Right now undead are at the top of my shit list. Undead are complete fuckers. Those geists are fuckers. Necromancers are fuckers. Necrosavants are big time fuckers. Skeletons aren't too bad except when they bleed everyone in the company. Zombos are at least not too bad.

To clarify, I didn’t mean that Borderlands is a bad game, I mean that what was originally promised when it was announced was a great deal more interesting than what we ended up with.

I can't even remember the last game that didn't lie or bend the truth slightly to make more sales

Hell even when it was physical boxed games , I remember buying like kings quest 1 on floppy disk , and on the back of the box the art showed a scene that got cut or never made it into the release copy

Borderlands 2 was decent, I had a good time playing it with friends.

Yeah I had fun with BL2. I don’t think I finished it but I did sink a pretty go number of hours into it and had fun while I was playing.

It wasn’t amazing but it was entertaining.

First person Diablo is something that a lot of people want. Destiny is just a bad MMO, Hellgate:London was a mess, and Borderlands is best played drunk or stoned and you have to ignore the bad dialog.

I'd play the poo poo out of a proper Diablo FPS.

The trick is only to play games that have already been out for like, a year or more. Also that way they are way cheaper. Wait long enough and they're a few bucks, or free/pay as you please in some bundle.

I remember when Borderlands was first announced it was a gritty sci fi desert world game that was touted as having non-scripted open world stuff going on, where enemies would move around and interact with each other and the environment without the player's input.

They also bragged about having a huge system of modular guns with a whole bunch of parts that can be swapped out and would have notable effects on how guns worked. Their bazillion gun claim was supposedly based on the sheer number of combinations of gun parts. I remember it being essentially Armored Core level of customization on guns.

It was claimed that you could put together guns that do silly poo poo like a mini gun that fires all the barrels at once, a gun that launches blades that veer off randomly after a set distance, or a gun with enough kickback to launch the player into the air.

They also claimed that the buggies you could drive were heavily customizable.

Then it comes out and it’s some ugly and unfunny cartoon game that is very linear and very scripted. The guns variety was just lovely Diablo style loot system and nearly all of the guns worked the same way but with different numbers. The vehicles were bare bones and boring. None of the guns were interesting. It got boring very fast. I’ve never bought a game from gearbox ever since, and it looks like I was right to do so.

Has Gearbox ever made a good game? Between Borderlands, Duke Nukem Forever, Battleborn and Colonial Marines, I have a hard time thinking of a big studio with a worse record.

:agreed: Games that have been out a year or more are the best. The bugs are patched, and the ones that aren't patched have well documented workarounds on the wiki. Need a hint or a full walkthrough? It's out there. Want to see crudely drawn porn of your favorite characters? There's tons of it.

In the olden times it used to be sort of hit or miss waiting for games to make it to the bargain bin, but these days nearly 100% of games will be easily found a few years later at a fraction of the new game hype price.

That's what I did with borderlands 2. I think I got it and all of its thousand dlcs for $20, so by the time I had it all of my friends had completed it and didn't really want to play it again. So I was stuck solo, and that game is boring as gently caress solo.

At least with coop you have a friend to talk to as the game exposition dumps for an hour every time you come to a new area.

Another game that was hyped to hell and didn't deliver on its initial promises in the slightest.

The only difference being there's an almost painfully interesting character study going on under the end product's barebones plot and garbage politics.

I made the mistake of going to 4chans /vg and noticed there was a thread for Bioshock Infinite a few years after it's release. How could anyone find something in that game worth talking about 2 years later? The whole thread was about Elizabeth, what her feet must smell like, how loyal of a wife she would be, etc.

So you can totally increase the staying power of your game by having a doe-eyed companion in it.

yeah, it doesn't really work for multiplayer only/focused games, though with MMO's picking one up that's been around less than a couple years is a recipe for disappointment when it inevitably gets shut down.

My favourite game of all time is "Escort Mission: The Game"

It's Ico, the PS2 game from 2001. It manages NOT to be an exercise in frustration by having excellent environmental and puzzle design, involving your companion in many puzzles, allowing you to leave your companion alone for an amount of time that gives you a chance to explore but still punishes you for loving around too much, and not having insta-kill on the companion - you can rescue her from the enemies and it's rare to get a game-over that you don't deserve. The entire design philosophy is built around the idea of helping someone who is weaker and less capable than you, but also making you feel protective and not making you hate her in a game-mechanic sense, and 95% of the time it succeeds admirably. It's also freaking gorgeous to look at for a nearly 20 year old game and makes amazing use of very limited hardware.

I thought you were exaggerating about the 20 year thing. Nope. It has been almost that long. I played a demo of it but never got the whole thing. Definitely a classic for that console

I liked the gun in Strangers Wrath, it was actually a crossbow that fired small animals including swarms of bees (machine gun), massive armoured woodlice (shotgun), suicide bomber bats (homing grenades) and spere-oid biting mini monster (proximity mine). Also you found the critters nesting in the landscape rather than ammo crates, and part way through you got the ability to shove dead enemies in your ammo bag where your ammo critters would eat them and breed.

I have no idea, there's an HD remake on the PS3/PC and coming on Switch shortly, there's also a mobile port.

I really like it, it's got a ton of character, it's an FPS/3rd person action hybrid from back when that was *relatively* unusual and flipping between the modes feels pretty natural

Borderlands 2 was not, because enemies scaled exponentially instead of lineraly
