and yall are still wrong about asylum. it has too many things happening, it is by far the highest level of gore porn this show ever did (which i'm never a fan of), and it never really ties back together around a central theme the way the best seasons all do. by the end of asylum we've had potential aliens involved, satan possessing a nurse, a serial killer whos the rapeson of another serial killer, a nazi mad scientist fleshcrafter, and a hell of a lot of people being tormented to no end. there never really seems to be a point any of this is getting at whereas:

cult was similarly weak like asylum in my opinion because it again didn't have a strong theme holding it together. it was mostly just a lot of superficial "politics sure has gone crazy" with a bunch of surprise betrayals thrown in. this season could still redeem itself but this episode was real weak. a couple decent scenes though.

Asylum is about trauma. Specifically the trauma of institutionalization and medicalization (which is the throughline between the asylum, aliens, and Nazi doctors), but in general the experience of lasting trauma and the abject failure of institutions that say they can and will fix you and make it okay - like the church - but can't. Partly because some things you can't fix, and partly because when you can - in the show's estimation - it has to come from within, not without. The ending is the protagonist finally beating her trauma by asserting control over it.

Cult is indeed about the insanity of politics, but to see what it is you have to pay attention to what's missing. The prevailing theme is that politics are about feelings, not logic, especially (as Kai seizes on) fear. Obviously the conservative characters are vulnerable to it, because that's the mode of their entire politics - xenophobia, homophobia, and at the root of it all the fear of change and loss of their identity and livelihood - but the season illustrates by the midpoint that the liberal characters are equally vulnerable. What's missing is someone who can win an argument with Kai, who he's wrong about, someone motivated by something bigger than fear. And really, there are only two answers: a real leftist/progressive (a political stance you'll notice is suspiciously absent from the season with one partial exception) and nobody. Rendering the season either a leftist critique of American politics, or a nihilist statement about our fate.

They're the two best seasons of AHS!!!! Bitch!!!

Asylum def had a bunch of stuff thrown at the wall, but tbh I think how crazy the season felt really suited it, considering the setting and overall conflict of proving you're not insane.

It was a very rare case of Murphy going too batshit but it somehow feeling right. The only plot that really felt superfluous to me was the alien stuff. And mostly because the alien stuff led to a weirdly boring finale.

Needed some demon nun vs alien tbh

e: also it was the first season to have paulson at the forefront instead of her bit part in Murder House and led to a time honoured tradition of Paulson vs Lange, which is cool and good

Yeah, they'll likely air AS4 first. Which I'm glad for tbh. Would feel weird to have 11 so soon after 10. I feel like the winners should get a clear year of reigning.

AS2 happened just a couple months after S8, and AS3 was just a couple months after S9. There hasn't been any room to breathe, and it's definitely taken away from Bob and Sasha's reigns in my opinion. There's no reason to have AS4 so soon; kinda feels like the pool is getting a bit shallow for All Stars :smith:

This is exactly how AS3 was filmed and aired.
Season 10 was filmed before it but aired after it.
I think jit bull is right in saying All Stars is a lighter build up for the main attraction of a new season.

Especially if they finally bring back some AS1 girls. They deserve it after that disaster of a season lmbo. I could see them bringing on past winners again, too, maybe. There's a few who would be interested but idk how well it would go over after a good chunk of people were salted about Bebe getting another chance.

I don't necessarily mind them doing AS every year, I just hope they pace them out better this year. Rumour has it it's going to air in loving December or January which ... I'm not too upset about, as long as it means there will be a few months between AS4 and S11. Going straight from AS3 to S10 was exhausting, esp if you're like me and was salted at the jury tomfoolery and lack of a reunion episode lmao

Bringing back anyone from AS1 is totally fine by me since they were so, so mistreated by the trash fire that was the team-up deal.

bringing back regular season winners though, I dunno. Bebe wasn't all that great, Raja doesn't seem the type to be into it, seasons 4 and on are well-known enough that it would be weird, and Tyra turned out to be a pretty miserable bastard all around. Didn't they threaten to bomb Dragcon or something? yeesh.

Jinkx has said recently she would do it if asked. She's one winner I'd like to see tbh, if only because she's grown and learned so much since then. And she never got to show off her singing, other than the Can I Get an Amen? challenge.

Otherwise yeah most winners prob wouldn't want to, or haven't changed enough to really warrant it imo.

I'm not as worried that the casts may become All-Stars or Eh-Stars instead of ALL-STARS since it's basically Survivor: Drag Race at this point.

There are more than enough queens that I'll be happy to see again that they could probably go to at least AS6 without running dry.

It’s a mixture of this and drag race burnout tha5 has me worried about All Stars 4 coming so quickly. All Starts used to be a huge thing, especially AS1 and 2. If you do it every year, it not only stops being special, but the pool of queens becomes much more shallow and you get more WTF contestants that are probably there more to pad numbers than actually be all stars. Also there’s the problem of queens potentially angling for All Stars just in case they don’t win main season and try to play towards the fans in a disingenuous way. Then again, this is reality TV so everything is pretty disingenuous. Maybe I just don’t want it being more obvious.

Yeah I think they should do AS maybe every other year, it's just kinda too much. They also need to settle on a no-bullshit format because each season of All Stars has had some new elimination/coronation gimmick and it's never really clicked. AS just seems like "gently caress it, why not, let's do it and throw some zany twist in for kicks" while regular seasons are pretty settled in their format and always a good way to gain exposure for queens.
