If you start losing steam then just read summaries of everything from book 7 until book 11, only exception you should probably read the last chapter of book 9. Never read book 10, it was basically Jordan tying up a lot of loose threads and nothing really happens. It starts narrowing back down and gets better in book 11.

I'm sort of wondering what should be cut. I like Aes Sedai politics quite a bit, but it probably doesn't come off best on TV. Rand managing stupid, shortsighted and/or evil nobles can likely also be cut. Since we have people here who haven't finished the series yet, I will write the rest in spoilers: Somebody suggested cutting the Seanchan, but they are very important to the overall structure of the story imho. They are such a good contrast in many ways to the mainland nations. Perrin's travels have a lot of fat to trim. You can establish Perrin as the badass Lord of the Two Rivers with the trolloc invasion there. Rescuing Morgase and earning fealty from Alliandre is superfluous, and the whole Shaido plot is unnecessary after at least Dumai's Wells, if not when Mat kills Couladin.

First 10 chapters of Path of Daggers are absolute garbage so far, other than the 5 minutes they spent on the Seanchan. They rule so much and I hope they're a big part of the story going forward. e: TV series of this would rule. As much as I love to rag on the books, I'm actually kind of excited for a TV series. I think it will be a lot more enjoyable. 5 chapters left of A Crown of Swords and I'm strongly considering TheBeardedCrazy's advice of "go read the wiki summary of books 8-10 and then start reading 11"

Some chapters are really worth reading. With the Choedan Kal for example is one of the most iconic scenes in the series, and is a fitting finale to Winter's Heart. There are others that we could recommend to you if you are interested. Edit: I think Winter's Heart in general gets a bad rap, being sandwiched between TPoD and CoT. It's worth reading, you can skip the first six chapters if you don't care for those particular characters. Just a reminder of the RJ approved accents circa 2000: Two Rivers - Irish/English Illianers - Dutch Aiel - somewhat Slavic Tairen - Spanish Domani - Indian Saldaean - Egyptian/North African Seanchan - Texas A bunch of people of varying ethnicities rocking Texas accents and medieval Japanese style armor would rule so hard on TV.

I appreciate the outpouring of enthusiasm and kind words in this thread, but let's rephrase this title a little. Saying that I'm considering giving them the rights for free implies that I have the option. I haven't talked to CDPR (though I've considered several times sending them an email and seeing if they'd be willing to meet next time I'm in the area.) I'm not in a position to offer them anything. Part of the reason I didn't post in that other thread until I was summoned was because I didn't want to come off as presumptuous. But...I did read the original article and think, "Man, is Sapkowski crazy? I'd practically kill to have such a high quality adaptation of my work." If you magically gave me the chance to have an adaptation on the level of the Witcher--but with no payment given to me--I'd take that in a heartbeat. I'd much rather know it will be good (or at least be in the hands of someone skillful and passionate) than gamble on big money up front with a risk of bad quality. Please, though, don't put CDPR on the spot or bother them too much about this. I've had some discussions with those who run video game companies, and I know a little of the stresses put upon them. If something goes wrong with a book I write, and it flops, then I'm the only one who suffers. But video game companies work on tight margins for years, employing the passion and enthusiasm of hundreds, to create a game. They need to pick their projects VERY carefully, because a flop has huge ramifications for all of their employees. I'll continue to explore getting a good video game adaptation of Mistborn and/or Stormlight--in part because I want to play them myself. But the proper way for me to do this is keep meeting with companies, talking to them, and learning more about their business. I didn't want to hijack a thread about another author to do this, and I feel a little bad that this exploded like it did. (That said, you guys are awesome.) --Brandon

I enjoy me some video games, but I haven't gotten hyped about a video game since Diablo 3, which was a crushing disappointment. If we got a game like The Witcher 3 but in Roshar I'd pre-order that poo poo and go to the midnight release so hard. It would need to be based on original characters rather than Kaladin or anyone we know, but drat it would be so cool. And living with the knowledge/presumption it'll never happen, or it will probably be some budget studio to make a Cosmere game, is bumming me out. Ugh, in today's time (#MeToo), I don't know how you can do the Rand/Elayne/Aviendha/Min love square without it coming off as pretty sexist. At least if you go with the original version, you can always defend yourself with just being faithful to the work of Robert Jordan. And I'm not looking forward to the Seanchan treatment of damane, and the reaction to that. One thing I agree with is that Tam and Rand in the Westwood was one of the best scenes in book 1. The terror Rand feels the whole time really sets the tone. And of course, Tam in his fever both foreshadowing/world building ("They came over the Dragonwall like a flood" - introducing the Aiel so early) and revealing that Rand is not his son, with all that implied for both of them.

That the situation exists is due to the author's original work; attempting to redress it and make it less exploity may fail but you can't fault them for seeing the issue and making an effort. It's unfortunately a core part of the work, too--can't exactly just ignore it. Going poly with it is risky but has the best chance of coming off with "this is totally not a harem, really" that anything else would have, guaranteed. The damane I think you can play straight. It's horrific but outside of Seanchan POV that aspect is never downplayed and is a major driver of tensions. They probably won't go all torture-porn with it, but expect Egwene's tribulations to play out in full.

I was wondering what people find so bad about that Rand love square, so I decided to google it. Apparently that was a bad idea, some people have some really over the top takes on that poo poo. Maybe I am blind but I never really saw Rand's three girlfriends as a problem, since they all know what they're in for. It even goes as far as them making plans for him? Especially for a book that's full of rape/abuse scenes and other power plays (from both genders).

I mean, on the surface, that the savior of the world not only gets to have a harem but is prophesied to have one is pretty off-putting in terms of the misogynistic messaging. In the context of the world where the Aiel treat bigamy as normal and it seems to be a fairly emotionally healthy practice in their society, it is amusing that Jordan makes their reactions to Rand's trigamy basically the same as the wetlander's reactions to the Aiel's own practices. But that's only if you've read a couple thousand pages and manage to ignore a lot of the other pretty bad gender imbalances that he wrote into the fabric of Randland. Things like the older Aes Sedai treating their young bonded Ashaman like boy toys are definitely the outlier in terms of overtly written female-over-male power relations, especially since even when he puts women in charge he typically writes them as shrill, catty, and petty AF. You can basically feel the negative feminine stereotypes rolling off the page even when he's trying to make his female characters seen strong. Don't get me wrong, I love the books for what they are (and Jordan did better at all this than most of his peers), but they are definitely a product of an old guy writing them at the end of the 20th century.

There's a lot of details left out there but I'm pretty sure that's what's meant here. I can understand the change: polygamy is easily viewed as purely sexist (as the women are defined entirely in terms of how they relate to a man) while polyamory is more progressive and nontraditional (as everyone is defined in terms of their relationship to all of the others).

It's usually a one-man-to-many-women scenario where the women are all married to the man. The social, religious, and legal strictures often give great power to the man and little to the women. There are a lot of examples of exploitative, abusive, and restrictive situations involving arranged marriages, child marriages, and so on that tie in with polygamy. Polygamy is often found in cults, for example. Polyamory is far less defined, and typically has a greatly reduced centralized power dynamic. You have some number of people who (romantic/sexual) love some number of other people. There doesn't have to be overlap between all members. If there are five people in a polyamorous group, doesn't mean that every one of them has sex with all four of the others. Many people don't understand polyamory or agree with this kind of relationship jumble, but it's rarely exploitative or restrictive the way polygamy is. Although it's kind of rare to find a three-to-one polyamorous group where all of the three are all willing to share one person like Rand with Elayne/Min/Aviendha. Usually the other three would be into each other to some degree, too. The Rand love square is set up like a polygamous marriage but treated like a polyamorous jumble. It's trying to straddle the line between both.

In WoT, women have almost all of the power, and there are multiple instances where the women in power are the perpetrators of sexual abuse. Matt, for example, is held captive and raped by a powerful noble. It's played kind of for laughs--mostly because we see it through Matt's eyes, and he laughs at everything--but he's kept for this noble's sexual amusement for a long time. He even develops a bit of Stockholm Syndrome about it.
