infernal machines posted:doesn't apple already offer some weird lease thing? apple offers lease plus apple care, which is essentially the payment of phone plus $4 for apple care (more if you want lost/stolen coverage). they offer 200GB or storage at $3 a month. $30 a month for services is not even close to what they charge, and a XS is $42 a month on its own, so not sure where that number is from.

other than the fact that they see apple's revenue drying up with fewer phone sales and more dependence on app revenue (which is itself dependent on phone sales) a subscription model is the next logical step when a once successful tech business starts to flounder, ala modern day microsoft

remember when computers got obsolete and useless within 3 years, got zero free operating system updates beyond bugfixes, and the new versions basically said gently caress off unless you upgraded or at least bought more ram? and now everyone whines if their 5 year old iphone gets booted off the free ios updates, people are salty their 2010 macbook airs can't run high sierra, etc.

I’m seriously debating about spending a grand on a Mac mini to replace my 8 year old iMac when I’m old and rich, but when I was a broke college student I would spend 2-3 grand on computer parts every couple of years.

it's like someone in blizzard looked at fortnite and thought that mobile is all the rage, when the core audience for diablo is socially awkward mid-30s american computer touchers who intensely dislike phones sufficiently large to play games on them talking western audiences here of course, i have no doubt it'll be raking cash in asia and other regions where phone is the most common gaming device
