The Dany Drogo thing is like the polar opposite of the scene in Mona Lisa Overdrive where Mona's boyfriend wants her to tell him about her day as a prostitute and she knows he doesn't really want the truth but rather a lurid exaggeration, and there's a line like "sometimes sex hurts a little but still feels good, but he wanted her to tell him that it hurt a lot but she still liked it, which she didn't understand". It's the gold standard of a genre sex scene precisely because it's skeezy and uncomfortable and gross on purpose rather than reveling in the skeeziness.

HBO has a greater ratio of wank-off material compared to grrm and that's the main reason the show comes off as significantly more sleazy (and also, it being a visual medium and showing a porn star wiping cum off her face, and all) - while the fingerbanging is hands down the creepiest scene in all books and show simply because it is unapologetic smut involving a 13 year old girl and kudos to HBO for treating that scene much better, even while showing Emilia's tits.

quote:Growing up I was bullied. I experienced violence in my community, I watched close friends die, and I saw many of the toughest people I know get swallowed up by the opioid epidemic. I fell into addiction too and in 2012 I entered my first stint in detox while in the middle of my first read through of A Song of Ice and Fire. I had just finished book one and while in treatment I read A Storm of Swords and A Clash of Kings. At the time I believed Winds would come out in 2018 though I had every intention of dying way before that. I had no faith in myself, I saw myself as a useless addict, and I never thought I would get clean. Something changed during my last stay in detox. I didn’t go to the groups and I didn’t interact with the other clients. Instead I followed Arya through the Riverlands and Tyrion through his time as Hand. My rehab was in Westeros. Even though the books didn’t relate to my actual experience at the time, reading through the characters fighting for their lives, betting against all odds, and surviving on sheer will gave me a new sense of hope. By the time I got out I made a deal with myself that I would give an honest attempt to stay sober and I promised myself that I would not die until after Winds of Winter came out.

Perhaps the real Song of Ice and Fire was the dramatic life changes we had along the way. Remember back in like 2008 when we talked about everything we'd done between Tyrion chapters? That was 10 years ago.

Anyone reading Fire and Blood? There’s lots of incest and child marriage amd whores, as you’d expect, and the section I just read had Ser Grover Tully being succeeded by Ser Elmo. Jesus Christ, George.

There's a bit where a girl decides not to depart to Driftmark. Which is just as well because from the previous page she already was on Driftmark.
