my favorite SEC story, not like i got a lot of em, is the time a business called sand hill exchange was in its infancy.

the business idea was simple: a fantasy stock market for companies that were expeceted to go public but had not yet. they had a bunch of beta testers using the platform. it was like a casino game for market and tech nerds. a fantasy^2 stock market for stocks that weren't even listed yet

the reason why the SEC bankrupted them is also simple: bitcoin. they decided to allocate bitcoin to their userbase adn back their transactions with them. this immediatly turned their beta testing exercise into an unlicsensed casino

i wish i could find it now, but when one of the owners found out he was eing investigated by teh SEC he published a "user traffic analytics" blog post detailing how 50% of their traffic was coming from men in their 40's to 60's using internet explorer and blackberries accessing the internet from the SEC server

sv techbros real blindness comes from bring convinced the software programming is the hardest part of any project. that's why they keep getting suckered into "blockchain" poo poo which promises to organize a market for X and then handwaves away how it will actually interact with the real world as minor details that will naturally be easily solved.

they assume that because Musk had the idea of self driving electric cars with bad nerd jokes in the UI that the actual execution isn't really all that important because that's the boring poo poo that happens all by itself.

I assume we're into some serious airbud territory here. Like why would they have a rule specifying that your car can't seal the exits and trap you inside of it in the event of an accident. The rule doesn't exist because no one could think of it. Who could expect that you would need that rule .

I would absolutely love to work for a fully funded SEC or CFPB enforcement office. when i worked predatory lending the only thing that made the job tolerable was arguing with sleazy salespeople and killing their deals for the most arbitrary and stupid reasons possible just so i could keep some dumbassed 19 year old off of a motorcycle that was going to cost him $600 a month in payments + insurance out of his $1,500 pre-tax income

SEC would basically be arguing with the same low rent boiler room used vehicle sales people, but in penthouse offices where people wore suits instead of shut down ihops converted into salesfloors.

shoulda paid me commission instead of an hourly rate, dumbasses

Elon Musk Confronts a Fateful Tweet and an ‘Excruciating’ Year
During an hourlong interview with The Times, Elon Musk choked up, speaking about how his health has suffered and that, from a personal standpoint, he believes “the worst is yet to come.”

Elon Musk was at home in Los Angeles, struggling to maintain his composure. “This past year has been the most difficult and painful year of my career,” he said. “It was excruciating.”

At multiple points in an hourlong interview with The New York Times, he choked up, noting that he nearly missed his brother’s wedding this summer and spent his birthday holed up in Tesla’s offices as the company raced to meet elusive production targets on a crucial new model.

Asked if the exhaustion was taking a toll on his physical health, Mr. Musk answered: “It’s not been great, actually. I’ve had friends come by who are really concerned.”

The events set in motion by Mr. Musk’s tweet have ignited a federal investigation and have angered some board members, according to people familiar with the matter. Efforts are underway to find a No. 2 executive to help take some of the pressure off Mr. Musk, people briefed on the search said. And some board members have expressed concern not only about Mr. Musk’s workload but also about his use of Ambien, two people familiar with the board said.

To help sleep when he is not working, Mr. Musk said he sometimes takes Ambien. “It is often a choice of no sleep or Ambien,” he said.

But this has worried some board members, who have noted that sometimes the drug does not put Mr. Musk to sleep but instead contributes to late-night Twitter sessions, according to a person familiar with the board’s thinking. Some board members are also aware that Mr. Musk has on occasion used recreational drugs, according to people familiar with the matter.

In the interview on Thursday, Mr. Musk alternated between laughter and tears.

Every quote from this article is gold:

quote:

He blamed short-sellers — investors who bet that Tesla’s shares will lose value — for much of his stress. He said he was bracing for “at least a few months of extreme torture from the short-sellers, who are desperately pushing a narrative that will possibly result in Tesla’s destruction.”

Referring to the short-sellers, he added: “They’re not dumb guys, but they’re not supersmart. They’re O.K. They’re smartish.”

quote:

Mr. Musk said he had no plans to relinquish his dual roles as chairman and chief executive.

But, he added, “if you have anyone who can do a better job, please let me know. They can have the job. Is there someone who can do the job better? They can have the reins right now.”
