no recruiter and my start date is Monday :confuoot:

I guess I’ll send my hiring manager and hr person(not the person I’ll be dealing with on Monday) an email now. I only found out about this Thursday when I filled out my tax paperwork..

e: well I sent them an email questioning what the hell is going on... if they don’t answer by Monday I guess they get to hear the questions in person before
I’m sending more applications.

Latest failure: I show up for an on site full stack interview. I think the second interviewer I ask him, “how much of this job is front end dev, because that’s something I want to do.” My last job I was told “yeah, maybe we’ll have some front end work.” Technically that did end up happening, but only four years later when the team was in a death spiral and I was thrown into a mess left by a guy who had no clue what he was doing. So I’m asking the question with all that in mind.

Instead of just answering, he’s like “oh, your here to interview for a front end job??” He leaves the room and grabs one of their FE specialists to co-interview. He’s saying “I’ll have to tell our coordinator to change the schedule!” Now I’ve spooked him so I try to talk him down and specifically tell him to please not do that. As soon as he’s finished, he goes and does it anyway, and the coordinator comes in to tell me. Basically the whole process is poisoned because a guy couldn’t just answer the question I put to him.

oh that helps a ton, for real. what I normally see is 10 company holidays + n weeks; if the company holidays are the standard one-offs plus a couple week-long blocks rather than just getting a day or two around the autumn/winter holidays that’s waaaaay better than I was thinking (I was very much like “wtf apple”)

for me it's great because at my old job I only got 5 sick days so I was constantly having to use vacation instead. now I have more vacation than I know what to do with because I have enough sick days.

at my current job i have never tracked a sick day or vacation day and i'll have taken 4 weeks of actual time that i'm on vacation and a whole bunch of random days by the end of the year probably around 6 weeks worth of vacation and sick time total

unlimited vacation can be a dangerous game but it can definitely work in your favor

we get 30 days (6 weeks) of paid vacation a year at my new job and i was feeling kinda eh about that because it was the same as i had at the previous place. we can take three more weeks unpaid tho if we want. probably gonna use all of that too. it was also p funny to sit in orientation and see one of the hr ladies very explicitly spell out for the expats that you have to take at least 20 days a year by law and please don't make trouble for us by not doing it. owns.

at least an application a day (usually more but trending down, frankly) and still no onsites (only 2 phone screenings) as of a month in to anxious "unemployment"

last application this morning i took 20 minutes to fill in and submit and got a rejection 15 minutes later. i know i'm far too easily depressed but taking less time to be thrown away than it took to ask for consideration kinda hurt

Do you ask for any feedback from these rejections? Maybe most people will ignore you, but if you're getting rejected that quickly I'd be concerned that there's some big issue somewhere that you're not aware of and it can't hurt to ask.

like it is a numbers game to an extent, and the process is slow at some places, but if you are a month in after sending 30-50 applications and only received 2 phone interviews, the problem is your resume

i disagree, my job search started out the same way —a month of silence. i don’t have a concrete answer why, but i suspect that various people’s summer holiday schedules had something to do with it.

I feel like "expanded horizons" isn't quite correct grammar but I'm not sure what exactly is wrong.

If you could add a bulletpoint to the current rewriting project describing something you personally have accomplished or similar I think that would help - even just changing "implementing" to "implemented" - I think it would help. Moving from TFS to git is very worthwhile but having a concrete business objective you've met would make it much stronger imo

Finally if you could break your experience into different projects you've worked on with their own subheadings it would give your career a bit more structure.

E: I don't mean to come across as negative at all though, it is a good cv!

yeah your biggest hurdle is gonna be geography. employers are naturally gonna put you lower on the list if you're out of town and the vegas market itself isn't exactly a hot one. definitely not impossible but you're gonna have to fish for a bit

we've already established interviewing is a separate skill from programming, and doing poorly/well on one doesn't mean you'll do poorly/well on the other

i remember you posting your resume the first time. it got a lot better, but there are still things i'd change

for example:

- working with security clearance / without internet access: is this relevant to the jobs you're applying to? it's useful to tailor your resume to the specific job/position you're applying to. if you're e.g. applying to web companies, i doubt they'd care about this

(also it might help if you mentioned what kind of positions you're applying to)

- phrases like "enabled rapid prototyping" and "improved offsite debugging" are sorta vague. "added dynamic per-article control" is fine but bland. you should include the most interesting technical challenges you've faced, even if they comprised .01% of the total work you did.

- there are grammar mistakes and weird phrasing. "directly and daily work" -- work is a verb and a noun here. "migrating... to, and maintaining, Git host" -- just sounds a bit off. also i'm not at all a designer, but some of the design choices seem weird (bolding/coloring the first letter of each header, using 3 or 4 different ways to bring attention to a phrase)

going through it i feel like i'm just nitpicking and pointing out what _i_ would have written, so take my advice with a grain of salt

but like if i were trying to play up my experience and play down the fact that i've only been with one company, i'd split out the experience section for each title i had. like my current resume has a separate company/title/dates held section for both my time as a senior and mid-level at the same company

Ciaphas
Nov 20, 2005

> BEWARE, COWARD :ovr:

i don't remember my title changes anymore, they were disconnected from pay bumps and responsibility changes or even (i suspect) merit, just a "yeah here's your raise" mechanistically given out

it was comp engineer 1 then 2 then 3 then comp scientist (un-numbered) probably because it makes their salary profile look better or something, i don't know

point being title is meaningless to me and i have nothing to attach to it on a resume

(e) anyway thanks for the feedback, i'll try to improve it tomorrow i guess

other companies don't need to know that. in fact they don't even need to know the titles themselves, they just want to see that you were growing and not just doing the same thing over and over

to that end if you can say something like you mentored juniors or did more architectural work or whatever makes you sound more senior, that could also help
