I can see the appeal for Freddy’s Dead, but it’s just too lame imo. Too much nonsense.

Honestly Talalay did a better job channeling this stuff into Tank Girl. It just feels too far for Freddy.

Also his death is lame as hell.

The weird thing about Child's Play 3 is that it's a pretty bland and boring movie but the British tabloids tried to blame it for a murder and get it banned. It was a weird aftershock of the Video Nasty scare.

Whoa now, ANOES 4-6 are solid (if dumb) horror sequels. I’d even say they’re more entertaining than the consistently-praised but secretly boring New Nightmare.

Yeah, I re-watched New Nightmare a while ago and loving hell, what a slog to get through. It definitely gets praised for what it’s trying to achieve, rather than how successful it is in doing so.

Also, was 4 the one with the guy screeching and flailing about while fighting an “invisible” Freddy? Good lord, that poo poo was stupid.

You have to give Craven credit for trying to redefine what the Nightmare series was at a time when horror - especially with slashers - was running on fumes. Unfortunately, rather than streamline it back down to the core concept and jettison the ridiculous mythology, he decided Freddy just needed a NEW ridiculous mythology.

Craven was a creative talent, obviously, but then he also had a tendency to go for the same tricks multiple times and for me that gets tiresome when I watch his films. Probably the worst example that I noticed recently was Cursed, which he made about 10 years after Scream but he had to do that thing again where he puts a known actress on the poster and then kills her off in the first scene. But it's just so painfully obvious that's what he's doing, and sorry but Shannon Elizabeth isn't exactly a timeless name compared to Drew Barrymore. So the movie is already dated as gently caress because you watch it and you're like "oh yea haha I guess I was supposed to be surprised that they'd kill of major Hollywood star Shannon Elizabeth so soon".

I hadn't even heard of that film, and looking at the cast, it's funny how a whole bunch of the other cast members are now much bigger deals than Shannon Elizabeth (what is she even doing these days?), like Jesse Eisenberg.

Reading up on the production issues, it's really unfortunate that the Weinsteins were involved, because a fair chunk of those problems can be pinned directly on those two loving pieces of poo poo.

The same thing easily could've happened with Scream, it's actually easy to forget that Drew Barrymore was in a weird kinda limbo in her career when she did Scream, she hadn't quite transitioned into adult roles successfully yet. So if not for stuff that came after Scream like The Wedding Singer, Charlies Angels, Ever After, Never Been Kissed etc., she might be just as forgotten. Especially compared to people like Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Jamie Kennedy, and Neve Campbell who all went on to have pretty big careers in the 2000s.

The movie theater/dream loop/roach motel block is maybe the best part of the series.

It's definitely Renny Harlin's best movie behind Long Kiss Goodnight.

I looked up Harlin’s filmography earlier because I also wondered if that was the case but I haven’t seen enough of them recently to make that claim. Looking at his work though, woof... He occasionally rises to the level “eh, pretty good I guess” in between a bunch of dreck. I remember that he came off as super, super smug in the Alien 3 special features, acting like he was far above the chaos going on while he was attached to that film...

He's a strange case, because he never had like a fantastic run of films where you can look at those years and say "yea, I get why people thought he was a big deal". Right from the beginning he couldn't seem to go more than one or two movies without a spectacular failure. Between 1988 and 1995 he made Nightmare on Elm Street 4, Die Hard 2, and Cliffhanger(all successful).....but also in that same stretch he did The Adventures of Ford Fairlain and Cutthroat Island, two notorious flops. Then the same thing happened when he kinda came back a bit with The Long Kiss Goodnight and Deep Blue Sea, he then followed that up with two absolute turds in Mindhunters and Exorcist: The Beginning. He's gotta be one of the most inconsistent big-time directors ever.

Runway Train is an amazing film.

It starts off as the stupidest and dumbest eighties action film you can imagine. You have all these cliches, and then...

It becomes gripping. You care about the characters. The one convict gets this amazing speech where he asks the other prison escapee what he's going to do, and the guy is like "I'm going to live on an island and be rich" and the convict is like "no, you might have a shot if you can take poo poo from a guy and not bash his head in."

I love it.

Also, Olive’s upcoming Frank Capra WWII set will include Prelude to War and The Battle of Russia from the Why We Fight series plus The Negro Soldier, Tunisian Victory, and Your Job in Germany.
