welp i'm finally at the point in fighterz where literally every ranked match i play is me getting completely hilariously bodied by people with godlike reaction time and none of the stuff i was doing before works at all anymore. if this was a console game now would probably be the time for me to sell it but i'm an idiot and bought it on pc

SC has never been an especially technical fighter but I think SC2 was played for many years at a competitive level. SC5 might have also been a flash in the circuit for awhile but I stopped paying attention to the series by then.

sc has always been a buggy series,

the general game flow is that horizontals beat steps, steps beat verticals, and verticals beat horizontals

stepguard beats both types of attacks by sidestepping and option selecting it with a guard, its weakness is lows and grabs

theres also a bug in like 3 of the games (2g/22g) where you can cancel out of all sorts of recovery, like the recovery given to you from being guard impacted

imo soul calibur games are not so good by design. pressing buttons carries with it a risk that is only worth risking because the round timer is short and force you to act. what purpose is there in pressing a button when the cards are stacked against you so heavily? in this way its like 3s, a mystics only experience. the characters tend to have a hundred moves but there are only 3 real options out of this hundred at neutral per character. i tend to get the same existential crisis feeling in both SC and 3s, where there is a distinct crippling feeling that the majority of my options are completely useless and any button I press will be nullified.

I'm looking forward to the next game

my strategies are lacking two things

one is any kind of defensive options, which, uh, FZ doesn't have. once you're in a combo, lol gently caress you. this is a flaw with DBFZ basically everyone acknowledges.

two is knowledge of how to do 50%+ combos. i rely mostly on autocombos, which work technically but I need like 20 of them to nuke a character unless i'm playing very very specific teams, whereas the players above me in skill need one combo. two if i'm very lucky.

combined, this means unless i am on some insane beast mode fuckery where they can't even hit me, i lose. period. no matter who i'm playing, no matter who they're playing.

unless my reaction time magically gets sharp enough for me to be able to do the same kind of manual combos as the people i'm matched with, playing the game will be roughly akin to putting my hand on a hot stove. so i'm done with it.

I don't think combos are a question of reaction time, it's just practice. If its not something you want to do yeah not much to be done.

26 hours in is still a beginner for a fighting game, but if you don't want to keep playing that's it i guess.

you were really close. you had said that you could no longer win online. you even wrote up a list of the things stopping you from winning, effectively creating a framework for improvement. but this is your response to someone encouraging you to practice? i dont think anyone here is saying its a crime to stop playing, but i agree with your analysis here, it definitely seems like a mistake to press on

seriously the autocombos in dbfz are some loving devil poo poo because the game basically tries to teach you to use them as much as possible, and to make you think that they're your B&Bs

and then the second you hit Android rank you find out you're Wimp Lo and they trained you wrong, as a joke, because all the autocombos suck rear end

out of the things stopping me from winning, one is inherent to the game and the other is... theoretically improvable but is going to be very very long and very very unfun because i have a literally broken body and old man reflexes.

Reactions matter much less than you think. Everyone gets opened up by dumb, extremely blockable bullshit. Prediction is far more important and that comes with experience. Fighting games are, ironically, old man games and a lot of the "faster" games have scenes with average ages near or in the 30s.

As far as execution goes, I've also got dumb disabled hands. The best combo is the one you can do. This improves over time but trying to push yourself way outside your bounds all the time just gets you in the mental state you're in now. When I'm learning a game I just do some easy poo poo and try to get the real poo poo a few times per match.

IDK how the combo system works in DBFZ, but figuring out that you could double-tap buttons helped me a ton when I was learning combos in SF and KOF.

I recently came off of a slump of not playing any fighters because I got discouraged at getting brutally owned by literally everyone in my local scene. It sucks but it's just one of those filters that you either do or don't go through on the way to getting better at these games. DBFZ stopped being fun after I got over how beautiful the game looked and how there were basically no defensive options other than blocking. If you're really not feeling a game then there is literally no reason to keep playing it. I dropped dbfz and i don't regret it for a minute because I get more game time to either play a more enjoyable fighter or a non fighting game instead of whatever the flavor of the month happens to be.

Also merkava's 4B elbow drop is the best feeling button he has. imo.

If it's encouraging at all you can probably get the "universal BnB" down pretty quick in training mode and it does pretty close to optimal damage for most characters for very little effort. Chunked out in babby notation it's:

crouch M, M -> jump cancel L, M -> jump cancel L, M, 2H, H -> L, M, H -> land and do a super

Boom there's like +40% damage and corner carry long as your dudes have an air H that smashes them into the ground. If you're done with the game, cool, but just a heads up DBZF has that pretty easy next step combo that'll carry you just as much farther up as the autocombos have gotten ya so far.

(optional light attacks)crouch m, m, jump cancel, LL down H then mash H to superdash, LL down H jump cancel, LLL

Leads to sliding knockdown with 75% of the characters and some characters do LLS (special) for more damage if in the corner.

Some of the combo tutorials kinda hint at this BNB but nothing in the game flatout teaches you the optimal one that gets meterless 40% anywhere on screen, nor does it teach you the proper combos after vanish confirms. But yeah, a burst mechanic or something would be so loving nice as most of the game is just people taking turns doing this BNB

I haven’t tried the bbtag demo yet but I wish bb or unist had anything really appealing to me on the character list and aesthetics and all that. I mean they both have some weird occulty supernatural vibes and I love that but eh. I don’t know, maybe I haven’t looked deep enough.

Also the fact that it’s expected to use discord for matches pushes me away. I just wanna smash quick match and wait in training mode.

Blazblue has the most aggressively unappealing character design of any fighting game, which is remarkable because just next door you have Guilty Gear whose characters are so good they make the 2000s era hundred-belt buckles aesthetic work.
