Thanks for that term, I hadn't read about Geek Social Fallacies before.

There's a lot of progressive voices I think - especially in entertainment - who haven't realised that they're carrying massive blindspots regarding race and gender especially and should just shut up and let better able people pick up the torch. That whole Michael Ian Black shitshow on twitter is one example. Navigating the fragility around not having a relevant opinion on an issue despite having a massive platform is going to be super important for a lot of celebrities.

I guess a history of assaulting fifteen (plus?) different men and boys across a span of decades was a “whoopsie,” and Spacey should be given the opportunity to put the trauma he had suffered in the allegations coming to light behind him, and move on with his life. It’s whats fair.

Robin Wright just handially killed whatever modicum of interest I might have had in “her” season of House Of Cards.

Not really. There's a reason other journalists had some stuff to say about Babe.net and their reporting of the encounter. I still think Ansari is in the wrong, and reading it again there are details I had forgotten about that paint him as a piece of poo poo so calling it a confusing sexual encounter is my stupid mistake, but I still think they're guilty of rushing a story out for clicks and not asking questions that any journalist worth their salt would ask because they know the people reading the story will ask the same thing.

the months following this were mostly composed of me attempting to be a friend while constantly thinking i was doing something wrong, and john generally not responding unless he was having a vulnerable moment. finally, i allowed myself to realize that he was using me.

and then, because it was relevant, he asked me my pronouns. i said, “you little poo poo, i told you my pronouns when i met you and you went off on a whole spiel about how i shouldn’t label myself.” he stuttered for a second, then said, “you’re right, you’re absolutely right.” i thanked him because there was something irrationally satisfying about john telling me i was right, about anything.

Twentieth Century Fox was just days away from locking picture on “The Predator” when an urgent note came in: Delete the scene featuring Steven Wilder Striegel.

Striegel, 47, didn’t have a big role in his longtime friend Shane Black’s reboot of the sci-fi thriller — just a three-page scene shared with actress Olivia Munn.

But last month, Munn learned that Striegel is a registered sex offender who pleaded guilty in 2010 after facing allegations that he attempted to lure a 14-year-old female into a sexual relationship via the internet. When Munn shared the information with Fox on Aug. 15, studio executives quickly decided to excise him from the movie.
...
Striegel served six months in jail after pleading guilty to two felonies — risk of injury to a child and enticing a minor by computer. The first role he landed after his release was in Black’s 2013 film, “Iron Man 3.” Three years later, he got another part in one of the filmmaker’s projects, the crime caper “The Nice Guys.” In 2016, Black told GQ that he was planning to produce a heist film “by my friend Steve Wilder.”

Black defended his decision to cast Striegel in a small part in “The Predator” as a jogger who repeatedly hits on Munn’s character.

“I personally chose to help a friend,” Black said in a written statement to The Times. “I can understand others might disapprove, as his conviction was on a sensitive charge and not to be taken lightly.”

Awesome that it fell to Olivia Munn to have to "inform" Fox about this. Something tells me they knew about it before and only made a move because Munn talking about it in the press would've been a bad look.

Guy's undeniably a creep, Shane Black's defense of him is gross and problematic, and to put him in any kind of sexually charged scene with a woman who has come out with her own story of sexual assault is incredibly lovely.

But: guy did time for his crime, it wasn't buried and it wasn't directly related to his acting work. Should he not get to work again because he's a sex offender?

Whether he works again is a decision every potential employer has to make their own decision about. So to make some grand pronouncement about whether he "ever gets to work again" is meaningless, he'll work again or not based on how his future employers feel about the fact that he tried to have sex with a child.

So if you're so interested in finding out whether a sex offender will get to work again, why don't you answer the question for yourself. Would you want to hire him?

Exactly, when I say "future employers", there is no presumption that working in show business is some sort of entitlement. Get a job if you can, doesn't mean Hollywood is required to keep your career afloat just because you want to be an actor. Not that this guy was exactly lighting the world on fire with his acting jobs anyway.

Fox and Wilder put out a statement about it. Fox claims that they didn’t know due to laws that impede background checks on actors (there actually aren’t any such laws) and Wilder says the girl was a problemed relative he reached out to offer help and ended up falling for her. He says nothing physical happened but the girl says it definitely did.
