What's to hate? Yelled at two players five years ago and has been branded the Fun Police for all eternity despite showing no indication that he wasn't simply having a curmudgeonly couple of weeks.

Ken Giles
Team: Toronto Blue Jays
Debut: June 12, 2014

What's to hate? He's not having a very good year, and he's a bit unhinged. After saying "gently caress you" to AJ Hinch after getting pulled from a game he was sinking, the Jays can deal with him now.

What's to love? Salvy is quite possibly the most likable guy in baseball. He is adorability incarnate.

He adds so much cuteness to this cold, dark world. Players love him, fans love him, everybody loves him.

Seriously, there are so many hugging GIFs.

He's a good enough catcher, of course -- six-time All-Star, four-time Gold Glove recipient, etc. -- but his attitude/demeanor almost certainly appeals more universally than his skill level.

Salvy was my top pick, I guess someone else voted for him too. Seriously not just a great player, but a really great person. I think the reason he ended up winning out on a tight race for my number one was thinking "if I could spend the day hanging out with a current baseball player, who would it be?" and it was pretty obviously him.

Carlos Martínez
Team: St. Louis Cardinals
Debut: May 3, 2013

What's to love? There is a whole lobbying post made by Pancakes that says it all, really, and it's so good that I'm not going to waste my time and yours trying to paraphrase it.

Pancakes posted:

I know that everyone hates the Cardinals. I'm not going to try to persuade you to love the Cardinals as an organization. But friends, please consider welcoming Carlos Martinez into your heart.

Carlos is 26 years old, has been on the Cardinals since 2013 and has been a fan favorite for years. Most people know Carlos primarily because of his larger-than-life personality. Carlos has a history of entertaining himself in the dugout...

As well as others.

He's the team's #1 cheerleader on days when he's not pitching...

And is glorious to watch when it's his turn in the rotation.

He loves his teammates...

And he loves animals.

The amazing thing about Carlos, more than his talent or his sense of humor, is the story of Carlos. He wrote a piece called Becoming a Cardinal for the Players Tribune that I highly encourage you to read. A quick TL,DR for you:

Carlos is from one of the poorest areas of the Dominican Republic. His mother died when he was 8 months old and he never knew his father. His grandmother raised him in a two-room house containing 7 people in abject poverty. Carlos originally studied to be a priest but couldn't complete his time in the seminary because of an irregularity with his birth certificate. Because his mother hadn't registered his birth before she died his uncle had used another child's birth certificate when Carlos needed paperwork as a child.

Carlos had to leave the seminary, took up baseball and left home in part to ease the financial burden on grandmother, since if he was traveling she wouldn't have to feed him. When he was 16 he was playing in Boston's academy as a shortstop when he was spotted pitching by David Ortiz and Pedro Martinez, who saw him hitting in the 90's on the gun and told him to focus specifically on his pitching. Carlos was signed by the Red Sox but the irregularity with his birth certificate resulted in his contract being voided and a one-year suspension. He ultimately used DNA testing to prove who he was and was signed by the Cardinals. When he first signed with the Cardinals one of the first things he did was buy his grandmother a house in a nice neighborhood.

Since then he's founded the Tsunami Waves Foundation, which focuses on helping underprivileged children. Beyond the economic assistance and mission work, he's also helped bring a 17-year-old from the DR with leukemia, Camille Fernandez, to St. Louis to get medical treatment.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=husMNmVtB1U

Carlos overcame incredible childhood adversity, brought himself and his family out of poverty with his skill and now works to help others while playing the game with talent, enthusiasm and humor. Carlos is wonderful. :allears:

If that's not enough, he's also got style...

And his big controversy was when people found out his Twitter feed had all his favorite porn on it (I won't add the NSFW link to this post but the story's easy to find). I've also personally seen him pay Jeremy Hazelbaker $15 to eat a bug.

Thank you for loving Carlos.

Hunter Strickland
Team: San Francisco Giants
Debut: September 1, 2014

What's to hate? If there's anything we should have learned from Johnny Cueto's persistence in the most hated list, it's that SAS does not forgive players for deliberately hurting each other. This man assaulted Bryce Harper and ended Michael Morse's career because Harper hit two home runs off him in the 2014 NLDS, which the Giants ended up winning anyway. Ridiculous and absurd, and we'll never let it go.

Daniel Murphy
Team: Washington Nationals Chicago Cubs
Debut: August 2, 2008

What's to hate? Daniel Murphy thinks that same-gender sexual attraction is a "lifestyle", and he "disagrees" with it, whatever that loving means. Not only that, but when he got called out on the bigoted judgmentalness of his statement, instead of apologizing, he decided he was never going to talk about not-baseball again.

Oh, except that he totally talked about it again, and it was nothing but trying to cover his own ignorant bigoted rear end. gently caress this guy, and gently caress people like him.

Jacob deGrom
Team: New York Mets
Debut: May 15, 2014

What's to love? Jacob deGrom has been described as "Sunshine Superman" as SNY's Gary Cohen, and it bugs the gently caress out of me that it hasn't stuck. It is literally the perfect way to describe a pitcher whose career day game ERA is in the mid-1s. Back when Jacob "dayGrom" deGrom had long hair, I even made a crude Paint version of deGrom which was just a Bellsprout with squiggly brown lines for hair. It's accurate.

Of course, the day is not the only time in which Jacob deGrom flourishes. He has an unbelievable 1.71 ERA for 2018, with Max Scherzer being a distant second at 2.11 (iirc). Despite the fact that the Mets are downright determined to sabotage him at every turn (deGrom's win-loss record for the year is 8-8, despite his impeccable performance), he keeps his head up and gets poo poo done. He should absolutely get the NL Cy Young this year -- he has been a gem.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdvKPHF8DmQ

He seems like an easygoing reasonable teammate as well, not only because he hasn't flat-out murdered anyone for ruining any of the many MANY games that he should have won this year, but also because he's kind of a goofball.

Need I say more? This guy is a joy to behold on so many levels. :allears:

Unfortunately he seems to be nearing the end of his rope, being 39 years old and struggling with persistent hamstring injuries lately. That said, he has dealt with (seemingly) far worse, and it didn't stop him before, so we can only wait and see. Hopefully he doesn't pull all his neck muscles trying to get out of the way of someone touching his head though.

What's to love? The batflip to end all batflips.

Seriously, maybe my memory isn't ENTIRELY accurate -- after all, I wasn't able to focus on baseball consistently until around 2014 -- but Joey Bats's batflip was such a huge deal that it sparked a ton of debates about how acceptable batflips are (answer: completely), and helped expose a bunch of people's curmudgeonly "play the game the white right way" bullshit.

He's entering his twilight years, and as a result there are Mets fans out there who are complaining that the team is prioritizing him over the team's prospects. That said, he's doing fairly well this year, so it's hard to be TOO upset (at least, imho).
