Gauge's felony is the dumbest of all time for multiple reasons, but it's still funny that people think he's some kind of murderous thug when all he did was politely ask for money in a bank.
And, as I learned from the prosecutor for the article I'm working on, he also told the teller that was enough when she got past $3,000.

He was an a desperate opiate addict. That type of robbery is generally perpetrated by addicts who get desperate. Being that Nick Gage is: 1. Trying to commit himself to extended sobriety and 2. Universally considered a good dude, just one with problems he's working hard to overcome, it's clear that those who are super negative about him are either concern trolling or have antiquated views about addiction.

I've never directly interacted with Nick but I know a lot of people who worked directly with him who never said a bad thing about him, and talk about how easy it is to work with him both before and after his incident. The guy is living up his gimmick and has a reputation for being a death match guy, but I've heard so much worse about guys you'd never expect but absolutely nothing negative about Nick. He should be remembered for throwing the bird while literally dying being choppered out of Tournament of Death and not for his lapse in judgement and desperation, Wish the best for him mdk

What's the actual bank robbery story? All I know is that he robbed a bank, but was it some robbed-at-gunpoint thing with hostages and poo poo or did it not get that crazy?

He handed a bank teller a robbery note saying he had a gun and "Would loving shoot her if he didn't get the money" and walked out, that's all there was to it besides walking in without anything covering his face. I believe it was Chuck Taylor laughing at him for wearing more to cover himself to the ring than he did to rob a bank, but there was no weapons or hostages or anything going on but the teller he went to was traumatized and quit her job.

He's not a bad person as far as I know, he just had a bad opioid addiction and the robbery was more of an attempt to cry for help than anything malicious.

Basically this. I've had nothing but positive interactions with him and have heard of zero negative ones outside of poo poo you'd expect from when he was using. I'd be way more surprised if he turned out to be a creep than probably the vast majority of people in indie wrestling.

I don't have strong opinions about Nick Gage personally at all but this does seem like its kind of glossed over. Like, whether he had a gun or not or meant it or not, threatening the life of someone is still a pretty hosed up thing that can (and apparently did) do real damage to an innocent person.

Now, I'm all for forgiveness and reform and if Gage is making a sincere effort to fix his life and make amends then I hope for the best for him. But like... he still did something really lovely and wrong. Its ok to acknowledge that AND forgive.

Mostly I just don't like Deathmatch stuff and the only time I really enjoyed watching Gage was when he was teaming with his brother. But I haven't seen him since he got out of jail.

I don't feel like it really gets glossed over? He halfway melded it into his gimmick and everyone acknowledges that he robbed a bank.

As for his work, he's usually not a death match guy anymore. Mainly a brawler. I saw him have two really solid matches live at the SCI in August with no juice, few gimmicks, and no swearing. His match with Timothy Thatcher at Bloodsport, which I also saw live, was a delightful clash of styles, as well, for example.

Bix, I'm going to disagree with you. Framing something as "politely asking" for money in a bank robbery while neglecting to mention the fact that the polite request was really a threat of lethal violence is pretty much textbook glossing over.

I don't think it was being glossed over but was being presented as a counter to the earlier claims from that venue of him being a violent felon. He hosed up, did something real lovely, and did something awful to that bank teller. He also did his time, paid her reparations, is bettering his life, and never actually inflicted actual violence in his crime. Its the ridiculousness of treating a guy who hosed up and appears to have made improvements in his life as a career criminal just because he will always have that felon label on him.

I'm not defending the arena decision against him. I was just really reacting to the "all he did was politely ask for some money" stuff. He threatened her life. He didn't have a gun but she didn't know that and she had every valid reason to fear he was being honest and her life was in danger. That's hosed up.

But as I said, I believe in reform and forgiveness. I think ex-felons deserve a right to re-assimilate and get their lives back on track. Hell, I think felons should be able to vote while in prison. So he served his time, is keeping his life on track, trying to do better and maybe even give back for what he did? Then I am happy to move on even if I personally don't want to watch him smash someone with a lighttube or something. He should be free to do so for someone else's entertainment if he so chooses (and... you know... the other guy).

Bix one of my best friends went to prison for 4 years because he attempted to rob a convenience store because of an opiod addiction that ended up causing him to lose his job. He's lucky he has a job now cause he found a guy who was forgiving and understanding but it's not really a good look to literally blend a felony into your gimmick if you're actually repentant. I get what you're saying, but he's also exaggerated the gimmick in a way (the MDK gang stuff and the like) that clearly separates Nick Gage from Nicholas Wilson even if Nick Gage is really just Nicholas Wilson turned up to 11.

He's never going to stop being a "felon" and it will follow him his entire life and get in the way of legit employment. Making felon his wrestling gimmick is smart business sense and a good way to handle the bullshit the justice system puts on people even if it looks bad. Like, its not a good look in polite society but there is a sense in him owning that label in a productive way.
