It's actually not hard to accumulate some UHD discs before you have the equipment to play them because of combo packs. There have been some combo steelbooks that I bought just because I'd rather have a steelbook but then when I bought a 4k t.v. I had a few UHDs already sitting around because of that.

I wasn't mentally prepared for how drastically different the color grading would be on the new lebowski transfer. Is this how it looked in theaters? I never got the chance to see a print of it.

They cancelled Filmstruck because they want to do a Warner Streaming service. Like they haven’t said that but that’s what’s happening.

Streaming will continue to be Balkanized because every distribution company in the world wants a slice of that pie, not just a bite.

No, they did announce it a week or two ago, it's where all the HBO stuff is going. They just haven't named it, yet.

Yup, it's shipping.

To go over the whole situation:

Nolan's release in theaters earlier this year was made from the original negative, which he referred to as an "unrestored" version – it was done entirely photochemically. Warm, yellow, and filmic, it looks quite a bit different from the chilly 2007 blu-ray, which makes sense considering how yellow Nolan's films like Interstellar appear.

The new 4K Blu-ray is supposed to be a separate beast; while overseen by Nolan, it is actually a digital remaster, with the color timing done by longtime Kubrick assistant Leon Vitali. But in the last couple of weeks nerds have started getting paranoid that Nolan may have "interfered" with the release.

To make matters more complicated, this new version includes both a 1080p release and a 4K HDR release. This video shows the differences. To my eyes, the 1080p Blu more closely resembles the 2007 release, whereas the 4K HDR strikes a balance between the Nolan film-boner unmastered edition and the chillier earlier release.

I think the bellyaching about Nolan and the 4K edition is misplaced. I'm away from my 4K HDR OLED for the next couple of months but just looking at it tonemapped on my MBP, it looks great. The 70mm in theaters was fun but I was hoping for a more clean digitally remastered release, so I'm excited to watch this.

If there is interest in a 2001 thread I can write an OP, this is my favorite movie

I've mentioned it a hundred times here and on other forums that the trailer WB put out does NOT use even a single frame of the 4K remaster, but rather the 2000s 2K with extra "modernized" color timing. That first comparison video that was linked makes it blindingly obvious because the framing is almost identical wheras the 4K would be inherently different because the old Blu-ray's 2K master was from a 35mm reduction internegative made from the 1999 65mm interpositive.

Also, the main gimmick of the new 70mm and IMAX prints was that they were from a new element. Kubrick had approved a new 65mm interpositive made from the 65mm camera negative - which included some replacement footage from over the years and dupes that were there from day one. Nolan opted to go for a totally photochemical workflow. That interpositive was used to make a new 65mm dupe negative from which the new 70mm and IMAX blowup prints were produced. Zero digital work.

What's lost in translation is that Nolan didn't command any revisionism - but rather received flack because not enough was done to the film. 1968 audiences wouldn't have seen the wildly variable grain levels, scratches, tears, and misaligned separations. The only way to get to 1968 quality would have been to output the restored 4K master back to 65mm and run from there. That's what Sony did when they made new 70mm prints for Lawrence of Arabia, effectively ending any use for the 65mm dupe negative created for its photochemical restoration.

It's worth noting that Christopher Nolan opted for the new 4K masters of his films to be scanned from interpositives instead of the camera negative so that all the color was built-in. One problem that can happen with scanning camera negatives is that 100% of the color timing has to be re-done from scratch.

As for HDR, I really doubt it actually looks blown out since demos I've seen in person look fine. It's impossible to show what HDR looks like without actually showing it on an HDR monitor. I'll be posting some high-res caps from the Blu-ray tomorrow at least.

The new 2001 Blu-ray is gorgeous.

The 2007 edition was the very first Blu-ray I purchased, so it only makes sense for it to be my first UHD as well. I'm actually hoping to pick up a UHD player this week, though I'm thinking of just waiting until Black Friday to get a better deal.

If you saw the 70mm/IMAX print, the color is about the same as that. Much warmer than the old disc. I played a bit of the old one and I was surprised how blocky and soft it looks. That was state-of-the-art 11 years ago. For those worried about color differences, the old disc actually looks too cold in comparison.

Definitely wait on the player. Black Friday is like 3 weeks. And I have heard from several Best Buy employees that you should wait for Super Bowl season to buy a new tv. That’s when they get the new models and last years stuff goes on sale because of the Super Bowl.

Just received my Indicator William Castle at Columbia Vol. 1 set. This is one of the most beautifully packaged box sets I've ever seen. Thick case with a cardboard band. As a result, the BBFC ratings stickers aren't on the actual slipcase or front covers of the movies. Each film is in a Criterion style case (as usual for Indicator) with a thick glossy booklet. Original poster art everywhere.

Another thing I like about that place are the people who put their entire home theater setup in their signature and you see someone with a $4000 90" 4K set, then you check out their collection and it's nothing but the Transformers and Pitch Perfect movies. There's a guy that has popped up in a lot of the threads I read there recently, and his signature has something like five different TVs, but only one player, so I imagine that he's like David Bowie in The Man Who Fell to Earth, just watching a different movie on a wall of televisions simultaneously. It's a somewhat useful place for information and a lot of insiders and label guys post there frequently, but I'd say maybe 80% of the people who regularly post have weaponized autism and I am frightened of them.

The only two instances you should ever care about slipcovers are the nice Shout/Scream Factory releases that come with new art on the slip and reversible art on the paper cover, and nice Criterion digipaks/slips.

Fun story - one of the movies I used to set up my TV was Arrival.

There's a reason why you shouldn't use a movie with a muted color palette to calibrate a television, but hey, I always felt that Unforgiven needed to look washed out with a hosed up contrast though.
