if there weren't buckets of dumb money floating around it would be a lot harder to make money in the stock market

margin can be used to lower risk too, or as a way to make a purchase that will be paid off with your next dividend but all the good funnies come from someone with $5,000 buying $100,000 in tesla single-stock futures

yeah options and margin trading were originally ways to do small scale hedging like I buy $100 mil of stock A but I get a $5 mil put option in case it goes to poo poo but then some coked out financial wizards in the 70s were like "hey what if the risky part was the whole investment???" and the rest is history

I mean you'd used to have to spend years on a waiting list before being granted the opportunity for Elon to take 70k of your money and set it on fire. Now you can just buy TSLA anytime that idiot tweets. And people say he doesn't innovate!

you can lock yourself out of your tesla if youre not in cellphone range and you only have the app to get in to the car yes it will let you get in and drive away without the key fob if you have the app tell it to

fart simpson posted:i didnt make that much until i graduated college lol dad always tells the story of how he was offered to work in the steel factory ("the steelworks") as a legitimate option if he wanted to drop out of high school and it was good pay + full ride benefits + retirement + massive lay off bonus when he would have inevitably been made redundant when the factory shutdown some 20 odd years later. He didn't do it because the idea of working in a steel factory for his entire adult life spooked him into doing better at school nowadays people with a high school degree get to work 8pm -> 2am slinging drinks for minimum wage and that's if they're lucky My son is due to be born in a couple of months and it's the biggest thing I'm scared for him, he will grow up with great parents and a lot of love/support and I'm not sure if it's going to mean poo poo in another two decades

in another two decades things will be very different, thanks to the inevitable collapse of the neoliberal order due to climate change and massive increases in resource competition it will either usher in a new wave of sensible, technocratic democratic socialism or we’ll be stuck in a permanent Mad Max libertarian hellscape as everything falls apart around us
