1500 words in TD https://thunderdome.cc/?story=6598&title=Messiah+and+the+Devout rewrote an old story, no idea how much is still the same from the first draft but it's nearly twice as long now and I did a lot of editing (and need to do a lot more...). Gonna count that as 2k words.  working on draft 3 of another short story, got about 3200 words into that all in all, well over 5K words  for 5k in july

Question: sebmojo is who we have to satisfy, so only sebmojo needs to see it, right? I’m not sure I want to share widely if I write, because 1) The only thing I’ve written in 20 years is a short story I wrote a few weeks ago and posted in the submission thread, which no one read (or at least no one commented on) 2) I’m not a very good fiction writer I want to write something, but being both out of practice, and not very good to start with, makes me kind of reluctant to do it if I’m going to have to widely share the result.

Naw, just post a screen shot of your wordcount. I can recommend thunderdome once you've got your feet wet, its a great way to get over worrying and get ink on the page. I'll have a look at your story, too.... Oh right, i remember that one I think. Pleasant but eh, iirc. A little 'why are you telling me this?' So this will sound silly, but this is what a writer friend of mine does, and I've found it strangely helpful too: Start a story badly. Or write something in early on that is intentionally very dumb and bad, like a character doing something totally unmotivated or just an awfully constructed sentence or something. Then tell yourself, "eh I'll fix it in the edit." Then keep writing, and when you're worried about whether the story is good or if you're starting it right or if you're ending it right, just tell yourself "eh I'll fix it in the edit." It's totally a dumb mental trick thing, but for me it got me over my perfectionist tendencies. "Pre-marring" the story like this kind of forces me to accept that it's not going to be right until I do some edit passes anyway, and that I may as well just pound keys until its done, since I won't know what the final product looks like when I start it.

confession cuz im not sure how cool this is i threw out a shitload of words in favour of a new draft with a more cohesive action-y plot with most of the ideas recycled. like 70k words gone. in total i retained like 11k words. this felt really important, i was hating that first draft and working on it and it was just a bloated slog i figure i can have a 50k draft done by the end of the next month. will toxx for that in my next post here. yeah e: not doing too hot as a writer rn lol take the moon fucked around with this message at 21:50 on Aug 24, 2018 |
