guess i should mention it even though it's weird discord drama but the server in question is titled somethign like FreeDCSS, and theyre like actively inviting random people they see in other roguelikes discords so probably don't click that unless you wanna see some Totally Epic Alt Right Bullshit about how it's actually pretty easy to build bombs you guys, and how cops wont gently caress around with Armed Killers. pretty cool time for my new to roguelikes friend to join a roguelikes discord and get a random-rear end invite to hellworld, btw!!

Gooncrawl update: spent most of the weekend playing crossworld Ocarina of Time randomizer with a friend, so didn't make much progress on permabuffs again (sorry!). Did more pull requests instead: -Merged Jester class (courtesy of Metoron!), which is an ex-worshipper of Xom who now follows Nemelex Xobeh and starts with multiple pies. Do not go down on the clown or the clown will go down on you. -I broke Harp of Healing by accidentally turning the Evocations scaling down to 0, so I fixed that to actually be 0.75 per Evo level. Whoops!

So I used to play this game a lot and I come back from time to time. I'm in the middle of a GnSk/Ash game and the sheer quantity of options is giving me some serious analysis paralysis, normally when I wanted to go for a spell like Haste or something I knew what I needed to invest to get it but when I can do literally anything I don't know what to do. Current dump Some random questions: There's a Trove that wants a +4 SDA, I assume I still have a reasonable chance of finding a Storm Dragon on V:$ and if not there, in Depths? Since I'm worshipping Ash, I can't exactly swap around gear to see how it affects my casting for free; should I try to go into some sort of ego plate/dragon armour? I only have 8 EA scrolls available atm and if 4 of them are earmarked for the trove, it seems not quite worth. Other than Blink and Silence, are there any spells I should be on the lookout for? I was pretty impressed by Confuse in one of my previous runs since I had way more Hexes than I'm used to for obvious reasons but this seems a little late to memorize it considering lategame MR. I have a Scarf of Resistance, is that better than generic +2 Cloak? Probably, right? I have access to a permanent bazaar, when should I go in? Which weapons should I hang on to? I'm thinking all my current ones except maybe my demon trident, since usually I don't bother to micromanage to that extent anymore? On a related note, are caster staves still good melee weapons? If they are a gnoll seems like a natural fit. Other options for amulet right now are the amulet of Peklyilo {rN+ Regen+ Str+2} and the amulet of Psychosis {Reflect Dex+6 SH+3} (670 gold), any thoughts? I want to keep it and a ring cursed for those sweet, sweet skill boosts. Also having trouble figuring out which ring I want to keep locked on. Which evokables are good? I've never really played around with them much.

So I chose Ash under the logic that you don't really hotswap armour anyway and while I haven't played her much, just having a slot or two open seems nice in general anyway to mess with your resistances/damage types. In addition, she raises all of my spellcasting/armour skills and I actually want all of them anyway. I've actually been pretty happy with her so far even without the cursed weapon, she lets me do things like cast Ring of Fire in chain mail without using wizardry or subjecting me to Chei. The best benefit of Ash IMO is innate clarity. I'd put up with a lot of poo poo to never have to deal with confusion again .

Made it to the Orc mines as a Gnoll, I mostly stabbed stuff with a poison dagger then cast blade hands or alternated between force lance and throwing poo poo. Had trouble building up good defenses and got greedy in a fight with an iron troll. It's an awesome idea for a roguelike character.

I really don't like Ash with Gnolls (not that I've ever ascended one!). To me, the appeal of the character is being able to swap to whatever cool poo poo just dropped on the floor, which is kind of hard to do when all your gear is cursed. Or you could not curse your weapon&shield, but then why are you playing Ash? Oka, despite being a huge bore, generally gives much better results. Even helps remove penalties for spellcasting! But then you're playing Oka. Lose/lose.

Yeah, the boost to spells as Ash was cool, but when I started finding new weapons and armor it was kind of a pain. You don't get enough remove curse scrolls to freely change equipment any more.

I'm pretty sure those fencing gloves give every weapon the ability to riposte like long blades. Is there an updated webtiles version of goon crawl? When I looked at CBRO it seemed to be an old version still.

Just started playing this again for the first time in a while. I've only ascended the easiest of easy characters (Minotaur Beserkers basically), but now I have a promising Gargoyle Earth Elementalist going (XL 24 - I have two runes and am clearing out the Depths after having done all but the last levels of Elf and Vaults too). But a question arises - did they like get rid of most or all of the RandArts? Because the only white weapons, armor, and jewelry I'm seeing all look like they're pre-designed, and not random. If so, why the gently caress did they do that? RandArts (and the possibility of finding something truly badass) were one of the best parts of the game. I don't want to find a bunch of stuff with mega-powers but also clearly calculated drawbacks (like this Majin-Bo I found this game). I want to the chance of finding something randomly awesome without a bunch of contrived balancing drawbacks, drat it. Or maybe I'm just imagining all of this, they're still in there, and I just haven't found any?

The biggest problem with Ash is the weak early game, but gnolls are brutally strong early, especially as hybrid backgrounds, so right around the time the gnoll advantage starts to run out, there's a good chance you've picked up the skill boost from Ash. I cursed pretty much everything and didn't regret it. I did make the super boring choice of going for a longbow as my cursed weapon, though. Longbows are still almost certainly the strongest weapon type in the game and gnolls of Ash are very well positioned to use them. Ammo is only limited early, but unlike other ranged characters, your melee is just as good as your ranged skill. By the time you have lots of arrows and a longbow, you have the skill boost from Ash and can curse your weapon. Longbows fall off late, but by then you have lots of spells and evocations to make up for it. It's not hard to find a longbow fairly early, and for a gnoll, it's almost always going to be the best possible target for enchant weapon scrolls when you find one. If you do find an amazing artifact, just burn a scroll and switch. On the negative side, what I just described is sort of optimal, boring play. If you don't want to go for a longbow every single time you find one, or if you can't find one early, you'll have a worse time. And by mid-late game a gnoll of Ash with a longbow doesn't play much differently from a high elf of Ash with a longbow except it has more HP and it gets good evocations in exchange for shittier spells.
