Thank you for the crits! Fair and not nearly as cutting as I was expecting (and deserved).

Also, my weekend plans now include a wheel of Gouda and an Evil Dead marathon. (I promise not to write anything during the subsequent cheese coma.)

:siren: THUNDERDOME WEEK CCCXXVI - LET’S MAKE A PLAYLIST! :siren:

The weekend, when most of us celebrate Halloween, has come and gone. A determined few will keep the party going on a school night, god bless them. Me? I’m more a discount candy and low-key spooky movies on a Wednesday night kind of gal.

This is our last week of SPOOKTOBER, but this week stories don’t have to necessarily be genre horror.

I am looking for eerie and beautiful. Or maybe creepy and whimsical. The way the Twin Peaks soundtrack makes you feel. That sensation of frisson you get when you look at a gorgeous painting that’s just a little spooky.

And that’s where you come in.

When you post that you’re in, post a link to a song. The most eerie, melodic creepybeautiful song that you can think of.

Your prompt will be a line from somebody else’s song. If their song has no lyrics, you will be assigned a random line from a song of my choosing.

I will then compile the songs into a playlist we can listen to, enjoying some beautiful music while dismaying at some poo poo writing.

Woop at a haunted house next to a dirty house blowing loud and the opening piano keys of this song make the hair on my neck stand up when I'm really stoned so hear you go! A cat was named after someone's MMO character, and that name was EonFarts. This turned out to be a very accurate name because EonFarts farted for an eon and filled up the entire universe with her fartgas. After a new universe evolved from the gas, EonFarts had kittens with her mate, AeonFarts, then was given away for free on Craigslist--this, of course, after craigslist got invented for a second time in the newly evolved fartgas universe. EonFarts' kittens were composed entirely of gas and no one could ever lock them out of a room, and their meows were a horrible smell. Everyone in the fartgas universe got visited by the smelly kittens at some point. It was a sign of good luck to wake up choking on a putrid stench with tiny mews ringing in the night air. EonFarts ascended to the stars before anyone could adopt her, and this became her forever home. She farts continuously and always, and this is the mysterious force known as 'dark energy' that keeps our smelly universe from collapsing. the end.

Signups are underway but there's still plenty of room for more who wish to partake in the holiday merriment!

Quick reminder, signups are supposed to close tomorrow. BUT as we haven't hit the number of signups I was planning on, we should have enough time to get things going if we start a teensy bit later. I'm pushing back the deadline to signup to 11/5 at 12PM EST.

On November 4th, I'll post the list of signups to make sure I didn't miss anyone, but until then, message me if you want in. DO NOT POST IN THREAD.

Chili posted:

:frogsiren: SECRET SANTA :frogsiren:

We did this last year and it went really well. Changing things up for this year but a lot is staying the same. Read on if you’re interested in sending poo poo around to celebrate the festive season. I’ll say this now and I’ll say it again at the end of the post: DO NOT INDICATE INTEREST OR ATTEMPT TO SIGN UP IN THREAD. Message me directly either through PM or on IRC. Not looking to bog down the thread.

This year, I want to include as many people in on the festivities as possible. Accordingly, there are two ways you can participate in the merriment. If you want to join this year, you MUST participate in Event 1. Event 2 is optional.

Event 1 The Gift of Trash Words

Someone begins a story writing up to no more than 250 words. They then send me their part of the large holiday bash and I forward it on to their recipient. That person then continues on with their own 250 words and so on. I’m starting this early so that if we get a lot of people I’ll hopefully be able to give everyone a couple of days when the story hits them. If you can’t find the time to write 250 words, fine. I’ll call you a scrooge or something and crap out my own 250 to stand in for you (nobody wants this).

There will be a prompt. It does not need to be strictly adhered to. You'll get the prompt when it's your turn to punch the holiday keys. We will end up with one collaborative trash pile of words that hopefully celebrates something. It may be glorious. Probably not. Also, since you'll know who is getting the story after you, feel free to steer the story in a direction they might like, if you know anything about them.

Event 2 The Gift of Trash Presents (but seriously last year’s presents were pretty universally rad as gently caress)

No limit, one way or the other, but keep your expectations low so you may be surprised! Gifts can range from something as small as a really nice greeting card to whatever the hell you can think up. Just make it personal or thoughtful or something. Also, in order to sign up for this event, you need to have completed at least 5 Thunderdome entries.

Last year, I had separate circles for folks in and out of the US to try and keep shipping costs low, but I’m not doing that this year. Suffice to say, if shipping charges are crazy nuts for your Santee you can always consider digital gifts (gifts on steam, forums upgrades, whatever else).

I’ll facilitate all communication between Santas and Santees. If you don't feel as though you know your santee very well, feel free to ask me questions that I'll then relay to them. DO NOT TALK TO YOUR SANTEE. THAT RUINS THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS AND YOU’LL MAKE THUNDEBABYJESUS CRY.

If you’re getting and receiving a gift, the story portion you get will come from your Santa and you’ll be sending along the most recent story update to your Santee. HOW loving MIRTHFUL AND GAY IS THAT?

Given as I want the story to have some time to be written, sign-ups will close on November 1st at 12PM EDT.

To indicate your interest DO NOT POST. Preferably, send me a PM, but if you don’t have PMs find me on irc. I’m often on. I'm sometimes on Discrod too. If you have PM's and you're only signing up for Event 1, then I need nothing else from you. If you don't have PM's I need an e-mail to send the story to. Also, if you're signing up for Event 2, I'll need a mailing address for you so your Santa doesn't get lost on their way to where you live.

Last note. If you (you know who you are) were one of the unfortunate, black-hearted haters who signed up last year and shafted your Santee, either by not delivering a present or a completed story, you’re persona non-grata this year. I won’t have any humbugs clouding things up. You can try again next year after you sit this one out. Same’ll go next year for anyone who is a bummer this year.

I will confirm with you when you sign up. If you don't hear from me, it means I missed it. Try me again. Additionally, in the likely event that something here isn't clear, let me know outside of the thread and I'll be sure to amend what needs amending.

I’ll post a reminder about this when the deadline is a few days away. For now, GET MERRY!

The Rabbit Room

709 rwords

My parents once told me that the wallpaper in my infant bedroom had been decorated with bunnies. And sure enough, as I lay in the enormous crib, in a room clearly modeled after that same nursery, I could see the cartoon rabbits on the wallpaper. I had to hand it to the aliens. Though they didn't get everything right, that little detail was a nice touch. Perhaps they were getting pretty good at abduction.

There was a mobile hanging above the crib. They'd gotten the basic idea down. They knew there were supposed to be planets and stars and rocket ships, clearly, but instead of golden foil star shapes, there were miniaturized, glowing, gaseous orbs. And they didn't know what an Earth rocket was supposed to look like, so they used their crooked spinning opal crafts. They knew cribs had bars, but these looked more like metal than painted wood.

A creature that looked like my mother entered the room. They knew to try to make it look younger than the original. They'd turned her gray hair brown and removed her wrinkles, but they hadn't accounted for how she shrunk or how her back had bent or how the bones in her jaw had dropped. It was like the skeleton of my mother was wearing her younger self as a costume. It spoke a gibberish with the cadence and phonemes of English.

"Come on guys! You can do better than this!" I yelled up at the mobile.

"Shhhh," whispered the Mother in a tone imitating soothing. "Sticko cay. Ohgoo wheat. Mommy sneer."

It started to unbutton its blouse.

"Come on! Let me out! Do your experiments if you like, just get me out of here!"

It revealed its breasts. They were too round, and they floated instead of hanging.

"Stop it! Bring me home!"

And then, as if waking from a dream, I was sitting in the palm of one of the alien's hands in their ship's observatory. They hadn't been this big when they'd first taken me. Had they grown? Had I shrunk?

They put me in a little tube and launched me from the ship. Untold light-years passed by in seconds, and I was back on Earth, in a room filled with people I knew. My siblings, my friends, my co-workers passed by somberly in their best clothes. At the front, sobbing in front of a casket, was my real mother, wrinkled and gray. My abductors had never needed my body to run their tests. They'd left it behind.

I felt my consciousness start to move away from my funeral. Their point was made; there was no need for me to stay further. I was pulled back across the stars, back to the ship, and back into the nursery with the cartoon rabbit wallpaper. The Mother was still there, chest exposed, and it picked me up.

I pushed the nipples away. "No! You're not my mother! Put me down!"

I felt a shock through my artificial infant body. My captors did not approve of my disobedience. Still I resisted.

"This isn't real! End it!" Another shock. "Kill me!"

The Mother made a horrible shrieking sound like the screeches of the alien creatures. With a strange metallic coil, it tied my short-fingered wrists together, then jammed its iron-hard nipple between my lips. I made a muffled scream, but then I tasted the milk, and no sugar on Earth was so sweet. I closed my eyes and sucked. As I drank, I realized how warm the room was and how safe Mommy's arms were. Nothing could hurt me here. I wanted to drink forever.

Then she cut the cord, set me down in the crib, and buttoned her blouse. As she turned to leave, I pulled myself up by the bars of the crib.

"Mommy!" I shouted. "I want to drink more!" But I couldn't form the words, so I made a monotone shriek instead. Mommy turned around and shushed me. Then she walked out the door.

I kept shouting. "Mommy! I want to drink more! Mommy! Mommy! I want Mommy! Mommy!"

When I had calmed down, I looked around at my surroundings. Just what were these strange creatures on the walls, with their big teeth and long ears?

The songs I chose for folks whose songs had no lyrics were “Thompson Girl” by The Tragically Hip, “Drummer” by Late Night Alumni, and “Keep the Streets Empty For Me” by Fever Ray, if you wanted to chuck ‘em on.
