Yeah, exactly. Like someone went "what does this need to appeal to a proper audience", while the roughness kinda defined the whole affair. I mean I don't want to deride them - they make some great tracks. But yeah - I'm not a huge fan. Also that one with the claymation video is just way too on-message with everything.

PS:
I see Irving Force only mentioned twice in this thread, which is odd... I love love love these: They rate very high on my scale for "proof that electric guitars belong in synth tracks".

Guitars absolutely belong in synth. Ultraboss, Powernerd, Meteor, etc is all really good shredwave.

I love LeBrock's outro solo on Call Me.

I dunno if most people feel like I do, but I think synthwave's a pretty wide open genre. Dynatron, Perturbator, and The Midnight are all wildly different thematically, but I'd still put them under the same umbrella. "I know it when I hear it" is a bad way to define synthwave, but meh, it's how I feel.

Honestly this is what I've been doing. Suppose we could just share SoundCloud playlists, that's a thing right?

Basticle

I havent set up any playlists, I just hit "Like" on anything I enjoy and then hit shuffle on that like list (when I'm not listening to new stuff)

Annoyingly theres no obvious way to find a link to share for your likes page, you have to type in your username/likes

https://soundcloud.com/basticular/likes

I love the app on my phone and tablet but on my PC, in the browser the likes page kind of sucks in that you have to hit page down until all the tracks load on the page because the page is too dumb to play tracks that arent loaded yet. It didnt use to have this problem.

Dance is indeed really loving loud.

And 2 libras is not very good

I left after the sixth song or so. Dance is really good but loud live. Their show started way too late though and i had to catch transit home.

2 Libras wasnt a good fit, their sound was off too. Maybe their pre recorded music is good. I'll look into them later. The singing was off key and that didnt really seem deliberate lol.

Daniel Deluxe was good but it was an imac show.

Dance brought the thunder for sure. Them shredding over the tracks makes for better music than the album, id say.

Definitely bring earplugs for Dance if any of you see them in the future. My ears were hosed all night and i didnt stay thru the entire set.

Got in some re-pressings I pre-ordered way back when and both do interesting things with the limitations of vinyl. FM84 is a double disc with like three tracks on either side and a ton of dead disc space, while Nina re-orders the album.

At least they both sound good, but holy gently caress is it annoying to try to keep up with this genre on vinyl. Timecop's Night Drive was announced like two days before it went on pre-order (presumably, I certainly don't know where cause I didn't see it) and was gone within minutes.

So it's Sirius by Alan Parsons Project, except three times longer, with a super wet kick that doesn't stop, and a two and a half minute wailing solo to close it out.

Magic Sword was... not good the second time

part of it is that The Secret Group is an absolutely loving horrendous venue, but like, honestly, that was just not a good show. it was basically the exact same show I saw back in February but with a weird and bad jam session tacked onto the front, a hosed up off-key version of In the Face of Evil (synth guy botched the intro pretty bad and they just tried to roll with it), a weird-sounding version of Reborn, and no Top Gun Anthem. Also, the crowd was like 1/4 made up of neo-Nazis who were all built like goddamn Pillar Men from JoJo.

e: thinking about it, I wonder if the crowd being basically some wild poo poo out of Green Room was why the band sucked: I would be very very very surprised if their hearts were actually in it, seeing the type of motherfuckers they were playing for

e2: ahahaha so my fiancee and I also both noticed that the synth guy was the only one of the three with a 21+ wristband and... that honestly explains some things. dude was probably fairly drunk on top of all of the above, and i would not be surprised if some of the weirdness with how they arranged the songs was to try and cover for him, everything's way more guitar-driven live and while it works great for some tracks, others end up sounding weird as hell.

How did you know they were neo nazis? The only people at the SF show that stood out to me were the neckbeards in trenchcoats and LOTR shirts.

Some had norse rune tattoos/clothing and that sort of thing, others were in the Proud Boy uniform, just generally an uncomfortable vibe

Plenty of neckbeards too, they were probably the majority, but the Nazis were very disconcerting

I'm not, like, surprised though given that Magic Sword got a HUGE fash following after those QAnon weirdos glommed onto them (and they can't really be like "gently caress off Nazis" without breaking kayfabe since they do a Daft Punk kinda thing)

Carpenter Brut handled it fine. Invasion AD started being used to promote right wing bs and he dmca'd everything and took a really hostile stand to fascist poo poo being paired with his music and telling nazi punks to gently caress off might just have to be a thing synthwave artists have to do

I just got back and, uh, I'm gonna preface this with 1) I don't know what a full set is like beyond the shittily-recorded album and 2) I got there like halfway through his set during Chew Bubblegum

But that was loving AMAZING OH MY GOD SEE IT IF YOU CAN HOLY gently caress
