Yep. I just remembered - I haven’t been able to bring myself to buy Raiders of the Lost Ark on BD because I don’t like the color timing. gently caress, that one hurts to not have. It’s a loving perfect film. And to be fair, it was hardly “poo poo out without a second thought”. It was most likely given an extensive and expensive DI. It is, after all, a marquee title.

I remember listening to the audio commentary on Bad Lieutenant, and a lot of it is Abel Ferrara and his DP complaining about how the film looks nothing like it's supposed to. They weren't allowed to supervise it whatsoever. drat shame.

This is why I'm happy to support fan restorations. They've restored both this and JURASSIC PARK to how they should've been (The latter somehow manages to gain a whole colour tint that wasn't present on the original release). They also restored THE MATRIX to the original colours and not whatever the Blu-Ray did.

One of the worst offenders is DO THE RIGHT THING, which takes what's supposed to be a blazing hot day and makes it look overcast.

so i had an idiot thought in the shower and i'm curious as hell now: would it, in theory, be possible to have a 35mm print struck of a given movie based off its 4K UHD release, and have it look basically indistinguishable from a regular theatrical print?

i fully realize nobody in their right mind would do this, but i still wanna know

I am aware of all of those fan works. ;)

Yup, forgot about Do the Right Thing, that’s another one I just won’t buy in its current state. I have limited resources for Blu-Ray purchases - the ones I end up buying are things like Terminator and Robocop and Spielberg, Carpenter, Raimi, Coens, Hitchcock, a few other “big” Hollywood directors and Pixar for whatever reasons, so as much as I’d like to flesh out my collection (currently hovering around 200 titles) with all the great Euro or obscure titles that labels like MoC etc specialize in and do right by, I can’t. So arguments that there are more “good” BDs out there than bad don’t sway me. I want poo poo like Raiders, and I want them done right.

This is what the studios do. They film out their 4K DI to create a new archival analog master. And it looks “better” than any original theatrical release print did, but it also looks “different” so “basically indistinguishable” isn’t the right way to describe it.

It's exactly Sony's usual SOP.

For Lawrence of Arabia, they scanned the 65mm camera negative at 8K. All restoration workflow in 4K. After the final master was completed, they output to a new 65mm negative. Which replaces the photochemically produced 65mm dupe negative from 1988, as well as obviously end any need for the original to be touched again. From that new 65mm negative, which is effectively a clone of the camera negative in terms of image quality, they made the usual preservation elements - 65mm B&W color separations, interpositives, and dupe negatives. And from the dupe negative, they've made new 70mm prints.

WB occasionally goes a step further. When they did Doctor Zhivago, they output a new dupe negative "as is" as an exact clone of the camera negative, as well as one after restoration.

Yeah, I get having the early pre-HD seasons DVD only, but it’s really awkward having seasons 1-4 DVD, 5-8 and Xmas special on Blu-Ray, then 9-12 on DVD again. Is it that much of a cost savings for them?

Season 12 doesn't even have a physical release and a couple of those are made on demand DVDs as well.

I'm still in awe that Bat Pussy is on Blu-ray. I remember getting it when I traded dubbed VHS tapes with people decades ago.

Back in the AV Maniacs days, someone there sent me Bat Pussy stickers, Bat Pussy magnets and a Bat Pussy mask, which has been worn by myself, my wife and our cat.

I had a triple movie DVD with The Zodiac Killer (or it might've been another contemporary Zodiac exploitation movie) and the thing I remember most was that for the credits the camera would rack focus between a still image and credit printed on some transparent sheet in front of them. It was a really neat effect.

edit: It was the Australian version of this

Might've been one other the other two movies.

Kino is releasing Pioneers: Early Women Filmmakers on Nov. 20.

It'll be a six-disc set with twenty-eight hours of films ranging from 1911-1929 - over 50 titles. There will be a disc each devoted to the work of Alice Guy-Blache and Lois Weber. Also will feature films by Mabel Normand, Grace Cunard, Dorothy Davenport, and Alla Nazimova. Also will include a 80 page booklet.

This was originally a Kickstarter project like their excellent Pioneers of Early African-American Cinema set. They're apparently only having one film that overlaps with Flicker Alley's 3-disc set from last year (Lois Weber's Suspense).

Releases the same day as the Criterion Bergman set, and three days after my friend flies back from the US :( that's gonna be an expensive month.

Is the Criterion release Breakfast Club blu-ray the same transfer as the 30th anniversary blu-ray? And if it isn't, is it noticeable enough an improvement that it'd be worth paying the Criterion price and not the $5.99 that the 30th anniversary goes for? I'm not interested in bonus features, just want to watch the movie.

It's the same transfer but Criterion has a slightly better encoding. You can see the (marginal) difference at Caps-a-holic: http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=11241&d2=9287&c=3754

If you don't care about special features, you're better off just going with the 30th anniversary version.

Man when DVD was start starting I would watch extras all the time. Now I haven't watch them in years, even the deleted scenes. Probably blame the Criterion Rock release, as I figure to watch the commentary for this action movie I like and it a very depressing one talking about how easily we can all die if the virus stored ever get out.

When I began collecting DVDs in 2000 I would religiously go through every single feature on the disc, and I wouldn't call it "complete" until I had watched everything. I'd even sit and watch the myriad tv spots that were basically the same ad five or six times in a row.

Nowadays I'm not too interested in the fluff extras. Give me audio commentaries from directors or historians, and full length docs and I'm a happy person.

Honestly my interest in the extras came from wanting to know how they pulled off various effects. Nowadays with current movies that's very rarely interesting. Every once in a while you get a movie like The Dark Knight or Blade Runner 2049 that does rad stuff with miniatures, but that's about it.

The only extras I make a point of watching are Criterion ones, usually. If I have time after watching a film I sometimes go through some extras, especially if they are short, but usually after watching a 2 hour movie I don't want to sit and watch another couple hours of extra features. I just watched Return of the Living Dead III the other day and there are several 30 minute extras, who has time for that?
