Dr. Tim Whatley posted:Every time I go I tell them I don’t use self checkout because I prefer people to have jobs and they thank me and then I go check out with my man Jerome. I can see this at other stores, but I want to believe that Costco would not only pass the savings on to the consumer, but pay their other employees more to compensate. I work union jobs and they all hate self checkout for that reason.

I don't know, not to speak ill of the sacred church, but I worked there back in 2000 and they put me on cart duty. The tools were a simple rope with a hook on it and we had to drag 10 carts back to the front at a time. I quit pretty soon later as I didn't want to do that back breaking work in the hot SoCal sun. For many years I saw other older gentlemen who I worked on do the same thing for the better part of 15 years before they finally bought those motorized shopping cart collectors. They aren't always the fastest to adapt new technology

Ok but does it really make sense to hate efficiency? If you must hate someone in this scenario, hate the society that penalizes its own workers when new technology is created. PS the limited edition Japanese collaboration Chivas Regal is on clearance right now if anyone wants it. I think it was 20 bucks. Great deal.

Looks like Costco is finally going to be the cheapest place to get some KO2 tires this time, they've been beaten by a local 4x4 place here in Florida both times before. I can't have them install the things as they won't touch my cars, but hey! Savings all the same!

Greetings brothers and sisters, and listen to my tale of caution. On leaving Costco yesterday for a quick $200 just essentials run, I stopped to get an italian sausage sandwich (with sausage and peppers). After I paid, I was told that they actually didn't have any ready and they were just starting to cook them, and I could wait 10 minutes or just get 2 hot dogs right now. I ended up taking the 2 dogs because I had a ton of frozen stuff and really didn't want to wait. My plan was to eat one dog, then give the second dog to the homeless guy who hangs out by the traffic light near my apartment. So I ate my dog, and turns out, the homeless guy wasn't there today. The siren's call of the hot dog was just too much. I told myself I'd just eat one bite. JUST ONE BITE. Which turned to two, which turned into the entire second hot dog. It's now the next day and my burps still smell like hot dog. I swelled up from all that sodium so much I had trouble getting my ring off, and my stomach was in knots the entire night. And my bowel movements. Oh god, the poop. The endless poop. Please heed my tale of warning. Do not overindulge. I'm a headache short of a really nasty hangover right now.

Bought some more Dublin cheese though, two king sized pillows for $17, and protein shakes were on sale so I bought two boxes of those. Also finally bought a jumbo box of eggo waffles even though it takes up half my freezer because pregnancy cravings are a weird thing, and those delicious spinach ravioli for those nights I don't feel like cooking. I think somewhere in there was some fruits and vegetables too but who gives a poo poo about that.

Question, are those coupon mailers actually coupons or just ads showing what currently has big discounts? I threw mine out thinking it was just a monthly ad. Did I just miss out on savings from our lord? Also, fun tidbit: I work for a staffing agency that supplies the company that makes the Costco pizzas. The pizza making facility is really awesome on a technical level but poorly managed so I hope there is no shortage of pizzas any time soon

I never said I hated self checkout, but the union mindset is give them an inch and they'll take a mile, also it kinda sucks that instead of having 5-16 lines of great baggers has slimmed down to one line open that sells smokes and a mess at self checkout.

buncha grocery stores in my area had self checkout but eventually abandoned them because they were slower and created more work for the employees. I personally do like self checkout cause I tend to shop regularly and only ever really use a handbasket, but I dunno if they're really an improvement with how dumb people are in general + idiots with a full cart clogging up the machines thinking they'd somehow be faster than an actual cashier even if they somehow managed to not fuckup any of their weight based purchases. They could put up signs I guess but no one ever pays attention to them with express lanes so I doubt they would with self checkout either.

The self checkout at my local usually only has one or two people using it, but I also avoid going at busy times if I can help it. It works really well for buying one or two items, but I think most people are ringing up significantly more things and stay away.

The only thing self checkout is good for is when you have one or two items and just want to get the gently caress out right now. There is no such thing as one or two items at Costco so it makes no sense. I worked at BJ's way back in college and we had a self checkout there. It was a nightmare.

I'm pretty sure a nearby location (Lewisville, TX Costco) had self-checkout, and now they don't. I used to stop by this one on the way home from work for rotisserie chickens, and it was the fastest way to get out of the store. It's possible they just roped them off and put carts in front of them for ~reasons~ and I didn't see them, but this may be a sign that not all of Costco is trending towards self-checkout. EDIT: even if they're still there i'm not going to use them as solidarity to my costco cashier peeps.
