Nah it's a bit annoying, especially when you can get around it in GTA5 by going into first person mode and holding the run button.

We got some serious shit to discuss.

I have to admit, I REALLY enjoy games where pushing the stick all the way just makes you walk, and you have to press a button to run/jog. I TOTALLY get why it's frustrating for people, but for somebody who likes playing open world sims and feeling like I'm a part of the world, it makes it so much easier to just walk around and take in the details all around you. If movement speed is always faster, I just end up running all over the place, mindlessly following the minimap to my next objective. Some of my best times with RDR were from turning off the HUD and just wandering around, taking in the world. I mean, seems like the sort of thing you could do with a toggle and wouldn't unbalance things, but then you still have the issue of needing a whole button just for moving faster.

Stare-Out
Mar 11, 2010

What I like is move stick slightly to walk, push it all the way to run. That's all fine and good. Click in stick to go into a sprint, brilliant. That's a formula I can get behind and I think should be a standard for every third-person action game in the world. But at the very least map the run/sprint button to a shoulder button so I can move the camera around while I do it. It just seems so obvious and when it's not done in that way it comes across as a total oversight, especially in a third-person shooter like GTA or RDR and over all these years it's made Rockstar seem like a stuck-in-their-ways developer, doing things their way instead of what's best for the game.

That was genuinely baffling to me. I mean, in GTA4 multiplayer you could walk by slightly pushing the stick and run by pushing it all the way. To sprint, you had to press a face button, which was still bad, but at least an improvement. But they axed that from the GTA5 multiplayer altogether, yet in first-person view it works exactly like that. Whyyyyy?

Can either use a controller (then it’s the same)
Or choose to hold/toggle run/sprint (when on kb+m)

Dealing with different interfaces should be about what is better for each one instead of some half assed middle ground.

Some games have “always running” options, then you’d have to hold a button to walk if you want. It’s not like this is a solved problem and you can easily have everyone happy by letting them choose.

More options would be fine and good, just don't be dumb and make people choose between camera control and faster movement; boy a gunfight breaks out and I can choose between running for cover or moseying along and shootin' folks! Seriously if this is still in RDR2 it's phenomenally stupid, but if it's not, I'll happily bow down to Rockstar's genius.

Nothing is confirmed, everything is speculation until it comes from Rockstar or a journalist with direct access to the game.
The map came out long before we really new any officially confirmed details about the game, but has names and locations that have been confirmed. Similarly really specific stuff like the personalized camps for multiplayer, the roving camp in single player, that would be pretty lucky guesses if they were made up came out in the leaks.

Once again I don't think that anyone should take the leaks as the gospel truth for what we get in October. Still, a lot of the leaks including the map have been at least partially confirmed.

EDIT: And yeah it does get complicated with stuff like the fan made map based on the leaked map.

Yeah, for a dev team of their size (and money) it’s extremely lovely to only have that option of movement control (that I also find to be the worst one)

That's just it, like with GTA5 they have the money to put on a magnificent show, audiovisually speaking, but it's almost as if there is a hidden stubbornness to it all; they've largely stuck to their controls for a very long time for whatever reason when better options are available. I genuinely hope RDR2 will be the one to break from that pattern and give in (not that it would even be a significant thing to give in to) and have controls that are more widely accepted nowadays. It may seem like a small thing but it absolutely adds up over several hours of gameplay.

In GTA5 you're still walking normally unless you press the specific run button to run while aiming, which means you'll have to choose between fast movement and precise aiming. It's rubbish.

I remember Batman Arkham Asylum working just fine with keyboard/mouse. It was one of the few games where I didn't mind using either keyboard/mouse or a controller because both seemed fairly intuitive.

This is also just a matter of preference. I definitely agree there should at least be a toggle in the controller settings so everyone can have what they want, but I greatly prefer stick to walk/additional input to run in pretty much every immersive third person game, especially open world ones. Exceptions are stuff like Uncharted where constant frantic jogging and running fits the tone most of the time. God of War’s strikes a nice balance where you’ve got a slow jog max before a toggle sprint.

Running by default in a game like Assassin’s Creed Origins drives me crazy, I just want to saunter around like a big dick badass and feel immersed in this richly crafted ancient world, but everything about the control scheme seems geared to railroad me into sprinting like an rear end in a top hat over and through everything from GPS dot to GPS dot as fast as possible. Just maintaining a natural walk through a market requires careful feathering and constant vigilance to not bodyslam ancient cleopatras through their ashrams. It’s exhausting

Honestly, something I like about Rockstar games is how weighty the characters feel. Like in Red Dead and GTA V, it feels like I'm controlling humans who are awkward and are made of meat. I like that running is this thing that takes effort and is not just the default. It's a design choice, and I'm fine with it being something that Rockstar is prescribing on the player. Marston or Morgan effortlessly running across a town doesn't make sense.

The one depressing thing about Red Dead has been the shift in how Rockstar operates now. Basically it's all studios on deck instead of having individual studios work on games. Honestly, it seems pretty likely that Red Dead 2 might be the only game of this generation for Rockstar.

The last red dead if you killed someone in a canyon they would respawn further trapped in the canyon in sight of you with no cover. One of the dumbest things ive seen a multiplayer game do ever. It was pretty easy to do this to somebody or have it done to you unintentionally the way the map was. You actually had to kind conciously avoid doing it to people if you werent trying to gently caress with them.
