I was looking quickly through the list of stuff I have in gpedit and thought those were it (I still have those set from back when they worked on Pro) the thing that turns off crap on the settings sidebar is "Allow Online Tips" which is in Admin Templates -> Control Panel also there's a registry hack that works on Home

The hard drive in my wife's desktop is about to crap out, but the rest of her desktop still works fine so I'm thinking of just buying her an SSD and doing a fresh install of Windows. Only problem is that I've never done a fresh install of Windows onto anything before. Two questions to start off: 1. The Windows webstore has options to either download a product code or buy a USB to install Windows from. If I download a product code, how am I going to get it onto the new hard drive to download Windows without the drive/computer being connected to the internet? 2. Which version(s) of Windows come with Office pre-installed?

Mostly all versions of Windows has Office on the start menu that you click on it and it takes you to a purchase page for Office, or it's pre-installed with a 30 day trial license. Typically you get the latter from brand name computers.

You can re-use the key for Windows 7 or 8 that came with the computer, and thus don't have to buy anything. 1. get a 8gb or larger USB flash drive (which has nothing you care about on in, because this process will wipe it) 2. download this program from microsoft 3. the program will download windows 10 and make the usb stick into an installer 4. install windows 10 onto the new SSD that you put in. it helps to unplug the other drives during this process, otherwise the installer may be difficult due to another drive being the designated boot drive. MS has often claimed that they're done with free updates, but they haven't turned it off. You get a 100% real license and activation. Unless the PC is ancient it's almost certainly 64bit. The last desktop intel processors without 64bit support were more than a decade ago. If you have a model we could confirm it for you, but if this is an actual desktop and not something like an all-in-one or microbox it will be 64bit. Theyll probably push the update back out in a couple weeks, but if you already got hit by the bug you're definitely SOL; another lesson in backing your poo poo up I guess, as much as it sucks (try using recovery software) The worst thing is, they had people 3 months ago reporting that 1809 would delete your user profile docs in this scenario (seems to be accidentally triggering one of those 'delete user profile in X days'). They either completely ignored them despite knowing it was a thing, or never read them in the first place. Feedback Hub and Insider Preview testing are officially useless, not that many people thought otherwise. Thanks for the regedit info; MS is the worst

If you are synchronizing your settings across multiple machines via your MS account (like one would expect everybody at Microsoft would be doing), then when you install/upgrade to 1809, your Theme is set to 'Synchronized theme' or whatever. If you switch from the synchronized theme to the default Windows one, then Explorer and the right-click menus seem to work correctly. So switch your theme to the default one, and then re-customize it. Once you customize it, it should automatically synchronize across. Bingo! That did the trick. I suppose it serves me right for being one of the two people in the world to have a Windows phone.

I have this unusual problem with Windows 10 where I right-click on the desktop, the menu pops up, I choose to customise my screen (where I can change colours, view fonts, choose designs, etc.) and open that menu. But at that point CPU usage of one to three cores goes up to 100 or close and it will take a minute or two to take me there. Any changes (like going from "start" to "fonts") I make here take a lot of time and it feels sluggish. All other windows menus / places seem fine though. Couldn't find anything on google regarding this. Any idea? Thank you. (AMD 2700 / 16GB / Windows is on a 256 GB Samsung SSD / Asus Prime X470 Mainboard / slighty underclocked but stable)

I use crashplan (still) for cloud and acronis for offline backups. Just wondering.. The old rule was not to upgrade Windows before SP1 was released. Any variant of that which would apply these days? Stay 1-2 feature upgrades behind the latest one?

You're probably smart to hold off on Win10 build updates for a while since QA is terrible these days, but the nice thing is that the issues seem to get patched out much faster than waiting for a full SP in the old days.

I did an install one time where I went to some business that a lady ran. I installed the software, shower here what to click on to connect etc. Later that day we got a support call asking where her files for he business were. You see, she stored all her "completed business files" for the last two years in the recycle bin. That way she could reuse them if she needed (because recycling was good). Of course she blamed us and configuring of the dial up network. She was very mad. Point being yeah downloads isn't the place to store things you want to keep. Move them to a new folder and if you want assign it as a library location for videos.

I would just configure the Windows Update group policy for "Select when Preview Builds and Feature Updates are received". Adjust this to "Semi-Annual Channel". * Semi-Annual Channel: Feature updates will arrive when they are declared Semi-Annual Channel. This usually occurs about 4 months after Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted), indicating that Microsoft, Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), partners and customer believe that the release is ready for broad deployment. That should work.

Dunno about you, but my downloads folder is full of garbage, until I clear it out and decide what I actually want to keep. It's not the worst idea to organise your stuff and treat it as a temporary landing pad It's still optional though right? I know a lot of people treat it as "my stuff" because they don't janitor their files

I double-checked and, yep, there's a My Documents sitting there in my user folder with a single item created in 2016 inside it from a game I played for like ten minutes.  I like how the code they introduced to remove the empty extra folders didn't do anything as simple as check that they were empty.
