When eren first became a titan in trost, he wasn't exactly sentient

The people from Connie's village weren't too sentient either, same with Ymir before she ate Marcel.

Eren at Trost was just dumb, but Connie's village and Ymir were genuinely mindless. Rod Reiss himself said that by taking the syringe Historia would become a mindless titan for a little while, but she'd be fine after eating Eren. Titan serum turns you into a mindless titan, and you need to devour (specifically, consume the spinal fluid of) a titan shifter to become a shifter yourself. This is what has been true of the examples explicitly depicted so far (Ymir, RBA, Eren, the Reiss family succession). Since the serum is itself titan spinal fluid, perhaps there's something more to it? Otherwise you'd be able to make more shifters out of one without needing to eat anyone. Of course, there's the possibility that Grisha wanted to die and/or had no other effective method at hand to pass on the Coordinate, or that the Reiss family didn't wish any of their members to possess titan powers but for the chosen successor (chained on a pedestal just screams of quasi-religious sacrificial rite), but it was the same situation for RBA as far as its implied as well.

Right, we might be missing something they haven't told us yet, but Rod should just be a big old dumb dumb if his transformation works like everyone else.

Eren is also some Pleb while Reiss has ~royal blood~ which confers some genetic gift which unlocks the full potential of the Master Serum. It's not unreasonable to assume Reiss would have more control than Eren would, but also, judging by his brother's reaction and his own reluctance to taking the Master Serum, it's pretty likely that Reiss isn't Reiss anymore.

I think the OVA Ilse's Notebook showed that you can break through your basic titanism if you have strong feelings about something. Briefly, that is. I'd even argue Ymir had ran from her city not as instinct but because she was filled with grief. It could be that Rod's drive is strong enough to stay focused on whatever his next task is. He probably has a backup plan.

Rod Reiss, episode 44: He could clearly have injected himself at any time, and devoured Eren without gambling on Historia.

That episode was great and I really want to know what’s so strong about the first King’s will that once they have it everyone immediately decides they can’t do a thing to change the world.

I wonder how possible it is that the first king's bloodline isn't itself immune to the mind control, and the first ling's will is a lingering mind control on anyone who inherits his memories, so that they can't break the spell he cast or something

Frieda manipulated young Historia's memories, so the Reiss family isn't immune. Other noble families are, though.

Holy moly that was a bananas episode. Scrape-faced Titan is one of the most hosed up things, and when his gutty-whats spilled over the wall I was full . This whole season is nutso, every episode feels like a series finale amount of info drops...

I'm actually upset with myself that I thought such a humongous titan would still have a face and chest after dragging its carcass through miles of dirt. Or maybe I'm not used to artists being that ballsy. This whole first king's will thing is a real head-scratcher. I hope Kenny is at least willing to share something with Levi about the whole thing. It'd be a shame if he's still loyal to the family after what Rod did.

I think Rod Reiss just didn't know that much about Titans or Titans injections. He hosed up by picking the wrong vial, he surely chose one that said 'the strongest, biggest titan evar!!' and well, in the end it was one so big it didn't get to see Eren chained.

The scene where they slice apart the mid-air chunks was really cool, but the way they were just vaguely hovering in the air above everything made it feel like PS1 Spiderman, where the webs just go into the air.

a computing pun posted:Really? I've been looking for a cheap way to get rid of my trumpface... Well that took years of dedication of making GBS threads on John Cena, but go into the WWE thread and repeatedly insult a wrestler and someone will bite! I just rewatched the Season 2 ED to see if what we know now answers some of the questions, and it does! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbfHY8mkhT8 You can see what I assume is a king making his weeping children eat Titan spinal fluid I assume, from the remains of the old king. The first image seems to be a girl offering either herself to the titan or offering the titan some kind of fluid, like when Eren ate the armor fluid. Also the number 45 flashes up, in the same font the episode numbers use. What does everyone think?

The breakdown, ignoring analysis of the one-frame cuts like the flowers and the can of herrings but using them as segment separators, goes something like: 1. We start with a woman making an offering (?) to a small demonic titan (?). 2. Then a female titan confronting/lording over humans bearing simple weapons. 3. A royal court (?) where everyone present cries/laments over skeletal remains on a slab, while 3 children (royal heirs?) quite explicitly devour the body. Several jars holding something red (flesh? blood?) surround the corpse. 4. Next we see various scenes of titans attacking humans: first of titans emerging from the sea and assaulting medieval fortifications, followed by several more of titans just devouring helpless civilians. Of note, in the background of some of these shots you can see titans that resemble the Colossal Titan (significantly larger and with small heads). Ending this segment is a scene of featureless marching titans, trampling over the earth, leaving only wasteland in their wake. 5. The next sequence is a long line of traveling people, similar to depictions in earlier seasons of how humans escaped the titans into the safety of the walls. 6. What follows is a blank landscape, over which naked people suddenly start fading into existence, rousing as if from slumber. 7. Then, the very final scene is a crowd kneeling in reverence to a tiered platform on which lie titans of various sizes, all of which are wearing capes/sashes and themselves kneeling in reverence to the lone standing female titan wearing a sash and a horn (the Founding Titan?). This titan has been crossed over. From what's been revealed, it's easy to connect 3 with the transferring of the Power of the Titans (specifically the royal family), while 5 is humanity traveling to the walls or where they would be built, and 6 a symbolic representation of the Founding Titan wiping their memories - leading to people coming to in a 'new world' with a clean slate.
