Today's deGrom watch: 6 IP, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, ND, and for the second start in a row the only run support he got was one he drove in himself.

e: also 25 straight starts allowing 3 runs or fewer which is a live ball record.

Adam Frazier is definitely getting some help from the patron saint of Babip, but the home runs and doubles are real enough and he's really hitting the hell out of the ball.

He's been much, much better in the field this year compared to last but that's not saying a whole lot. Not sure his production will last but he's a lot of fun to watch bat right now.

here's a pairing for that, good to see that the PA is serious about unfucking the mess that Clark made

quote:

And while that might not be a problem in and of itself — a collective bargaining agreement is a massive undertaking with lots of lawyers involved on both sides — there’s no doubting that the addition of Meyer represents a shift in the union’s approach. If the labor negotiations between MLB and the MLBPA are a knife fight, Meyer is the gun.

Ke'Bryan Hayes is listed on Baseball America's hottest prospects this week. I think he's the first actually exciting infield prospect for the Bucs since Pedro Alvarez. He put up impressive hitting numbers at AA-Altoona this year and is apparently an incredible defensive third baseman.

I'm curious to see how Kevin Kramer swings the bat, I think he got the call to the big leagues last night though I haven't seen official confirmation. He had troubling strikeout numbers but nice power & .856 OPS this year at AAA-Indianapolis. He mostly played second base but put in some time at shortstop as well...if he can field the position at all and his batting numbers can translate to the majors (doubtful) I'd rather see him there than Newman, who is bad.

I guess the tendons healed a little too tight

I think Elias Diaz could be an All Star next year tbh. He's swatting .286 /.337 / .453, with BABIP of .297 so I don't think it's a fluke.

Paul Sporer @ Fangraphs has a deep dive up interrogating Trevor Williams's Unstoppable and Entirely Sustainable Cy Young-quality Second Half

sporer posted:

At his best, he’s working the corners, going high-low with a solid four-pitch arsenal, and not giving in to batters, comfortable to issue a walk and take on the next battle instead of dropping a 91 mph meatball down the middle in a 3-ball count that could be sent 450 feet the other way. Let me be clear about one thing: I’m not here to cut down Williams’ success. He’s definitely riding hot and this run no doubt includes a large dose of unsustainable good fortune, but he is contributing to this success, too. The main reason I’ve been so fascinated by this run and wanted to do a deep-dive on it was because I wanted to see if I was missing anything(s).

I think when there isn’t a smoking gun change fostering a run of success, it’s more immediately dismissed as blind luck which is both simplistic and a bit foolish. It remains wise to bet against him as a sub-3.00 ERA guy let alone the sub-1.00 guy we’ve seen since just before the break, but this is also part of what’s great about baseball. It doesn’t always go according xwOBA.

Alex Stumpf, an occasional Fangraphs contributor, put up a post on August 14th that basically says Williams is doing well because he's been exceptionally good at painting the corners and consistently hitting the very edges of the strike zone.

I was quite surprised to learn that both Fangraphs and Baseball Reference agree that his first 7 full years (where he got votes for MVP in 6 years and won ROY in the other) were worth around 20 WAR.

Anybody else get an MLB At-Bat notification just now with a description that reads something like "Runner at first. Batter walks. Runner called out at second. WHAT?" The video it links to, I didn't even catch what game it was but it appeared to be a completely routine walk with a runner on first going on the pitch, not called out, so what was that about?
