The Washington Post had a story about another great music venue falling victim, though perhaps not mortally, to gentrification the other day. The start of my adult life basically revolved around the Blackcat's scene in the late 90s and oughts. Hopefully the adjustments keep them going, but Dante's right on about the area changing into a bougie shithouse over the last 15 years. The author does note there's some irony there, though; the Blackcat was definitely a neighborhood invader in the 90s.

Paid $8 for rail drinks last night  I hope they use the rent they gouge downstairs tenants for to keep ticket and drink prices low, but that seems like a fantasy. Rolling Blackouts C.F. slew, btw.

Yeah, I almost went to that show. I haven't been to the Black Cat in a couple years, most stuff I want to see isn't there usually.. this isn't surprising. That entire area it either takes 4-5 roommates or six figure salary to afford a sub par place these days.

Anyone have an "Is Japanese Breakfast good live?" opinion? She's playing a poor man's SXSW in Lincoln, NE later this week ... and going on at midnight Friday morning. Not sure I have the stamina anymore for that sort of thing.

I'm a fairly big fan of Japanese Breakfast, and saw her recently. She puts on a pretty energetic and emotional show and thought it was pretty good, but if you're not a huge fan I'm not sure I'd recommend it. For me it was worth it just to see "Diving Woman" live, and was pleasantly surprised by a handful of other tracks which I thought were much better live than on the records.

Modest Mouse just cancelled the first two stops on their tour last minute. Like they cancelled Mondays show an hour before it was supposed to start and the same thing happened yesterday. Wonder what the gently caress is going on with them and if the show in Brooklyn I’m supposed to go to next month will happen.

Hey, there's a new Metric album out now! ...it's just alright. Remember when Metric made entire albums full of songs that absolutely refused to leave your head? Or was that just my experience? I've liked the stuff they've done over the past several years, but I feel like the last album of theirs that really grabbed me quite like that was Fantasies and that came out almost a decade ago. I swear to god, I would play Fantasies from start to finish in my car for YEARS after it came out. It never got old for me.

The whole Broken Social Scene family tree were energetic late twenties/early thirties 15 years ago so it's not super surprising they stopped doing drugs, had families, and started making wistful dad-rock.

That may explain why I wasn't a big fan of the last 2 BSS albums either  Although that Do Make Say Think album from last year was loving great and they're part of that whole Broken Social Scene collective. Maybe post-rock is just immune from the trappings of dad-rock lmao

It happened at Rock the Garden in 2013. This is a little festival put on in Minneapolis by the Walker Art Center (modern art museum) and local hipster radio station The Current (also, it's funny people are talking about Metric since they also played it that year). Low came out and played a 27-minute version of "Do You Know How to Waltz?", and at the end Alan Sparhawk said "drone, not drones" and they left the stage. This was not announced. People whined on Twitter. Thinkpieces were penned.
