later on in the game though, you're more likely to use grenades, heavy MG and rockets often, but you can still go shotgun happy. Also the sniper rifle in select areas, but you'll know where those are once you start dying there a whole bunch of times.

Is anyone else having trouble running old Lithtech engine games lately? Blood II with dgVoodoo and a widescreen fix went from running perfectly so long as I didn't try to record it with OBS about two months ago, to not even attempting to run now - all I get is my Steam status changing for about two seconds, and I have no idea what broke it - that last major Windows update? So that Unreal remake project is apparently a bigger clusterfuck than it looked. It got featured in Moddb's Week in Mods where it turns out that the creator's been deleting all the negative comments, and now they're having a meltdown in the comments section of the Week in Mods article because of course they are. Also, they have video of the interior of the Vortex Rikers, and it's somehow even more hideous than you'd think.

Operation Black Mesa looks like it's coming along decently though, that'll be nice to see after Black Mesa Xen and Half-Life 3 come out.

There's so much drama involving mods it makes you wonder what goes on behind the scenes at actual game studios.

Guillermus
Dec 28, 2009

Maybe not that much compared to modders because they're guys that are actually earning money for a job and their work belongs to a studio or publisher while a modder think more about ownership. I think that the drama would be the normal amount of any job where you spend a lot of time with coworkers. Most modders can only be in touch via internet.

Just my opinion of course.

Speaking of melodramatic idiots, I've more or less finished a big update to MetaDoom, a gameplay mod of mine. I'll probably make it an "official" release with a trailer and everything next Thursday or so (the day before the reveal of the new game!), but if you're feeling brave grab the Github master, run the bat file and throw the resulting PK3 at GZDoom. Then, I dunno, tell me what's poo poo or broken so I can alleviate that.

There's a changelog, too, so if you've played it before, you know what's changed.

No to either of those monsters just yet, but that's a pretty good idea for differentiating that guy from the other Mancs. I'll have to write that one down.

This looks super baller. And I've been asking for FPS where you can juggle enemies in the air with bullets.

Although looking up and down in doom kinda bothers me because of the perspective, ah well.

Part 2 of DF Retro's water rendering videos just came out, thought I'd post it here cause they cover some old FPS games and HL2 in part 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4MMlKhJfGI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exp1Yrxt50A
HL2's section starts at 22:20, with Far Cry just before it.

Nice timing on these videos cause I posted about HL2's reflections in this thread about a month ago, and it answered the question I had on why HL2 reflections look so nice. HL2 uses planar reflections which I guess is a lot more expensive cause most games today are using screen space reflections.
There's a nice comparison on the unreal engine documentation

They are, much more expensive. The Unreal page doesn't really explain it well, but:

Screenspace reflections are created by rendering all of the scene except the water's surface, then clipping out the part that would be reflected in the water, flipping it upside down, and putting it where the water's surface would be (plus shader effects), more or less how you'd fake it in Photoshop. This can be done very quickly, but its chief limitation is that the water may be expected to reflect things that aren't available in the source scene, like the undersides of objects or stuff on the ceiling above what the camera can see. This is covered up with blurs, fadeouts, and other trickery.

Planar reflections are created by re-rendering the entire scene from scratch, with the camera moved to a point of view that causes it to produce an image that looks how the reflection would look from the original camera. This new render is then allowed to show through where the water's surface would be (plus shader effects). You get a perfect 100% accurate reflection, but everything in the scene has to run through the GPU again so it's almost as expensive as drawing an entire other frame. You can save a little work by rendering the reflection at a lower resolution, reducing LOD, skipping some details or expensive effects, but it's way more expensive than the image reuse trick in the screenspace method.

With screen space reflections, you cheat by using the scene you've already rendered.

Same for any other "screen space" rendering trick (like ambient occlusion): you get to boost performances at the cost of accuracy. For a fast-paced action game, it's a good trade-off because you get something that looks nice enough without too much slow-down. For a walking simulator, on the other hand, the player gets more time to notice the oddities in the visuals.
