It's got the best map design of anything in the genre i've played. There's a lot of actual freedom in where to go and when to go there as opposed to movement upgrades just acting as like the key you use to open the next given lock -- most zones have alternate methods of entry and it feels like at any point I have 3 or 4 areas and boss fights I can choose from. Also the way everything is connected makes sense architecturally from a lore standpoint and it's hard to explain why that's cool but when I find a train station it's just like "yeah of course there would be a train station connecting these two places" or like a passage between a mine or a refinery or whatever, it just always makes sense. All the connections feel very natural and even though areas are distinct it never feels like "here's your jungle zone, now you took an elevator and here's your lava zone" etc. It's not perfect but the map design specifically is best in class IMO

I love that it's about bugs but i'm unfortunately a Bug Guy irl and their twists on real world species are all super cool and surprisingly accurate in some weird ways

edit: it is very grey though and honestly just becomes more grey the further into the outskirts of the world that you get lol

i love it and have beaten it 100% 8 times across multiple systems lol. and they kept adding new stuff, the latest update being the biggest one where they added kirby-style boss rushes. it's a sick game

the art style especially in the first area can be offputting and starting new saves where you dont have the dash for 15min is a bit lame, those are my only complaints lol. but everything outside the first area looks great

I've already jump-started my October gaming with some classic Silent Hill for the Playstation. I also will try and fail, yet again, to play Silent Hill 2. It's a tradition at this point. I will probably never get to experience that game, I just can't handle it for longer that 15 minutes at a time, six months apart. The other October game I've got lined up is my first playthrough of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. I've also started work on my annual Halloween October Movie Marathon Madness list.

Speaking of silent hill I decided my first scary game was gonna be Silent Hill 4: The Room, and my component cables arrived yesterday. I only just started, I'll report back soon.

In Training

I really love the setting and structure of SH4 but judging from the first dreamzone, which is like 80% reused assets from the SH3 subway station filled with invincible ghosts that follow you around and just do damage by being in the same room as you, the game is gonna really piss me off I think. it pisses me off double already bc the idea is so cool but the actual execution is bunk. maybe it gets better, since they're not beholden to any logical town design or anything. They don't need another pier, amusement park and hospital. Dreams can be anything!

I think the ghosts are actually the most effective part of 4 because they're always a threat and they can appear anywhere at anytime, so it makes the whole game more tense because there are no safe areas. I still don't like Silent Hill 4 overall, but it's good at making the player feel like they're in constant danger.

I liked 2 a lot but I think 1 is still king. 2 is when I started to worry they were getting away from the horror for action though it still ruled hard. Just having a dude turn into a necro right in front of you in bright light was lame but otoh having to run around in a strait jacket was p tense. The return to the Ishimura is scay af

SH2 is so drat good. I played through it multiple times to see all the endings about a decade ago and it felt scarier the more times I played it.

It's true, but I like horror games with cadence. Like entering a room and not knowing if it's going to be safe or not. In the subway level I played I just had to run constantly and never look at anything for too long bc of the ghosts, which is a different kind of nerve wracking I suppose. At least they realized that combat in the previous games was lame and that everybody ran past everything anyway and made a mechanic out of it

1 is absolutely the king at being scary and atmospheric, and its story telling is much better than 2's.

but 2 is just crazy fun and to-the-point and has way more enemy variety

If you could take the atmosphere of 1 with the just better gameness of 2 then you have an all time great. Loved the spear gun from 2, more games hsould have spear guns. Also Isaac's suits in 2 were dope af

Despite not liking horror games I played through dead space and it was really good. I tried to coop 3 with a friend after getting it in a humble bundle and after about 15 minutes I had more than enough. It was so miserable and I don’t know how it got even mildly positive reviews.

Yeah the Newgrounds art put me off for a while then I fell in love with it in motion within about an hour of starting to play. It's such a confidently put together game, every aspect is so... holistic I guess id say

SH4 Update: I've been enjoying so far but, it definitely is a supremely halfassed game. There's no puzzles, all the combat is as easy as it ever was even though they went through the trouble of putting in a stamina bar and on-screen health indicators. The atmosphere is great even if the cutscenes are super corny. Returning to the room and being on edge about the subtle changes or potential hauntings is still cool. Having to replay every level halfway through the game with an escort when they were already kinda boring the first time is killing my buzz. I'll probably finish it bc it can't be that long but definitely a disappointment after how much I loved the first 2ish hours.
