Isn't it a thing in MtG circles that they made it a rule you can be disqualified in tournaments for smelling so bad your opponent literally can't stand to be in the same room as you?

It wouldn't surprise me. I know there's an also-ran comic book store in my city that was also a hub for Magic and other card games because they had like half the store dedicated to game tables. I went in there once because the top-tier store was sold out of what I was looking for so I figured I'd try my luck there just in case.

I made it about a minute before I turned and hurried my rear end back out on the street, the smell was that bad :zombie:

For FNM it depends on the individual store running the event, but yes at all big timey tournaments there are minimum cleanliness requirements. WotC has also started removing DCI certification and tournament support from stores with super racist managers. According to the mtg youtubers that the youtube algorithm promotes, this is destroying society as we know it. Apparently by watching some not racist mtg youtubers I was signally to the algorithm that I needed some racist ones to get balanced out.

KNEEL BEFORE THE WICKED KING!
Every day on the way to, and from, work I pass by a small game store that runs weekly tabletop stuff. A couple of times the idiot part of my brain has told me to at least go check it out, how bad could it be? The sensible part of my brain then smacks it and reminds me that it's a small store that is basically in an alley. Probably definitely don't wanna do that.

I'm not sure if that's the point of all games streaming, and I don't think it should necessarily be the major selling point at least for a retro/indie streaming platform - people don't stream other media because they don't have a dvd player, they do it for the convenience of accessing a big library of stuff for cheap.

Streaming game data only and playing on local hardware is totally doable and has existed at least since the 1990s (in limited format), almost everything can run a SNES or a MD emulator, and there's especially no reason that a streaming library like that couldn't work on a console like the Switch.

It's not something that'd work with modern 40GB+ games certainly but it makes the most sense to run locally for at least up to PS1 era games.

It doesn't work like that. ' Streaming' a game onto local hardware AND actually playing it off local hardware is just regular downloading. Clearing it off a cache instead of just leaving it installed in the device is just needlessly stupid and pointless.

Kim Justice posted:

It's gonna be tricky yeah. When I played it I was surprised about the lack of lag, especially as retro games tend to make that more noticeable (there was one moment when things went a little haywire, mind - although that did also show there weren't any smoke and mirrors going on in the demo).

I didn't make it too clear that these guys are concentrating on retro games too - with perhaps indie games coming down the line (so far it's a fair amount of UK/Europe-based stuff, SNK and Data East are definitely in though - so if you wanna stream up some Metal Slug then that'll be a thing). It's not an AAA-games service. I certainly wish them the best in any case - a "Netflix for video games" is something I'd like to see succeed.

Retro games are an even worse proposition for a streaming service, because just about anything that isn't a JRPG is heavily reliant on quick reactions in combat or platforming. Whatever they're BS'ing about "no lag" is just plain laughable, because I can guaran-drat-tee that whatever network testing they've done won't match real-world situations. And as for it' being "tricky"... try "logistically unsound"; The only way you're getting "no lag" happening is with a straight fibre run from your home to wherever the server cluster for their service is, and the odds of that are pretty loving low for most places in the world.

That doesn't even bring in factors like download limits on your internet or peak bandwidth times. "Netflix for games" is just simply not feasible anytime soon.

Part of that is that some people who are being prescribed anti-depressants really do just need a lifestyle change, which makes it even harder for people who really need them to function.

nah, Microsoft bought them out. gearbox just likes to publish a ton of stuff in hopes that they get another hit because they suck at making/writing their own games. they set it up so most of the money goes to the studio and the IP is owned by the studio. they know their name is poo poo so they hope people will buy the bulletstorm remake made by the original devs in hopes that they MIGHT publish a sequel. its nice but gross as gently caress too.

Problem is, there are SO MANY people that think that any medication at all is a placebo at best, harmful at worst, and apparently that brain problems are all just the result of not trying hard enough to be happy, instead of the human body occasionally just loving up its chemicals. It's frustrating because like I've literally had depression and anxiety as long as I can remember, and tried nearly every non-med treatment available, and nothing worked, but a small dose of SSRIs makes me capable of actually functioning. But still, I've had people try to tell me that I don't need medication, as though somehow twenty years of trying to Just Cheer Up wasn't enough evidence. :fuckoff:

This is great. If I was to name my single least favorite trope in all of fiction, it would be the concept of “special people are born special and everyone else should just know their place”. Particularly since it’s so common throughout fantasy and especially the superhero genre.

Even as a little kid, this was enough to make me intensely dislike Harry Potter for the way in which the narrative constantly puts down non-wizards. Rowling obviously intended for the reader to have some sympathy for them because Voldemort and his followers hate them, and that’s portrayed as a bad thing, but even the good wizards tend to be extremely condescending, like the muggles are some sort of exotic animal species to be studied and protected.

And how many superhero stories have their been in which the hero started out ordinary, then went out and actively worked to gain their superpowers? Not many. Even characters like Batman and Iron Man who don’t have powers are still wealthy geniuses who can only do what they do because of who they are. It’s far more likely for villains to be entirely self-made, however, sometimes explicitly because they’re jealous of the heroes.

I’m not saying I dislike all stories that have this trope (except Harry Potter. gently caress Harry Potter.) just that it annoys me whenever the writer goes out of their way to point how much more "worthy" the special people are compared to all the nobodies. No joke, it actually annoyed me so much that it’s partly responsible for me wanting to become a writer, because I wanted there to be more books about someone totally ordinary who throws themselves headfirst into adventure in order to earn specialness, as opposed to the typical protagonist who gets dragged through the plot kicking and screaming after having someone else tell them how special they are. Book’s almost finished at this point, but who knows whether it’ll ever get published.

She's a film reviewer on youtube, I think it was indiemogul she worked for.

I used to watch her but got turned off since she only ever seemed to care about the business aspects of a movie rather than the artistic ones, maybe that makes me a snob I don't care. She also stopped interviewing regular people just coming out of a movie which I thought was an interesting gimmick for her show compared to most internet reviews.

Still, I think I'd need to see the context of her Lady and the Tramp comment before I get out the pitchfork.

It's most likely, as all those hot takes are, just an allergic reaction to an overwhelmingly white cast of characters being diversely represented. Black Canary, in this case, is represented as a character by her whiteness and blondness. All other characteristics are secondary.

Considering those attributes are super duper rare in comics, I can see why she's upset that one minority is being pushed aside from the SJW forced-diversity agenda.
