A lot of city kids are going to the suburbs to scam people with these coupon cards that supposedly give big discounts on local businesses, like unlimited two for ones. Asking $20 for these plastic cards, claiming its a school fundraiser. I overheard one reasonable person asking to see the kids student ID, and of course he gave a BS excuse.

Those cards are probably legit. They sell the same type of thing in my area and the only real problem is that you are probably not going to use it enough to make it worth it.

Ther old ladies on Nextdoor think every person selling something is trying to scam them.

This was the case with those coupon books they were selling when my kids were in school.

They had legit ones in my city, they were really quite good deals.

So good that no businesses signed up to do it the next year.

My football team sold those one year for fundraising, we managed to sell enough to bankrupt not one but two Dairy Queen franchises.

Next year we sold water softener salt, which somehow made us more money then the cards.

I bought a coupon book a few years ago from a pre-med student going door-to-door doing fundraising. I thumbed through it and saw enough places we'd normally visit that it was worth the $20 or so we spent.

That doesn't make any sense. The word "become" implies a change in state

And the dictionaries agree:

Definition of become

intransitive verb

1a : to come into existence

b : to come to be become sick They both became teachers.

2 : to undergo change or development The pain was becoming more intense.

The real trick for the coupon books is for vacations - if you're gonna be spending a couple weeks somewhere, buy the book, and now you have a handy list of local nonchain places, with abridged menus and coupons.

I mean yeah you could try to fight through yelp for recommendations i guess, but the coupon book works better IME, and actually saves money.

First time since I worked in a gas station 40 years ago, it happened to me last night.

Pull into the Shell station on the way home from work for a couple of tall boys. On my way out the door, there's a 1980s vintage pedo van pulled up to the pump with a sketchy looking dude reaching into the side door. As I walk by:

"Yo man, I got some T-bones?"

"Excuse me?"

"Want some T-bones?"

"No thanks, I'm good."

Guess the van-meat thing is still going strong.

Was driving a couple days ago and some guys in a van signal for me to roll down my window. I do, and they immediately ask if I want to buy a TV for a discount. When I say no, they offer to sell me some porn DVD's. I say have a no thanks, have a nice day, roll my window up and drive off.

It was surreal. Who gets harassed into buying a tv? Who buys porn DVD's from strangers off the street? It was ridiculous.

Z so good

As the article mentions, this has been around for forever and predates trump by quite a bit, at the very least since the Iraq war days where people thought that once we’d win the war then the money would go up in value and idiots would pit their savings into useless Iraqi currency. I’m not sure whey they even bother with the trump angle since it’s just clearly some idiot with issues buying currency for no reason.

Saw a post on r/bestoflegaladvice today and thought of this thread. Here's the original post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/a027o7/i_cashed_a_fraudulent_check_and_now_the_bank_is/

quote:

I was selling an item($800) on Craigslist and a buyer wanted to pay via check. He sent me a check in the mail but it was for much more than what the item was worth($3,000). He said it was a mistake that his assistant made and to wire me back $2000 and keep an extra $200 for my trouble and he would send a shipping company to come pick up my item.

I cashed the check via mobile deposit so a teller didn't get to actually hold the check or anything but it cleared my bank in one business day and I wired him $2,000. He said he would be sending a shipping company out within the next couple days. I hadn't heard from him in a week so I thought the shipping company messed up, whatever. Then I get a call from my bank saying the check deposited bounced and they took the whole $3,000 back!

They informed me I got scammed via a check scam and there was nothing they could do. They said I'm responsible for paying them back when all I did was cash a check! How is it my fault that the bank cleared the entire amount of a $3,000 check without even verifying the funds?! This is insane!

Is there any recourse here?

I think you should be required to get some kind of license before you deposit a check, people clearly do not understand who is obliged to do what in that scenario.

That's fair, further reading of the responses to that thread made me realize that Federal law is why they are obligated to presume that the check will clear before they actually confirm that it's there. Instead of pushing them to use a system that would actually clear/deny it within that timeframe, because that's evil Big Government or whatever.

I suck up the fact that I'm paying, like, $5 a month extra for utilities to not have to deal with mailing a check. Until a few months ago, I was having to write checks to pay rent, too. Thankfully, they started taking ACH without a fee recently; @ToxicSlurpee, are you sure that fee applies if you're using direct debit from your bank account, and not just if you pay with a credit card?
