Something Awful, so easy even a spaceman can do it!

Apparently being an indie wrestler and getting hurt makes it suck to not be able to work.

Christian Rose (Midwest talent) recently was feeling bad and his girlfriend took him too the hospital. They found blood clots in his lungs and have told him that he has to take daily medicine and cannot strenuously work out or wrestle for the next 6 months to a year until this is corrected.

He seemed upbeat for about a day but now, two weeks since the diagnosis, he started to complain about how time works because it is too slow.

Also, he found out that his insurance (provided by his day job for this specific reason) will not cover the medicine he needs to live longer.

I think if it was anywhere other than NYC, where the fans are going to be expected to rely heavily on public transit (including as part of the WWE travel package), it MIGHT be doable. The question is, basically, if ROH running Lakeland last year when everything else was an hour away in Orlando—and drawing their record crowd of 3,400—is remotely replicable by anyone else. I don't think it's worth testing, though.

The big problem right now is that a Spring Break-suitable venue is VERY hard to come by. They drew ~2,000 this year and should expect to do more for 2018.

* The only wrestling venue in NYC proper that could even barely match last year is the Hammerstein Ballroom, which is drastically overpriced, with rent in the $50,000 range or higher and a number of other contractual and union hurdles that make the cost even higher. Only Manhattan Center Studios would be allowed to shoot the show, there would be an origination fee, and only Manhattan Center staff would be allowed to sell merchandise.

* Elmcor Center is, while way too small for Spring Break, the biggest indie venue in NYC proper and also a terrible place to run. Hard to get to if you don't have a car and aren't by the 7 train, shenanigans with questions about the legal capacity and what they tell promoters it is, busted ventilation, leaks everywhere, the price hikes on water & food during #heatgate, no alcohol whatsoever (it's a community center/drug rehab, somehow), etc.

* The Rahway Rec Center in NJ lacks air conditioning—which shouldn't be a huge issue in April, knock on wood—but is otherwise a decent size gym...that would still be too small for Spring Break (you can maybe fit 1,500 people in with standing room). It's not super close to NYC, but it's only a few blocks from the commuter train station in Rahway, so there are far worse options for whoever runs there.

* Melrose Ballroom is a cool venue and I'm glad that it looks to be in regular rotation, but it's way too small for Spring Break. You can't put more than 700 people in there, which is about what Lost in NY did, but there are different ways to configure it. MLW was more crowded on the floor, but with much of the balcony closed off for production and less of the floor open because they moved the stage close to the ring to have an entrance ramp. (They probably drew in the 450 range.)

* None of the other wrestling-friendly club type spaces are big enough, either, which is why it wasn't exactly surprising that, even setting aside potential Axxess & NXT UK-related issues, PROGRESS won't be at La Boom. (They need a space that can hold at least 1,000 people.)

If GCW can't find their own venue for Spring Break, then I do wonder if they could make a deal for the same hotel ballroom that WrestleCon is using...

EDIT: I drafted most of this last night and forgot to post it until now. Well, Highspots is saying that not only is Rev Pro in the ballroom, but so is the Joey Ryan show.

actually i wonder how much the hulu theatre at madison square garden would cost; nxt ran a house show there a couple years ago and it seemed nice. if wwe wasn't on the outs with madison square garden, it would have been a perfect venue for progress, in fact. though i assume it's similar hell for broadcast or recording, even if it's not as bad as msg proper in that aspect

what was the capacity for terminal 5 like back when roh ran it? it's an absolutely awful venue ofc but i could see it, like, technically holding 1500+, even if half of them will be stuck in the back of the balconies literally unable to see down into the ring. i could see either JJSB3 or progress running it

I think asbury park would be a problem for spring break regardless. ROH did do a show an hour away but it also started earlier.

I mean spring break is a midnight 1 am show, so youd be looking at people driving back at 3 or 4 in the morning for an hour if it was in asbury park and their hotel was somewhere close to the meadowlands.

honestly, there's quite a few music venues in NYC I could imagine running wrestling at decent capacity, but the problem is usually sightlines and whether the venue wants to book wrestling.

I was curious, so I looked it up, and Playstation Theater could work - midtown location, must be relatively cheap and easy to book because, well, they book a lot of random poo poo there, from podcasts to corporate events to video game demos. However, I think the floor plan would gently caress it up: basically, there's some rows of rising seating in the back, but I don't think they all have a good sightline on a ring in the floor, especially if there was more seating (or even worse, standing GA) on the flat terrace level below. They also list a reserved seating capacity as 1,166, presumedly lower with a ring on the floor, so still not ideal

it sounds like america's nightmare medical system has a hand in that case.

i can imagine for 90% of wrestlers who get hurt it takes everything they care about out of their lives, i totally feel that as a performer myself. when i was younger the only times i went through serious depression were when i wasn't doing any sort of creative performance in my life, whether that was acting, playing music, whatever, so yeah i can relate to that. i hope janela has an easier time though, because he has a new chapter in his life opening up as a show promoter. in his short promotion career he's put on three acclaimed events, starting essentially from scratch, and building a ton of buzz around himself as not only joey janela, the bad boy, but also joey janela, the guy who put on spring break and lost in new york. I've found that as long as i do have some sort of creative endeavor i'm working on, that part of my brain is calmed down and i don't get depressed. my band broke up recently, but i've actually been doing fine because i've thrown myself into doing graphic design and posting it on twitter. just the fact that i'm doing something creative and getting out there for people to see is enough for me, and i hope it helps joey cope through such a long lay-off.

didnt realize the time had changed

was entirely serious about Westchester county center though, they're not adverse to wrestling, and have a train station a couple of blocks from the building

WWE used to shoot Raw there in the early 90s and they still have it on the house show loop

Plus it is a municipal building so it's probably going to be a ton cheaper

Everything I heard about the current Basketball City after that show was that it was a terrible venue and people were extra frustrated because they tried to make it seem like it was by South Street Seaport when it was actually by the sewage treatment plant. Depending on which train you take, it's 0.5 to 0.7 miles from the nearest subway stops, which is not ideal but not terrible either (former is similar to the distance from the PATH train to the GCW Jersey City venue). I've never been there, but the previous Basketball City, which ROH ran a few times, was a loving disaster of a venue. It was pretty much all flat seating, but the worst part was that getting in and out was a nightmare. The actual venue was a pressurized bubble on the third floor of whatever building, so fans could only get in/out through a revolving door on that level and there was just one narrow staircase.

Officially, the New York State Athletic Commission has an 11:00 p.m. curfew. There are obviously exceptions, especially for WWE, but nobody on the NY side of the Hudson River is going to be running a late night show other than maybe Kaiju, since they're good at avoiding being regulated as pro wrestling. At Lost In New York, I was seated right in front of the NYSAC inspector and this became an issue, but they were able to get enough time for PCO-Riddle to play out properly.

It's mostly the usual UK indie crew; that said they do have a couple imports to their name (Meiko Satomura is apparently their current champ, and Daisuke Sekimoto showed up a lot on the cards I looked at), so they might have a better chance at drawing a semi-decent crowd to Korakuen than you'd think at first.

Last month's show (8th Rule of Fight Club) had this card

Bruisermates (Millie McKenzie and Pete Dunne) and Trent Seven vs The Rascalz (Dezmond Xavier, Zachary Wentz and Trey Miguel)
Jordan Devlin vs Scotty Davis
Kyle Fletcher vs Omari
Mark Davis vs MK McKinnan
Chuck Mambo vs Charli Evans vs El Phantasmo vs Martina vs Drew Parker
Tyler Bate vs Daisuke Sekimoto

Daisuke's the only non-regular on that list as far as I'm aware, but it wasn't his first appearance there this year either, so I wouldn't consider it impossible to see him there if it's in the area and if he gets confirmed for it it's a must-watch, Daisuke rules
