James Rolfe is so earnest. I will always regard him fondly because he is basically a 14-year-old broadcasting through a time hole from 1996.

the best avgn video is earthbound because he mostly doesn't do the toilet humor poo poo. i too have grown out of that, but otoh james also does other videos outside of that series where he talks a lot more matter-of-fact and those are pretty good.

compared to, say, every single one of his imitators, he's always been a lot less one dimensional, and hell he can be pretty fuckin funny describing terrible games when he isn't using toilet humor to do it.

I haven't watched that one, but if you want an AVGN episode that's (largely) free of toilet humor, the Pong Consoles is a good watch because it's just him covering the various home versions of consoles.

See, I still find lines like these funny, because of how ludicrous they get. There was one from some episode I was re-watching that just made me burst out laughing, but I can't remember what it was.

One that does stick out in my mind is when he's talking about the hypothetical Lester the Unlikely sequels. "There's a new one coming out on PS4, using the latest technology to make the disc out of orangutan feces...just turned out that was the only way, and really gives Blu-Ray a run for its money."

I was a huge NC fan as a kid, I gradually moved over to AVGN (and eventually mostly grew out of that too), but I only realized today that Doug's just been a bad AVGN imitator this whole time. I'm kind of embarrassed that it took this long for me to notice, even after getting personally disillusioned with Doug this year thanks to ChangeTheChannel.

Yeah, I still like watching avgn occasionally, the earthbound episode was actually kinda nice.

Watch this be comically ruined by Doug somehow getting into one. Maybe Brad will show up too as he seems desperate to keep him as his hanger on.

Personally, I've never really watched Steven Universe since even the people who like it make it sound really scattershot and boring, so this was genuinely interesting and fascinating to see just how much of a mess it really is. On like every single level possible, really.

I came to AVGN late so it never quite clicked for me, and I find Rolfe to be nothing more than surface level in his criticism, but he's also likeable and kind of endearing in his positivity a lot of the time.

I think actually having a life and not allowing his online persona to rule his life is probably the key to that.

Robobuddies at least makes some more robust arguments about things like flat framing and poor art rather than the tedious arguments from the other video which boil down to the show being horribly immoral for not patting the viewer on the head and telling them yes the brutal space fascists are indeed bad people we need to say this out loud directly no matter how obviously self evident this should be from just watching the drat thing.

On one hand, they touched on a lot of what made Korra a frustrating watch, but on the other, they go into it with a lot of baffling base assumptions, the greatest of which being that animation is for kids and anyone who tries to make adult animation is doing so because they're insecure.

Biggest problem with Korra is that they tried to do 13 episodes but didn't have the writing chops or weren't used to the format to adapt for it. There was a lot of filler in Last Airbender but they had a lot of character development in the non-filler episodes. Korra didn't quite work in the time they were given or chose to have. In the last season, Korra and Asami having a relationship was a cool addition but they have like two scenes together in the entire season and never really have a heart-to-heart except at the very end. It's why people felt like it was some sudden thing and why the creator's were tooting their own horn when they played it up.

The comics were pretty alright, though.

Just recently, I unsubscribed from Cinemassacre's channel because I really just want stuff from Rolfe and nothing from Mike matei or Ryan. It used to be a drop everything moment when a new vid came out but I still haven't watched Drake and probably won't anytime soon. Mike/Ryan just rub me the wrong way, and I guess I've just grown out of avgn's humor.

Someone mentioned it a few pages back, but I find it weird that I'm much more excited for a Stop Skeletons From Fighting vid these days. Never would have thought that a few years ago.

Seems like the writing team wanted to do a lot of things different without realizing that they'd be playing against their strengths as writers.

Other odd takes I remember from the Korra video:
-Netflix binging is bad and you should feel bad for doing it. I agree with Lily that there's a strong temptation to ignore episodic structure in the age of streaming, mostly to a show's detriment, but what business is it of theirs how I watch my television?
-Anarchism is stupid because it always leads to a power vacuum paving the way for totalitarianism. I don't know enough about politics to put my finger on why exactly this take is dumb, but I have a gut feeling that it is.

Oh, Oh I know what's wrong with the last part its political Anarchism is not what's depicted in the show so talking about it at all in regards to Korra is really, really dumb. More to the point that's kinda of nonsense, there have been multiple Totalitarian regimes in existence over the years and none of them came out of Anarchism. Nazi Germany, Fascist Japan and Italy all came out of fairly Democratic societies with functioning governments. The USSR was born out of an insurrection against what was basically a coalition dictatorship of parties and officers, so there's no evidence for that claim. If anything the history of Totalitarianism is a reason why Anarchism is a good idea, because all the examples involved the co-option of repressive institutions like the police and army and background nationalism and respect for authority to establish themselves.

And those don't really exist in Anarchist organised territories.
