There were several moments where I felt like I only understood what was going on because I had watched the more complete tv adaptation, yeah. The central theme of the series is linked with the tragedy of being caught in circumstances beyond your control. The movie being so abridged limits the emotional impact it can convey for the pivotal scenes since it cuts a lot of buildup and character development. For instance, my favorite character in the series is the main antagonist, Keith Anyan. I love seeing him start as the ruthless, obedient solider type and along the way struggle with his growing empathy that arises from the off-kilter emotional bonds he forms with a very small number of people. And I also like reading him as gay, because he’s the kind of guy who takes the crystallized blood of a deceased friend and keeps it on him as an earring. I would say Terra e is my favorite “space adventure” anime, but it being the only shoujo variant I’ve seen may not make for a very fair comparison.
