Cosmo isn't really a Marriott but they participate in their loyalty program.

That being said, Venetian and Palazzo participate in IHG's loyalty program (Intercontinental, Holiday Inn, etc) if that matters to you.

I'M HUGE!
My wife and I are planning a trip for early or mid December, possibly with another couple.

It's her first visit, but I've been during DEFCON. Stayed downtown once, and on the Strip last time. We already have a pretty good list of things we want to see, do, and eat. I have a few questions though:

We definitely want to stay on the Strip and will likely Uber or Lyft to anything that's not walkable. Speaking of which... December temperatures look fairly mild - I'm guessing light jacket weather during the day?

We were looking possibly staying at the Vdara, as we'd prefer a small suite but don't want to spend a fortune. We don't plan to gamble much, so it's not a big deal if there's not a casino right downstairs. The non-smoking part is nice as well. Has anyone stayed there? Are there better options for similar quality/price?

Is there anything we should know about visiting in colder/off-season months? Does anything important shut down?

Thanks in advance!

Light jacket is usually fine during the day, but the nights can get really cold, especially if it's windy. Make sure to pack a big jacket as well.

I love Vegas in December. Less people means it's much easier to walk around the strip and get into shows. Some of the shows don't run as often in the winter, but most of the big ones are running for at least some days of the week. Just check it out ahead of time if you want to see specific shows.

I pretty much visit exclusively in December now.

Yeah, light jacket weather during the day, heavier at night. It gets decently cold at night (depends on where you're from).

I love the Vdara. It's amazing and modern and very, very quiet. I think it's a steal. I've stayed in the parlor suite and the corner suite and both were fantastic. I'd stay there over anywhere else if my friends didn't insist upon the Cosmopolitan.

Some shows will go dark. Some restaurants will go dark. Most stuff stays open.

Thanks for the info.

Some friends stayed at the Cosmopolitan last year for DEFCON, and it seemed like what a frat kid would build if you gave him half a billion dollars. The buffet was legit though, up there with the one at Caesar's.

We'll probably go with Vdara then. The location is good, and the rooms seem great for the price.

I'd ask if staying at a non-casino hotel cuts down on potential perks or comps, but like I said, we're probably not going to gamble much at all anyway. All of those club cards are based on pretty strict math these days (play/lose X dollars, qualify for Y comp), right?

I'm going to Vegas for my bachelor party in early September. It's going to be a fairly tame group of dudes in their 30s. The general itinerary is to arrive on Friday, leave on Sunday. Does anyone have any suggestions for:

1. Good place to go go-karting?
2. How to get a group of 8 people or so to play poker together?

If you have your group all together, just talk to the person at the poker desk, let them know your situation, and see if they'll open a new table for you. 8 is usually enough that they'll open one if they have a dealer. You'll probably have a better shot at this at the lower end rooms (e.g., Harrah's, Flamingo, Mandalay Bay, Bally's, Westgate, Mirage, Excalibur). The Caesar's room is also pretty friendly to players, so they might work with you.

You'll have to choose one of their standard stakes (e.g. 1/2 NLHE). Note that you can't have private games in Vegas, so other people will be able to join your table, and you might get some other players ahead of you if there's a waitlist.

TI is super amenable to this sort of thing. That'd be my recommendation as well. I know floor people at Orleans, Flamingo, and Harrah's. They'll do it if they have space and spare dealers, but that's not always the case. Especially at the Orleans when the bad beat jackpot is bigger.

This one time the wife and I got into vegas on a late flight. And I sure as gently caress wasnt paying full rate at a good hotel for a place to sleep for six hours. (festival weekend so it was expensive)

I booked us at Americas Best Value Inn Las Vegas

This place is a solid 1-2 star place. Mold everywhere in the bathroom. It stank. Obvious hookers and drug deals in the carpark.
I lolled and stacked the furnature against the door while watching police do a face down bust right outside our room.

Wife cried herself to sleep. Wahhhh I dont wanna stay here im sccarreddddd.

In the morning the maid tried to open the door. Couldnt and then proceeded to try and shoulder it open. (No Knock)
A year or so later she was watching CSI vegas and I swear to god our room was in a external shot.

There's about 8 of us, so I might try to get a mixed poker game going at maybe TI or somewhere. I'll report back on whether we were successful!

Any good spots these days for live jazz? I’m thinking more like bars/clubs with good live music. Heck, back in the day as touristy as Napoleons was in the Paris they had some good performers and it was never crowded when we were there (I suppose why it died).

Pinball Hall of Fame for sure. Despite their namesake (and the reason I like to go there) they have a bunch of arcade games too. Plus it’s refreshing to have $20 in quarters last an afternoon after I’ve dropped a grand at the craps table. :cheeky:

Excalibur has a pretty decent arcade if you're on the south end of the strip. Circus Circus has one as well on the north end of the strip.

I wasn't very impressed when I visited Excalibur's arcade last year. It's mostly poorly-maintained ticket and prize machines, and the line for their medieval dinner thing goes right through the middle of the space.

Pinball Hall of Fame is amazing though. I spent about three hours there and would happily spend about twenty more.

I'd say its a better 'Vegas' experience that way, but depends on your preferences. With Taxi/Uber/Lyft you'd be fine, its not like that hotel is far, but I prefer to be able to walk around on the strip directly.

Hyatt owns a few hotels on the Strip, plus it has a partnership with MGM-owned hotels that let you earn and redeem points there too.

From the Hyatt FAQ:

quote:

At which M life Rewards destinations can I redeem World of Hyatt points?

You may redeem World of Hyatt points for free night awards at any of the participating M life Rewards destinations: Bellagio®, ARIA™, Vdara™, MGM Grand®, The Signature at MGM Grand®, Mandalay Bay®, Delano Las Vegas, The Mirage®, Monte Carlo™, New York New York™, Luxor® and Excalibur®.

(I think Monte Carlo is MGM-branded as of a few months ago.)

Might be worth checking if your friend is willing to switch the reservation to an on-Strip hotel.

Some of those are going to be expensive, but several of the older hotels (particularly Luxor) are hurting for business and generally have dirt cheap rooms, which should translate to less reward points required. They're hoping you'll stay there for the low room rate and then drop a bundle of cash in the casino.

Monte Carlo no longer exists but has always been an MGM property. It's now Park MGM. They're really hard up for business there during the remodel and it's dead center strip. Certainly worth looking into over Luxor or Mandalay. Aria is best of the bunch and rooms there aren't unreasonable with M Life.

So me and the wife were in Vegas for an A Perfect Circle concert but are total nerds so we made it to town a day early to participate in a league of legends tournament at the new Esports Arena @ the Luxor. They have a captain draft tournament every Thursday and this time there were barely enough for 2 teams. It was super fun and they refunded our entry fee and gave us 2 for 1 drink tickets and free play cards since nobody showed up. We still had a couple matches and thoroughly enjoyed it. Tentative recommendation, depending on the game you play.

What's the deal with smoking weed in Vegas? The only time I've been, it had been legalized, but I never smelled any, only cigarette stank on all the gaming floors. Are casinos tobacco smoking only, or are people in Vegas just not big potheads? Seemed strange to me, as at the time, we hadn't legalized it up here ( :canada: ), but you'd be hard pressed to not smell any in a lot of areas.
Same thing I noticed camping in Oregon. Big signs everywhere saying "get yer weed here!", not a whiff of dank in the campground, but at home camping I'd be more likely to smell weed than a campfire.

On another topic, is that limo idea a good deal for getting to the golden nugget too? Mrs. Chiller and I are heading down for our anniversary in July. Booked downtown because that seemed much more our style than overpriced food and drinks on the strip.

Somehow the gaming licences have some sorta tie to the feds.

You'll smell it on the streets all the time though. There are certainly potheads, just not smoking on the casino floor.

Yeah, there's no reason you can't get a limo if you want. Or just get a Lyft. The Nugget is easy to access by car.

There's somewhat reasonably priced food to be had on the strip, but you gotta find it. Downtown is fun, but I'm not sure what I would do there if I was there for more than 2 days. Luckily, it's pretty easy to Lyft from downtown to the strip.

In what ways do you mean they are determined to make it as terrible as possible? We stopped in for a couple days last year during a western US road trip, and just felt gouged every time we turned around on the strip. We're not into clubbing or dancing, and are well past our party days. We went down town for a night, and grabbed dinner at main street station. It immediately felt like this was more our style. I'd much rather have a place where I can sit down and have a conversation while drinking than have to shout over music. Cheap beer in the pub > cocktails in the club for us. We're looking to see a show or two (no real preference, so I guess a cirque, and maybe some stand up comedy), pay some money to watch the flashy, spinning lights (play some slots), maybe learn craps, drink by the pool, and have some decent meals that won't require draining my daughter's college fund. It's only a 3 day weekend (including travel time from Vancouver Island). Hope this works out

Since 5 years ago and just off the top of my head:

They made a bunch of stupid circles for the street performers that they supposedly have to rent out and stay inside of. As far as I can tell they only approve permits for old naked dudes in thongs and homeless people, and it makes the whole place feel like a weird zoo.

Banger Brewing can no longer give me beer in a to-go cup because the city requires some kind of new stupid permit that they weren't able/couldn't afford to get.

If you buy beer at a store they staple it into a brown paper bag because you aren't allowed to drink it unless you bought it at a casino or something. I always just take it outside and somewhat discretely remove the bag and drink it anyway, but this is still stupid and who knows if I could be given a ticket for doing this.

Most annoyingly you can no longer wander in and out of the shops with a drink you brought from somewhere else. They seem to have put the legal onus on the shops to enforce this so now you have employees standing on ladders on some kind of alcohol patrol shift, it's unbelievably stupid.

They seem to constantly be closing sidewalks down for construction for unnecessarily long periods of time to force you to walk by casinos, notably the Plaza.

They added UNBELIEVABLY obnoxious vocal alerts at the street crossings that constantly scream DONT WALK every 10 seconds, so loud that it drives me insane if I am within 50 feet of either street crossing that has one. I would honestly rather have some guy drumming on a home depot bucket follow me around all day than listen to that goddamn don't walk siren.

I just got five days vacation time approved for Halloween and would love to have my first trip to Vegas during that time. I haven't had a vacation in a decade and probably won't for a while after this since I'm gonna actually improve myself after this and go back to school, so I'm willing to spend extra money to have a premium experience. I don't want to spend high roller money but I still want to feel like I'm getting at least a little bit of the royal treatment. So I've been looking at the big famous places like Caesar's Palace and The Luxor but since I don't go anywhere I have no idea what's a good price for accommodations.

How do I not be a rube? I keep thinking 'boy a room with a jacuzzi sounds dope' but I'm pretty sure I don't actually need that to feel like I'm getting an amazing Vegas trip.

Jay recommended exactly what I was going to recommend. Both hotels are wonderful, and even if you don't spring for the super nice suites, their standard rooms are very nice. Wynn is also a good option.

Luxor is a really cool building to see, but it's like, 25 years old, and definitely shows its age, even after the remodel. It's also on the older part of the strip. Aria and Cosmo are more central.

Caesar's and Bellagio are also nice, but you'll get more bang for your buck (and better food options) at Aria and Cosmo.

I was underwhelmed by Aria's food options. They seemed overpriced even for the Strip, and none of it was particularly better than other things I found nearby.

I stayed at the Vdara last trip (another good option if you don't smoke and don't need a casino literally right downstairs), but I spent most of my near-hotel time in the Cosmo next door. I really enjoy the odd quirkiness of that place, and they have some great restaurants, too. My wife and I hit China Poblano three or four times during our visit.
