If you keep listening to him, he tells you about a place you can rob, then eventually gets spooked because he thinks you look familiar and runs away (at which point I shot him in the back of the head).

The gang economics are bullshit. We just robbed a homestead for $1200. The 'gang' gets 600. Two days later, Dutch is haranguing me for not contributing enough. The entire ledger is me giving up pocket watches and jewelry, with Javier contributing a pelt for 25 cents.

Gonna find a Gutenberg press and distribute pamphlets about socialism to the rest of the gang.

Also if you spend a week away from camp, Dutch sends Charles to find you and bring you back. I hope Arthur stabs Dutch in the heart at some point, because he represents capitalism, to me.

Incredible game, but in case this hasn't been discussed already, a heads up to video settings nerds: Rockstar hosed up on HDR.

It's not real hdr, it's a weird SDR upscale that makes everything brighter and washed out. Play the game on 4k SDR, you'll get a much richer image. Sources: several tv experts, a dude I know that works at samsung, my eyes,

Of course he has to whine that you are not bringing in enough, you are the only one that brings in anything and all those vests and cigars aren't going to buy themselves. God forbid anyone actually uses the things they steal, surely sleeping in a stolen covered wagon is better than under a tarp on the ground.

Something similar to this is to remember to press L2 before attempting to greet someone else on horseback while you're riding a horse. If you're too close to them and press square without pressing L2 first, you will jump onto their horse (which they reasonably interpret as you trying to steal it).

edit: To be honest, the controls in this game are kinda lovely and unintuitive, though I'm sure I'll get used to it at some point. I didn't have this sort of issue with Witcher 3, for instance. Just moving around also feels kinda awkward and clunky.

Am I correct in assuming that I shouldn't really hold back on story missions? I get the impression they can be very lucrative and are probably a better idea than killing random animals and poo poo (which does not seem very lucrative).

Speaking of killing animals, is there an element of randomness in their pelt/carcass quality? I've one-shot them with arrows, immediately returned to camp, and still had them be poor quality. One rabbit I one-shot with a varmint rifle was poor quality, while another was perfect, with seemingly no difference.

edit: Also, should I immediately skin animals or wait to skin them after returning to camp? I'd normally assume the latter, but who knows.

HDR usually looks bad if you enable it on a TV that doesn't have "actual" HDR (a lot of TVs advertise HDR but actually don't have the real thing, from what I understand).

It's also worth noticing that in some hdr legit titles you may get a more vibrant image but you still lose a degree of color accuracy and black depth. It's hard to convert anything in hdr correctly, unless the user thinks hdr only means fireball suns and retina piercing reds.

On a side note, this is such an incredibly physical game in everything that you do. It's ridiculous how well it works for immersion, at least for now. Some players pointed out that there are too many unskippable animations but I guess I'll see how I feel about them in 20 hours or so.

The early mission in the snow area, where you have to go into the house and search for something, I rounded the corner of the house, ran into the chair sitting near it and the chair slide into the front of the door. I couldn't pick up or move the chair, so I couldn't trigger opening the door. I tried hitting it, shooting it, running and jumping on it, but nothing was working. I had to use dynamite and blow up the chair, I open the door and a dude jumped me (in a cutscene). Pretty ballsy for him to wait by the door after I blew the poo poo out of it with dynamite.

Also one thing I really hate is looting dead people sometimes triggers an honor hit. I came up to the guy looking at his horse, I greeted him and the horse kicked him dead and ran off. So I figured I'd search the guy, maybe find something useful and the game gives me an honor hit for looting the dead. I can shoot and kill cops and loot them and get no honor hit. I know you're supposed to be a bad guy and not care, but honor is honor drat it, and surviving trumps any honor code.

I don't mind the unskippable animations for the most part. But I do find it nice when things die in weird spots so when I go to loot/skin it skips the animation.

Also, in poker you can skip the other players turns and the deal. But nothing is skippable in blackjack. This is loving dumb.

I will admit that fiddling with the settings on 4k HDR TVs confuses the hell out of me, but mine was really expensive and I bought it based on a Eurogamer recommendation article thingy so I don't think it's my TV. From all the talk and articles around it I think R* just hosed up HDR implementation somehow.

I also am interested and can't figure out animals. I want my sweet trapper clothes, but how do i find "perfect" pelts?. I tried lassoing the deer and knifing them, I tried shooting with arrows, in the head, etc. but nothing seems consistent. I have been skinning everything in the field, so I can take multiple pelts at a time. I feel like I should just be able to one shot them in the head with anything and be fine, but apparently the game doesn't like that.

The animals themselves vary in quality. Study them first to see if you should waste your time, you want the ones with 3 stars.

Always check the quality of the animal before killing it, then make sure you use the appropriate weapon and get a clean kill.

Some of the stranger missions are really clever. I won't get into spoilers but the way they fold out really re-contextualizes the people who them to you and it's refreshing to see Rockstar punching up in these things rather than mocking them.

Lexorin
Jul 5, 2000

Use binoculars to research an animal. Get info on said animal to see what weapon it prefers to be killed by. If that animal is three stars and you kill it with it's preferred weapon then you have a higher chance of getting a perfect whatever. You need a clean shot to the head (only on bigger animals) and the animal must die by that first shot.

Animal has to be 3 stars and they need to die in one shot by the method described in the "show info" panel or in the compendium. If a 3 star animal can be lasso'd you get perfect pelts from the knife kill.

I get a lot of perfect pelts from wolves by just shooting them with regular arrows instead of poison ones so idk what's up with that

You are half right. Animals all have a starting quality, this is one of those things that gets missed on a popup and buried in the manual.

Pull out your gun, binoculars, whatever, and look at the animal. You should have an option to "study" one you have not seen before. This is when Arthur puts it in his journal as a sketch. Now, when you look at it, one of the portions of the little UI that comes up will call the animal Poor, Good, or Pristine. Only Pristine animals can provide perfect pelts.

You can also see this represented visually as 3 stars to the left of the animal's name in the UI when you either target them or their trail. 1 star is poor, 2 good, 3 pristine.

Now that you have found a Pristine Elk for example, you need to kill it without ruining the pelt, that means a one shot kill. To keep it simple, aim for the head. You also need to use appropriate ammo. Use the Varmint rifle or small game arrows for all the small/medium animals like squirrels up to foxes and badgers. Use arrows or rifles for the bigger ones like boar, elk, bear. Poison arrows work too.

It's a bit confusing at first but it actually makes sense, if you wanted to get a good deerskin to make things with, you don't fill it full of holes.

To go get a Perfect Elk hide, here's how you do it. Go to the mountains south of where you found that legendary bear. Walk around slowly on your horse for the better view. Use your witcher senses to either find a 3 star trail, or just see them highlighted and then zoom in on them with binoculars or a sniper rifle. Get close enough that you can use the "call" prompt to whistle and make them raise their head, hit deadeye and nail them in the head.
