I feel like law enforcement treats child porn busts like fish stories. It's not like anyone's actually going to check to see how much is there.

No, but that's a few dozen external hard drives' worth of child porn. At some point you just want to get caught

They actually catalog it to identify new victims/perpetrators/crime scenes. All csi with background stuff like bedsheet thread counts, rare wallpapers, car models, anything. It's honestly really impressive.

Europol posts items for the public to identify on this page. The images are censored, obviously, but they can still be disturbing like when there’s a bedroom with a big white box over the bed, so don’t say I didn’t warn you.

It's one of the big drivers behind the GCHQ using machine learning technologies because otherwise a person has to sit down and scrutinise every single one of those photos, cross reference it against the database, try to identify the victim etc.

Apparently a few of those people (a tiny minority obviously) have turned out to be pedophiles themselves. It makes sense, has to be a dream job for them, assuming you're also devoid of human empathy.

Part of me hopes that he was "merely" caught with a lot of it and that they're just reporting the total capacity of all the storage media they seized. Like that would be an unimaginable amount of porn even if it was non-reprehensible adult porn.

It's not a punishment assignment either. People do volunteer to work in those units because they genuinely want to help stop this horrible thing that's happening, and last only a few weeks at most.

There's a goon here who used to do that kind of stuff professionally and he always had my respect for that. There have also been several goons who did that on an amateur level, but we don't talk about them or when they were mods.

I busted a guy looking at CP when I was working at an Internet Cafe in the early 2000s. I went upstairs to get his dishes and he'd gone to the bathroom and left it open on his screen. You can't unsee these things. I called the cops, they showed up in about 30 seconds (HQ was across the street) and caught the guy red handed. The next day I got fired for "letting the police steal the computer" and I should "have just asked him to leave".

I was fixing a friends computer back in high school when I chanced upon all his subscribed usenet categories. I didn't see any images, but I quickly got the hell out of there and dropped him like a bad habit. I probably should have reported it, but I was so freaked out at the time I just needed to get the gently caress out of his place.

This makes me remember that movie with Donald Sutherland about the soviet police officer who hunted a pedofilic serial killer for like 28 years (don't remember the number, but it was something mind boggling). He caught him in the end. And this is the darkest derail. It's all so more haunting being in the happiest silly thread.
