Y'all are real pals and I'm grateful for you all and your kind words. Honestly if I could just get a little more income to show for what I contribute I'd feel pretty self actualized. The unfortunate thing is I don't have a talent fitting of say, a Patreon, otherwise I'd be all over it.

the most virtuous walks of life (No offense, bwehehe) aren't the best financially. the fact you can budget and save and not be in danger is better 'adulting' than a heck of a lot of others. ur killin it & should be proud of the work you do, the results are just seen elsewhere than the bank

Would you be my new best friends?

9-5 is a bullshit mentality that has long outlived its usefulness. It works for some people, not for others, and I'm grateful for the ever growing shift towards recognizing that it's far more important that people get their work done in whatever way suits them than that they be present between certain hours like it was loving high school.

A lot of older people still have that mindset that a 40 hour work week is the only proper way to do things, I'm sure your parents are well-meaning and loving in that they think this is something to aspire to, but you shouldn't worry about meeting some arbitrary standard from a bygone era.

I keep a budget for myself every month and never ever come anywhere close to running out of money or anything like that but I just feel like I'm not adulting right because my parents have conditioned me to feel like the only "right" way is a 9-5 job. There's a lot of reasons why that's not necessarily feasible for me, but I hate feeling worthless and like I don't deserve what I give myself because most of my advocacy work is volunteer. I just hate feeling like this. :(

Just had to get this off my chest.

Hey man I know how you feel, I was in a similar situation a few years ago. 9-5 is an outdated mentality in a lot of cases and if you are paying rent and your budget is running in the black and not the red I say you are doing perfectly fine for yourself in this day and age buddy. 9-5 being the only "right" way is some capitalist propaganda poo poo that views people entirely on what they can produce. Your volunteer advocacy work, whatever it is, is far far better then that because you're choosing to sacrifice a part of yourself to help make other people's lives better. That's noble poo poo.

Speaking as someone who works the 9-5 shift and has no problems with it...

...are you paying your bills? Are you helping more than you're hindering? Are you meeting your obligations? Are you doing all of these things without causing harm to another person by your actions or inactions?

Congratulations! You're a functioning adult and living up to the terms of the social contract.

I do 9-5 but don't think it's for everyone. When I was growing up, people always pushed you have to go to college and I did, and was the first one in my family to do so and felt pretty good about myself. After I got out, had some debt and saw the job opportunities and saw the other situations my classmates got themselves in I am teaching my kids that you don't have to do college if you don't want to. Trade school is just as good, you get out earlier and if you're interested in making decent money where you live should study a profession that is in your area.

I always think if I could go back I would take 0 loans and I would have studied nursing or engineering since those are the two biggest professions in my area.

That and Medicaid eligibility, yes.

See, the initial America logic is, disability income and Medicaid are need based programs for poor people. So once they start making money they are good, right? Except for the part where some people are permanently disabled and Medicaid is the ONLY way to get assistance paying for personal care. So you gotta stay poor.

Recently the US has created ABLE Accounts which is a special kind of savings account for people with disabilities but it's massively complicated and btw if I die the government takes my money from my family as restitution for the fact that they didn't just Hitler my no-legs-working rear end.

Wish I was still a paleontologist, but then again I dodged a bullet with not being accepted to grad school considering the pressure it puts on my friends who have, definitely not for me.

I'm an optimist but I think you're mostly right. The idea that more progressives (by America standards) are running on a Medicaid For All platform NEVER would have happened a few years ago. Yes, horrible white nationalists are emboldened but a good percentage of the other side is (thank gently caress) waking up from complacency and moving further left.

Anyway I want to make it clear I will be fine and I love you guys for the support and kind words. Just know that if I get a little snippy or seem irritable chances are it's just some existential crisis. Also if I do create a Ko-Fi or something (probably the best Patreon-esque option for me if I go there from what I can gather) I might mention it and then people can PM me if they want a link.

For those who don't know what I ACTUALLY do, I spend my life advocating for systems change and rights for people with disabilities, mental health issues, and substance use disorders, and I've literally won multiple statewide prestigious awards for my efforts but I don't care about any of that. I just want to leave the world better than it was when I got here, or drat sure try to. :)

I'm feeling something new...something...I'm happy??!!

The world needs you as you are. Happy, that is. Without you the world will never have something unique added to the fabric of life. Those that you have directly or indirectly affected by just existing would be poorer. The world would be poorer.

That is "success" to me. Every day you get up and do good, do bad, accomplish and fail you succeed in life. Monetary value can never touch what you bring to the table. "Fitting in" only hurts us as we lose who you are.

You are already succeeding.

Same, also in related gloomy news today is the last day of my job, my boss had originally planned on holding onto me for at least another week or two, possibly through Labor Day, but a last minute reshuffling by Corporate changed those plans, and thus me only finding this out yesterday

That(combined with too much caffeine) led me to have one of those "Long Dark Night of The Soul" Experiences last night, which wasn't a very pleasant one to have
