The Washington Post had a story about another great music venue falling victim, though perhaps not mortally, to gentrification the other day. The start of my adult life basically revolved around the Blackcat's scene in the late 90s and oughts. Hopefully the adjustments keep them going, but Dante's right on about the area changing into a bougie shithouse over the last 15 years. The author does note there's some irony there, though; the Blackcat was definitely a neighborhood invader in the 90s.

Paid $8 for rail drinks last night :signings:

I hope they use the rent they gouge downstairs tenants for to keep ticket and drink prices low, but that seems like a fantasy.

Yeah, I almost went to that show. I haven't been to the Black Cat in a couple years, most stuff I want to see isn't there usually.. this isn't surprising. That entire area it either takes 4-5 roommates or six figure salary to afford a sub par place these days.

She's playing a poor man's SXSW in Lincoln, NE later this week ... and going on at midnight Friday morning. Not sure I have the stamina anymore for that sort of thing.

If you like her and have the night free, go for it.

I'm a fairly big fan of Japanese Breakfast, and saw her recently. She puts on a pretty energetic and emotional show and thought it was pretty good, but if you're not a huge fan I'm not sure I'd recommend it. For me it was worth it just to see "Diving Woman" live, and was pleasantly surprised by a handful of other tracks which I thought were much better live than on the records.

Hey, there's a new Metric album out now!

...it's just alright. This one song stands head and shoulders above the rest IMO:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1ej6O9ZPEE

Not much else about it really jumped out at me.

Remember when Metric made entire albums full of songs that absolutely refused to leave your head? Or was that just my experience?

I've liked the stuff they've done over the past several years, but I feel like the last album of theirs that really grabbed me quite like that was Fantasies and that came out almost a decade ago. I swear to god, I would play Fantasies from start to finish in my car for YEARS after it came out. It never got old for me.

Also, I dug Synthetica, but was a little more lukewarm towards Pagans in Vegas.

They all used to be into cocaine pretty hard and ever since they quit it, their music has gone downhill. I'm not saying they should get back into drugs or anything but it's one of those weird correlations.

Fantasies was good as hell though. I remember thinking "the Dead Disco people made this?" and being pleasantly surprised.

Haven't heard the new album yet but that single (Dark Saturday?) was meh.

I enjoyed the half of the set I stuck around for (like I posted, it began at midnight, and I'm old).

Also saw Waxahatchee do a stripped-down set; Katie Crutchfield was joined by Kevin Morby out of nowhere for the last song, which begged the question "Why wasn't Kevin Morby on this festival's bill" but w/e.

The whole Broken Social Scene family tree were energetic late twenties/early thirties 15 years ago so it's not super surprising they stopped doing drugs, had families, and started making wistful dad-rock.

Speaking of Low, do y'all know about their (in)famous "Drone, not Drones" set? It happened at Rock the Garden in 2013. This is a little festival put on in Minneapolis by the Walker Art Center (modern art museum) and local hipster radio station The Current (also, it's funny people are talking about Metric since they also played it that year). Low came out and played a 27-minute version of "Do You Know How to Waltz?", and at the end Alan Sparhawk said "drone, not drones" and they left the stage. This was not announced. People whined on Twitter. Thinkpieces were penned. A guy I know was working the show as an audio tech and he said it was hilarious how mad people got.

As the article pointed out, it also doesn't help that there is more competition in the area now, such as Rock & Roll Hotel and Union Stage.

If you want to spend too much money on something you probably didn't think you needed:

https://www.withguitars.com/super-f...-vinyl-box-set/

quote:

Remastered BBC session recordings of the legendary Super Furry Animals, covering their emergence in 1996 to the period of major label excess of the early noughties, are being released by the band in remastered form across a deluxe vinyl box set. Courtesy of Strangetown Records and released on Fri 23 November 2018, Super Furry Animals at the BBC covers eight rare sessions recorded especially for BBC Radio One, including one unreleased song. A super limited edition vinyl set, the CD release and digital versions will also include three tracks from their heroic return to Cardiff in 1999 to play the cavernous Cardiff Indoor Arena.

Limited to just 400 vinyl box sets, brand new artwork developed from concept to stunning reality by long-term collaborator Mark James covers not only the external, printed box, but an individual sleeve for each of yeti in the band, with two, new illustrations by Pete Fowler also featured. The package comes with a foil-blocked 12” print and a separate insert of liner notes, featuring an essay by Uncut magazine journalist, Tom Pinnock, where the band and BBC studio engineer, Simon Askew, recall the day the Furries met Leo Sayer amongst other insights. The 37 tracks are pressed onto 180g vinyl following a thorough spring clean of the original recordings.

An additional, super limited edition vinyl box set of just 100 copies includes a specially-produced, fifth vinyl disc, which has pushed the boundaries of vinyl pressing to include the live tracks and an ‘additional cut’ of soon-to-be-sought-after ‘SFA DNA’. Details are soon to be announced alongside confirmed track listing, with collectors advised to link up with the band across social media and at Pledge Music for advance ordering details in the meantime https://www.pledgemusic.com/superfurryanimals

In an ongoing period of archival and re-evaluation, the Furries have worked side-by-side with the band’s curatorial collaborator, Kliph Scurlock and mastering maestro, Donal Whelan to restore recordings made for John Peel, Mark Radcliffe and Steve Lamacq and Jo Whiley’s Evening Session to pristine condition. In a collection beginning prior to the release of their debut album, Fuzzy Logic, the band’s adventures at the BBC open on April Fools’ Day 1996 with a visit to the, now demolished BBC Manchester studios for Radcliffe and Marc Riley’s Radio One ‘Graveyard Shift’, returning to London and the legendary Maida Vale studios just ten days later for their debut Evening Session recording. Their adventures continued to include three encounters with the late John Peel, including one session at his Peel Acres home in July 2001.
