The Geek Social Fallacies is 15 years old. As much of a tabletop nerd as I am it's pretty incorrect to say that tabletop gaming doesn't have a shithead problem because of the face-to-face aspect, though I will venture that it's probably gotten better nowadays in a general sense even if there are still lovely people involved at various levels (from players to creators). More games these days include sections on things like handling potentially problematic content at the table and giving groups clear guidelines on how to say "yeah actually I'm not really comfortable with this" and while some people have criticized the recent trend of popular podcast/recorded RPG sessions for one reason or another, at the very least they've done a lot to push an impression of what a cool gaming session looks like that doesn't involve Bob the GM having Janet's sorceress get gangraped by orcs.

In retrospect my games actually helped some awkward nerds make friends and I think even a couple formed out of it. But yeah, it was absolutely doing the work in our space to say “hey, bad behavior will NOT be tolerated” that kept it out. I'm going to be that guy and just point out that the TRPG industry is super lopsidded and has a TON of issues, like Zak S, and we actually have a thread, as many of you already know, to discuss its problems. It's just not as big as comics so "gate" movements can't gain momentum and less gets reported about it. Like, I'm not trying to be a downer or an rear end in a top hat or whatever, but it feels a bit like we are glossing over some of the really bad poo poo that happens in that industry too. I used to be super into TRPG stuff (though I chilled on that) so I remember following the BS alot so it just seems weird to not recognize it to me. Like, when a harassment campaign was run against Funhaver studios, that posted here, where they outed the creator as a trans woman and harassed her into shutting down her business. And then the guy who organized it got a special thanks in D&D 5e (It's worth noting Mearls, the head of 5e, refuses to believe it happened, officially, and not that he knows and is okay with that, according to what he says). It's also that a lot of the bad things in the TG industry are super isolated. Almost all businesses are sole proprietorship with no employees. Hell, I run one. So, there is less grounds for big, bad poo poo to happen. Though, it still does like with White Wolf and the sexual harassment guy (or was that Paizo?). Most of the b.s. happens in lovely game shops or lovely game tables or lovely game companies that think "rape is a joke" or the near constant "pay in exposure/paycheck got lost in the mail for reals" bullshit or from just the gross under-representation of non-white cis het people (like when that gay guy got harassed at the MtG tournament for having some gay fan art when lesbian fan art from het male players was considered fine). Like, I just felt the need to say all that. Edit: I think I may be mistaken about the vibe and spoke without thinking and now have made an rear end out of myself.
