Looking through your post history, I assume you're talking about the Crown Vic you said you bought. Since you never specified the year, mileage, or condition it's impossible to judge whether this is a reasonable offer or not.

It's Carmax so they're certainly lowballing you, but there's no way to know just how much without more details.

It was a lowball that was so low it was funny. I don’t expect to get much for it but I know if I went to craigslist instead I could at least get enough to cover the tires I’m gonna need for my new car. it’s an ‘09 with ~130k miles, body in not amazing shape, almost functional ac and an ever so slightly misfiring engine. I saw almost the exact same car on there for $1500 a month or two ago so I might ask for that and just try as hard as I can to keep it in four digits. That sounds high but in this climate a car that can just start in winter without problems will have a pool of interested buyers

My friend told me that the Fit is fun to drive in a manual transmission and depressing as all hell with a CVT so I'm going to test-drive a 2017 6-speed Fit EX tomorrow. Current price is $16500 but I'm hoping to get them to take it down to $15500.

It's been a few years, I hope I don't stall it in the parking lot!

You probably will stall trying to make an unprotected left turn and piss everyone behind you off.

That's what usually happens to me when I drive an unfamiliar stick.

The fit with a stick is a lot of fun though. Also, looking at your previous posts, my Mazda 3 is small, fairly fuel efficient, a hatchback, and a poo poo load of fun to drive. I actually look forward to my commute now. Might want to look into one of those.

IME it's when there's a slow leak and the a/c blows cold half of the time. Cold cold cold weak weak weak and so on for a week or two until getting a can of refrigerant.

I'm more worried about ever so slightly misfiring. If that means the exhaust barks every so often I had that happen with my Grand Marquis and shortly after I lost an ignition coil. That's a common problem with Panther platform cars.

Yeah one of the engine coils is kinda wonky. Two of them were totally shot cause coolant was leaking into them and hosed them up but I replaced those, so the car went from shaking hard when idling or accelerating to driving mostly fine but will get a little bit of engine shake if you are cruising or too slowly accelerating around 40mph. Other than that the engine runs well though, and it is actually a decently fun car to drive for being such a boat. There’s no carpet in it so you really get to hear that V8 moan

New 2017? Has it been sitting around? What's the price difference between that and a 2018/2019?

Personally would pass on it because of the remote start. Too many stories of people getting remote start installed and dealing with endless electrical gremlins as a result.

A new 2017 model? Is it a left over? This is confusing. If it isn't new, how much time or mileage is left on that warranty?

Remote starts on manuals are practically worthless as well, since you have to keep it in neutral for the remote start to work, which is problematic.

That’s good to know about the remote start. The remote start was an add-on, so I’ll ask them to take it off (it hasn’t been installed yet).

It is new (left over from 2017).

Price difference is $6k from a new mode because there are very few in stock. I actually can’t find the color I want anywhere.

Is that price from above the out the door price? I'm looking at honda's site and msrp for a 2019 Fit EX with 6-speed manual is $18,160 MSRP. Warranty is still 36,000 miles or 3 years so I'm guessing it still expires some time in 2020 opposed to 2021 for a new one.

It’s not. Is the MSRP on the EX really that low? Edit: I checked and you’re right, I was just surprised because that seemed low.

I also heard that there aren’t delivery dates on the 2019s yet due to the factory flood. Is this true?

Someone convince me not to buy a 2016 Passat 1.8t gas.

I found a certified used one at nearby dealer for 17k CAD with only 50k KM on it (about 13.5 grand USD and 30 thousand miles). All the features I want minus remote start. Does anyone know how much it costs to get one installed by the dealer?

I want to get rid of my current 2014 Impala V6 3.6 as even though its fun and full of features I've had a ton of problems with it and the seats are pretty uncomfortable.

I'd be saving atleast a grand a year on gas as well with the VW as I drive aprox 40,000 km a year.

I know I should buy a 2014 or so I4 camry or accord but they bore the hell out of me. Atleast with the VW I'll feel a bit more interesting.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Proposed Budget: 15-20k
New or Used: Used
Body Style: (e.g. 2 door? 4 door? Compact/Midsize/Fullsize Sedan? Truck? SUV?) 4 door car
How will you be using the car?: Commuter car. Has to fit two kid seats in the back. Big trunk is a bonus.
Do you prefer a luxury vehicle with all the gizmos? Needs backup camera, bluetooth, heated seats
What aspects are most important to you? I care most about reliability and MPG/maintenance.

My question now is whether an extended warranty is worth it. I’m going to do research into what it covers but it would be an additional 4 years / 62k miles for $1800.

Extended warranties are never worth it. You're paying in advance for repairs you'll probably never make. It's just profit for the dealership.

FWIW I had the extended warranty on my Subaru. I sold it around 45k miles and the only thing I used the warranty for was lug nuts. They had to replace them putting the wheels back on.

How much difference is the new one vs a used one? If the other posters haven't convinced you that a VW isn't a good idea, at least consider a new one. It's probably not much more and you'd get a warranty.

Not a Fit but my '13 CRV has had all of three non wear item failures in 130k miles. A piece of chrome broke off the grille, the HVAC fan got noisy, and the A/C expansion valve failed.

The last one is the only one that took any real work, but even paying for it at full retail rates would have been cheaper than the warranty.

I did it myself because I am apparently a masochist.

Prices for VWs especially Passats are a little screwy in the US v Canada because VW went through some bad times in the last bit and a lower trim 2016 Passat in the US probably cost less than $20k new.

I haven't been keeping up with car prices in Canada recently but if the Passat is not being sold at a 20% discount or more vs an Accord or Camry then there is no reason to consider it. If you want to be different consider the Legacy or Mazda6.

The absolute infuriating part about it is that there's no loving reason they couldn't have mounted it on the engine side of the firewall instead. There's tons of access from that side, it would take longer to evac/recharge than anything else. But nope it's behind the whole loving HVAC fan box on the inside.

Ate my 10mm deep well, too.

I don't think you have to, but if you get a firm price from a dealership you can spend the night emailing other dealerships with similar cars and try to negotiate the price from there. But if it's a hard to find car or the price is firm no one is going to budge very much.

Waiting is a tactic, not an end in itself. If it's the car you know you want at a price you're willing to pay, there's no benefit in waiting.

If you think you can get them to a lower price or find a more cooperative dealer, walk.

From what I've found online, there are three dealers with the same car I'm looking at, and the prices are all within ~$800 of each other. They all have the same add-ons but the priciest one also includes a trailer hitch, and the cheapest one has some really awful dealer reviews online.

I've been mulling this over for a couple of months and have my finances and everything sorted, so it's less a matter of being impulsive and more just getting myself to a dealer.

I would email the cheapest, ask for a total out the door quote, then email the other two dealers and see if they will beat it. But if that is what you want and the dealers are all close together you're probably only bargaining over a few hundred dollars.
